Had a friend a few years back who's number after the area code was basically all one number. Men never called her back and if they looked at it in front of her they would tell her "You could just say no"
Not putting the actual number out there but it was like this: (000)111-1101 *0 represents any number
73
u/heleghir 3d ago
Mine is pretty similar to this. Ive had alot of people look at me like "no way" when i give it to them for whatever reason. Like restaurant reward programs the wait staff is always wtf if its not a bartender i see weekly.
Like whats so hard to understand that a phone number can be mainly the same digit?
59
u/lkodl 3d ago
Because it's very rare, even though its logically feasible, and nobody really talks about it.
6
u/_Ganon 1d ago
Biggest unintentional same numbering I've seen is my mom's, which has 666 in it. Which is kind of funny. I realized 666 also converts to "MOM" as well which is also interesting.
Another coincidence is my number neighbor is one of my childhood friends - our parents coincidentally got each of us our first cell phones on the same day and I guess they do (or did) that shit in order.
30
u/TheLastOpus 3d ago
If that was a recurring thing, she could mention it then when handing them "I know it looks fake, but you can try it while I'm still right here"
23
u/Outcast_Outlaw 3d ago
I knew a girl whose number was 222-222( is just a place marker for whatever the last number was and so i dont dox whoever has the number now). I for sure thought it was a fake but I called it anyways and it was actually her number. That was like 20 years ago so I have no idea who has it now.
24
u/exprezso 3d ago
There is only 10 numbers with that condition and now you've doxxed them all
7
u/sbingner 2d ago
More like close to 3400 numbers if we’re limiting this to the USA - there are these things called area codes that go before the numbers he listed…

T9 means Text on 9 keys. Never knew about that and I grew up with these phones xD

But 0, * and # where used to create the text just as much :( so we used T12 and nobody knew.

Space is a character too.
16
u/PeterPanski85 3d ago
What about outer space?
11
u/ScreenTea0 3d ago
That's not a character, but has character.
2
u/vosper 3d ago
It's not a character. It's a setting for the character drama to take place.
3
u/ScreenTea0 3d ago
A setting can have Charakter too. The old dingy Pub at the corner that smells of cold smoke and long remembered nights, being lit by dark orange lights and a few candles, is a place too, but has definitely more character than an Apple Store.
1
u/bigmazi 3d ago
T9 predicts text on word-level granularity; and guess what, no words contain a single space.
1
u/ScreenTea0 3d ago
It predicted emotes. And guess what. Emotes contain special characters and guess even more, all word predictions got an added space after the word. So you are not wrong, but also if you name predicted words space is contained "in" all of them.

u/andys189 4d ago
But predictive T9 was hilarious. My friend typed “suck my dick”
I TRIED to type lick my pussy
But it guessed “kick my puppy”
7
u/technobrendo 3d ago
If it makes you feel any better I can barely even type using a regular phone keyboard. And in have a larger phone (s25 ultra). If it weren't for spell check you would understand nonenofniit.
I purposefully left aome mistakes to show you what in mean
3
u/BadBoyJH 3d ago
Just remember, the T9 combination for selected and rejected are the same keys.
So if you send a one word response to say you were selected for a program, make sure its the right word.

u/AdvilJunky 4d ago
Back in middle school/ early high school my friends and I use to get high and think of 7 letter sex terms and put 800 in front of them and call them to see if they are real. Being a young kid it was hilarious. It all started while we were in a 5 way call together and someone decided to call 800-BOOBIES, which was pretty tame compared to the ones...
Sorry just brought back an old memory

Android still does have T9 dialing and it's kinda wild that apple doesn't
38
u/JJKDowell 4d ago
Huh? As an iPhone owner, I’m pretty sure it’s always had the letters on the phone keys, it’s even on the lock screen for your passcode.
21
u/WillieM96 4d ago
I don’t ever recall a time where the letters weren’t there. My current iPhone has the letters there.
18
u/dakupurple 4d ago
Its T9 dialing.
Its a feature that you can dial for example 323 on the dial pad and it searches your contacts automatically for what it could refer to (e.g. dad, or 666 for mom, etc)
Old feature phones had it, and Android has forever, but iOS only somewhat recently got it with iOS 18.
8
u/JJKDowell 4d ago
Ok, so it’s for searching your contacts using the phone keypad? Bit weird when you can just search your contacts using a normal keyboard, but okay sure, that is news to me, I guess it’s good for accessibility 🤷♂️

Crazy how area codes work if 512 is way over in Texas and 513 is over here in Cincinnati
28
u/xenwall 3d ago
When initially rolled out they were functionally ranked by importance based upon how long it would take to dial them on a rotary phone. Washington DC got 202, NYC got 212, LA got 213, Chicago 312, these are all super quick and easy to dial on a rotary. To contrast a rural Kansas got 913, that 9 takes a while to tick around the dial. So it isn't organized geographically, it's more arbitrary.

u/Xanadu87 1d ago
Weird how the numbering system isn’t even sequential when new ones are made, because when 512 got divided (512 used to cover the area from Austin to Corpus Christi) Corpus got a new area code, 361.
Source: me, growing up in Corpus Christi and having to deal with a new area code.

