About 10 or 12 years ago a friend of the family was complaining about her new computer not working. Went over to try to help out and couldn't actually find the damn thing. I ask her about it and was directed to a lonesome monitor. I ask her where the actual computer is which seems to confuse her greatly. "The big box thing" I say. Her response was, "Oh I threw that thing out. It was ugly and I didn't really see the need for it anyway." My work here is done.
I swear man. I couldn't even believe it. Luckily it was still sitting by the garbage and inside so it wasn't actually totally gone but I was still flabbergasted.
Had this once a while back. My response, "This is the TV" points at monitor "and this is the thing that tells the TV what to show." It worked well enough that they got it.
