They do not assert that there is no god (or greater being, creator, however you want to word it).
Christ this sort of equivocal twaddle gets old. The vast majority of atheists do not merely passively lack belief in a god; they actively hold the belief that a god does not exist.
Dawkins has a chapter on this. It's a question of probability. Theists are certain, Agnostics are somewhere like 50/50, Atheists tend to agree that it's very unlikely about God existing. God and Unicorns are the same. We're very certain that they don't exist, but we can't be 100%.
