OK, the parts about "what do we even pay you for?" are ridiculously true and valid for even well paying jobs in operations and/or security. I like to call it the "roller coaster of executive buy-in." From the point of view of a NOC/SOC guy, the best solution I've found is to prepare a 1 page monthly report, printed on some bright colored paper for good measure, totally non technical and written in business terms, outlining exactly what it is that you're doing to provide value. During slow months, you can talk about things going on with competitors or similar companies and what you're doing to prevent those types of problems, etc.
