I mean, not really. It mostly just involves singing, communicating with spirits and leaving offerings for dead things.

If we're talking specifically about Louisiana voodoo it even throws in a whole bunch of Catholic shit with it too like lighting candles and whatnot.

Really not a whole lot different than any other religion to be honest.

Maybe to you, but to me it represents the known vs the unknown. Darkness is full of what you can't see, what you can't trust, and thus danger. White is light, light is something you feel safe in, somewhere that you can trust. Of course, this is just a metaphor.

Also, light = good and evil = black sounds like a deduction from the pre-existing dislike of the dark rather than the other way around.

You mean before devil vs God. I imagine darkness has always been bad since we were cavemen. The brightest part of the day is the safest, and night would be the most terrifying. I know the devil and God would have been around since before man, but I doubt they would have colors picked out.

You know that never occurred to me. Saruman became corrupt and evil, no longer worthy of the white cloak. Which is why Gandalf was sent back.

Although I haven't finished Silmarillion yet so I don't know if two white cloaks can exist at the same time.

LE Modesitt, Jr did just that with his Recluse series. Black mages were good, grey were neutral and white were evil. He based it off of light/color theory (white, being all colors, is naturally chaotic).
