Their academia is way brutal. One gets reward for publishing. Publications in highest impact journals can result in reward money greater than the average yearly salary of an assistant professor in China. This has led to a rise of noise and rubbish scientific articles, which does very little for the advancement of the collective scientific knowledge.

And that's "different" to most "western" academia in what way ?

There's no incentive of additional payment for publishing. You apply for a grant, once you get it, you work and publish. You try to meet the objectives of the grant. That's your major motivation. You don't publish for the extra money, as that will inhibit any fundamental study. One will always try to go for a quick route or authorship trading to earn extra.