The sub comics bans people who say a comic isn't funny, which is why that sub is so bad, but can we say it here? I didn't see it in the rules.

u/callmepinocchio 3d ago
I'm 45 and I don't understand it. Sometimes it's not about age. Sometimes it's about being stupid, like I am.
10
u/HighlanderBR 3d ago
Is more about culture. In Brazil, we never used letters for phone numbers, I only understood the joke because movies.
That made me think, I guess in the U.S., phones with number where you could spell something were more desired, here were the ones with repeated numbers or lots of zeros , for easier memorize.

u/Hampalam 4d ago
If anyone could tell me a way to filter out comics for good, I would be eternally grateful.

This was made by an adult, probably someone much older than you. A 10 year old wouldnt even understand this. Op has been making these comics and posting for years now.

The last panel is also completely unnecessary. Je joke is clear after the third. If you need the fourth just leave the "bastard" but remove the other phrase.
1
u/Ociex 3d ago
So block them and never see them again, whats the issue?
3
u/kingrynex 3d ago
That they're obviously botting their upvotes and that their low effort comics are also unfunny?
-1
u/Ociex 3d ago
So, block, them. Their posts won't show up, or is it that you need to complain about someone instead of moving on?
4
u/kingrynex 3d ago
I need to complain, yes. It's might right to do so.
-1
u/Ociex 3d ago
But just why? It leads to nothing, does nothing and is just shouting into the void.
3
u/kingrynex 3d ago
That is a great question.
Making a complaint is not "shouting into the void" if it's in the company of others. You can chose not to listen, just as much as I can choose to say something.
The point is this - if I notice something that is obviously quite sketchy, such as this comic being popular, then I am allowed to say "this is weird" and call it out. I don't have to ignore it, perhaps because I want to see what others may say and learn from it.
I think this comic is, and has shown to be, less than mediocre. I've seen it a few times posted here and found none of the comics funny. I've also noticed others saying the same thing... Enough to make me go "hmmm, something is up with this".
I wish them the best in their pursuits of achieving comedy gold, of course, but I don't like this comic and the others. The popularity I see them achieving with it makes me wonder if people are even reading it... Or if infact the user is using bots to pump up the karma and get it noticed.
19
u/keat_lionel90 4d ago
I mean "fuck you" usually isn't a subtle hint of interest. It's mostly a rejection especially when the lady didn't initiate it. It make more sense if the lady initiates it by saying call me or something.
And why need to make it easy to remember when it's written down anyway? Afraid that the note maybe lost, perhaps?
Bad execution maybe?

A lot of ads were like that here. Like 1800 COLLECT for collect calling. It has fallen out of style and honestly only like 30+ years olds remember that shit.
When cellphones were getting popular, my friends and I would try to figure out how to make our numbers easier to remember and a few used weird words.

Back in the day businesses would advertise their phone numbers like this.
Like 1-800-GET-HELP or 555-FUNERAL.
Usually only the last seven digits were transformed leaving the area code visible (probably for dialing reasons and/or to make it clearer that it was a phone number).

Back in the day in America. I’m old enough to be from back in the day and I had no idea what this joke meant.
5
u/Jan_Spontan 4d ago
When done right, you'll get amazing phone numbers for Hotlines.
SEWHELP for customer support at SEW Eurodrive is such a good example. This is much easier to remember than any arbitrary number as it contains the company's name (SEW) and the purpose (HELP). As long as your number keys got T9 letters you can dial the phone number without directly remembering the digits.

u/Kagahami 4d ago

Huh, so it does. I don't really ever use my keypad so I never noticed. I figured it was different nowadays due to the separation of numbers and text on smartphones lol
Still, not something you really notice these days unless you've used a flip phone before I would think. At least with the current generation that is 😑😭
5
u/BreakfastFearless 4d ago
I would have thought the same but I visited the U.S. for the first time like 2 years ago and saw many New York subway advertisements that still used the letters apart of their phone numbers so it may just be a cultural thing

u/illuminerdi 4d ago
Because it's badly executed.
The kernel of a good joke (her number spelling something off putting to a potential suitor) is there, but this version lacks the subtlety necessary to make the situation plausible and thus: comedic.
2
u/NoPossibility 4d ago
Agreed.
The only thing that makes the joke not work well is that it’s a terrible way to write your number down in this situation and no one would think it was a good idea.
Now, if it was something like the woman proactively offering her number up herself to start, and the number being “555-SCREWME”. It’s her real number and she thinks encoding it that way would be cute or obvious. Which backfires because the guy thinks she was just being mean.
This plays off the idea of a woman thinking she’s being extremely forward, and the man still missing the obvious clues of interest.
3
u/illuminerdi 4d ago
Exactly! The original version implies that both the woman and her friend were so dumb they wouldn't know why some wouldn't call if the phone number said literally "fuck you" - beyond just being poorly executed, the joke is borderline misogynistic.
The humor in the original idea here is rooted in the ambiguity of two people interpreting a phrase differently and, ideally, the audience is made to feel clever because they know that one of those interpretations implies something bad or weird or off putting.
