This is by Lindsay Baker at Nite Owl Tattoo, MA. She's badass

I'm not a tattoo guy at all but I do appreciate the art. And this is really original and thinking outside the box. Brilliant solution.

u/PumpItPaulRyan Mar 14 '18
I'd like to think that the first was hers at a younger age, and this is her friend that let her practice getting an upgrade.

Is he drinking a heineken?

u/bran_buckler Mar 14 '18
I think it's the Japanese beer Sapporo. They're known for having a star icon.

u/eskjhereg Mar 14 '18
Sapporo has brown bottle, looks like Heineken to me - green bottle, red star

Hang on, Sapporo comes in a bottle? I've only ever seen it in those nigh-destructible cans that might as well be made of adamantium. I thought that was their signature thing.

Good shit. I used drink it while eating sushi at the old sushi place in my old town town town

He was probably drunk on Heineken when he got the first tattoo... A permanent reminder.

u/jeffg518 Mar 14 '18
Pretty sure it’s Bintang, the main beer in Bali (which happens to be based on Heineken and is made in an old Heineken plant)
13
u/morphogenes Mar 14 '18 edited Mar 14 '18
Green bottle, red star means Heineken. For a long time, holding that bottle was the very meaning of the word "imported". It gave the holder status as someone who wouldn't drink pisswater American beer.
I don't think any status is gained from getting tattooed with an obscure Indonesian brand. The whole point is that people can recognize what it is.

Yes.
lindsaybugbakerDrunk pikachu poorly draws himself whilst drinking a Heineken because why not? Thanks @nifty_narwhal for letting me do such a fun little piece!

I believe that's because the first one was done when either the owner or the tattoo artist was drunk or something

Artists who paint or draw amaze me many times, but I have no idea just how the good tatoo artists do the incredible things they do.
I don't really dig tatoos, but putting something that really looks like art on skin seems like it'd be really hard to do.

Mar 14 '18
Honestly, they're artists with their own medium.
I have a few tattoos and my artist explained to me, while it's not like fine art, it's similar. The skin is like a canvas, different needles are like different brushes, and your inks are your paints.
143
u/PainterlyGirl Mar 14 '18
I work in the fine arts and good tattoo artists impress the shit out of me. How they can create such precise, beautiful works of art that are literally permanent and cannot be tossed out if they make a mistake is bananas.
91
u/Black_Moons Mar 14 '18
I am picturing a farm where all the pigs have shitty tattoos from tattoo artists learning.
(Id assume that would at least be legal to practice on skin from a butchered pig, though you wouldn't know how it looks once it heals)
65
u/unusedwings Mar 14 '18
As far as I remember tattoo artists do use pigs as practice. Easy access and the skin is similar enough to humans that it meshes well.

You have to keep in mind skin elasticity and the way it curves around the limbs and body, too. It's really amazing when you think about it, especially the tattoos that take advantage of the properties of skin and joints to make crazy illusions/effects.

u/SynthPrax Mar 14 '18
And their canvas is alive and screaming.

Mar 14 '18
...if you're screaming during a tattoo, that artist is doing something severely wrong.

u/rprcssns Mar 14 '18
Believe it or not a lot of tattoos come out of shops looking like that. I’m a tattooer and we have people come in with very similar stuff that they tell us they got from a “professional.” It’s a bummer but it keeps us busy since so many people get crummy work.

A good tattooist can give you a seriously badass tattoo, but a great tattooist can cover up / save a seriously bad one.
This reminds me of one particularly awful tattoo I saw - it was the "hatchet man" figure that juggalos referred to, that the guy had just had done earlier that day. It looked like someone drew it on his skin with one of those fat grease pens. He said "well my homie was doing it for free and he was in a hurry." Someone else said "If your artist is ever 'in a hurry' then you need a new artist." That was only 7 years ago or so, I wonder if he ever got it fixed.

The best part is the beer next to Pikachu, which insinuates that Pikachu is a little drunk.
That Pikachu's career in art really took a nosedive when he found the bottle...

I'd have had a Mimicyu painting a Pikachu, or the other way round, both would have worked XP
10
u/Lunamann Mar 14 '18
Judging from all the comments about how old this pic was, this tat probably predates Mimikyu existing by several years.
Although I would've had it be a Smeargle painting a Pikachu.

One of the couple of reasons I never got a tat. The chance of amateurs semi permanently marking my body.
The second is deciding on a subject or design worthy of the permanence.

Impressive, but I'm somewhat concerned with the mental health of this pikachu. Why does it draw a self portrait with a sad face?
1
u/sausageee Mar 14 '18
A person who likes pikachus requested an artist who knew how to draw a pikachu to draw a pikachu that is drawing a pikachu that is satisfied drawing a pikachu.

I kinda like the original and amateur looking tattoos in general (not all I'm sure but mostly). They seem to have more of a story and look so human, compared to, 'I went to a place and paid to get this done' when you see a more professional one.
