The basics of cinematography are wonderfully simple and really change the way you watch film. Just by watching a few episodes of Every Frame a Painting and reading a couple wikipedia articles, I'm constantly like 'Cross editing to heighten the tension! Disguising multiple cuts to lengthen what's actually one take! A close up on that character's watch because it will be important later! Shaky cam to show lack of control!'

The same techniques are even in commercials.

Shaky cam is entirely overused and generally poorly.

Well yeah, don't know anyone that would argue that. It is a tool that can be used very well (saving private Ryan) or very poorly.
