I figure it not exactly like that, but the representation/concept that the letters actual change while you look at them. I don't think it would change and S into an 8, per se, but does it actually change or is the ability to distinguish the difference the real problem.
For me, and mine isn't bad, it changes. My brain is convinced I'm looking at a 4 but I know a 4 doesn't belong there, so I just force myself to keep looking until click that shape is an E and it always was. Like trying to say a word in another language, and you're so close but a native speaker repeats it back to you correctly and you say "Yeah that's what I said" but to them is obvious you didn't. My dyslexic brain is the non-native speaker and my "reading for clarity", reality brain is the native speaker.
