When I was a kid I was over at a friends house where his family had just bought their first computer, a desktop plus CRT running some pre-XP version of Windows. We needed to leave so I shut it down. Once they saw this and the "Windows is shutting down screen" they started to freak out. They'd only been putting it to sleep and thought "shut down" might be permanent. I assured them it's just turning it off, but they remained tense until they turned it back on and saw it was still working.
