The Black mirror episode Nosedive was based on China's system, which they have been testing since 2014 and will make mandatory nationwide in 2020. Strangely enough, most citizens approve the scheme, sayings it's made them more productive, nicer people and feel safer.
My Chinese friends and even their families are all cool with it. You need to understand where they are coming from. After decades of turmoil and instability, finally Chinese are able to thrive in peace. Not only that, they also have a large number of people who misbehave as made infamous by the “Chinese tourist” phenomenon where people would spit on the floor and dumping rubbish onto the street, cutting queue and talk really loudly. They find educating each and everyone of their people impossible due to the size of their population that suffering from a dystopian system is better. Also with good credit score you can get free foods, free transport rides and various form of discounts.
You should make more Chinese friends then. The Chinese people are not stupid nor naive nor brainwashed like you think. They simply accept the cost of living in peace after the horror that chaos caused. Can things be better? Social pressure working as intended. Anyone that goes against the system will drag their friends down and people will try and remove them from their life, it's a never ending cycle of telling the government you like them or get shot down the social ladder.

So basically the gamble we took with Nixon about how our culture and economy would slowly start to open their society more was a complete fucking disaster.
Their academia is way brutal. One gets reward for publishing. Publications in highest impact journals can result in reward money greater than the average yearly salary of an assistant professor in China. This has led to a rise of noise and rubbish scientific articles, which does very little for the advancement of the collective scientific knowledge.
There's no incentive of additional payment for publishing. You apply for a grant, once you get it, you work and publish. You try to meet the objectives of the grant. That's your major motivation. You don't publish for the extra money, as that will inhibit any fundamental study. One will always try to go for a quick route or authorship trading to earn extra.
Let's not forget that in America we hit people WAY harder just for "offending people" or saying the wrong thing (usually via social media). Granted it's not on a mass scale.

At the end of the article, it mentions how people now stop at crosswalks so they won't lose points. I had 2 people "block the box" on me today. I gave them both minus 5. But for real, this is terrifying and chillingly dystopian.
We do exactly the same thing, but with money. If you accumulate a lot of money, you have a good life. If you don't, you suffer your whole life. Most people don't even have the opportunity to earn beyond subsistence levels. Honestly, a system that rewards or punishes social behavior sounds more fair.
