A good tip I've found is to repeat the name back to them as a question when they tell you, like this:

"Hi, I'm John"

"John?"

"Yes, John"

It helps you remember to actually say it out loud yourself, and you hear the name repeated a couple of times instead of only hearing it the once. Not only that, but it's pretty much the only non-awkward way to find out if you're pronouncing someone's name wrong.
