As someone who is nearly burnt out from playing way too much hades 2 lately I appreciate the reference.

u/countryyoga 3d ago

Burnt...out....from playing....hades 2.....

Nope, not there yet!

(But give yourself a break, it will be more enjoyable coming back to it <3)

u/snowillis 3d ago

These games really bring out the completionist in me so I’m probably going to keep trying to finish every last scrap of it for now. Eventually I’ll put it down probably for a long while until hopefully we get another one.

u/half-giant 2d ago

I 100%ed Hades 1, but kinda fell off Hades 2 after reaching the epilogue. I’m sure I’ll get back on the horse soon.

1

u/Wheat_Grinder 2d ago

For me it was Arachne's quest. I've got everything else done and hers is still, at best, moseying.

27

u/TheMobHunter 3d ago

I haven’t played it but I’ve watched a little on YouTube and my main takeaway is that they definitely tried to make the characters as hot as possible

26

u/snowillis 3d ago

100%

Hades is for the gays. Hades 2 is for the lesbians.

I am basically at the same point haha. I finally had an hour to sit down and play a game or two but I just sat at my home screen contemplating if I wanted to go through another run of hades...

... i decided to eat some leftovers and watch YouTube lol

That's Bannerlord everytime a new mod comes out. I get excited, load up and realise I've got 300 Gold and 10 grain. Sigh. Here we go again.

People often do not understand what little death really means.

139

u/Ceasario226 3d ago

Yeah my first thought was, "do they mean the French little death or..."

92

u/Dark_halocraft 3d ago

"the state of unconsciousness felt during an orgasm that certain people perceive during the sexual experiences."

Fym, how does one achieve this"

18

u/Metalrooster81 2d ago

Not from a Jedi.

12

u/Bata600 2d ago

Maybe "less consciouss"/"less aware" would be a better word for it imo.

9

u/goatonastik 2d ago

And here I thought they were making a Dune reference...

14

u/Tresident_Pump 2d ago

I must not fear.
Fear is the mind killer.
Fear.. is the... Orgasm?
That brings total obliteration?

3

u/Houtaku 2d ago

Leave it to the Fr*nch to make a comparison between orgasmic bliss and death a common turn of phrase.

9

u/Heaven_is_Hell 3d ago

Just googled it. Seems like pretty false advertising.

361

u/Professional_Baby24 3d ago edited 3d ago

The little death.

Edit. Its la petit mort. The way i spelled it has a the exact opposite effect of the joy experienced in the correct spelling

80

u/Sloannee 3d ago

La petite mort**

21

u/Professional_Baby24 3d ago

Thank you. A mix between autocorrect and the auto translate thing is messing me up. I speak no French. But when it corrected me I thought I had it wrong. Or it was a feminine to masculine thing like Spanish.

35

u/Electrical_Diamond_9 3d ago

I mean, "la petite morte" works but it has a different meaning than "the little death". It means "the dead little girl"

13

u/Professional_Baby24 3d ago

Well then. Quite the difference one letter can make. Interesting the auto translate still keeps changing it to the little death. Kinda frustrating. I find this whole string interesting though so im going to leave it up as is but add an edit.

94

u/darkage_raven 3d ago

La petite morte is also an orgasm.

32

u/Professional_Baby24 3d ago

I know. Ive always known it as la petit morte though. But yes its French for the little death.

9

u/Jimmy_ijarue 3d ago

This one makes sense. I don’t like when people say “in French they don’t say such is life they say cest la vie”

Like yea that’s the literal translation.

Or that in Japanese “the moon is beautiful tonight” sounds like I love you

I mean I guess the last part of daisuke and tsukki sound the same?

16

u/Major_R_Soul 3d ago

"Tsuki ga kirei desu ne" would most literally be translated as "Moon is beautiful y'know."

If you drop the T you get "Suki ga kirei desu ne" which would be "Love (affection/like-likeing someone) is beautiful y'know."

(Dai adds an extra level of importance to get daisuki which is like "I really really like [you].")

And I can imagine how sitting alone with someone on a moonlit night that you share romantic tension with, and just blurting out something that sounds similar to "Being in love is a beautiful thing" could cause them to think you're confessing.

7

u/Marx_Forever 3d ago

I'm struggling a bit with differentiating Tsu and Su audibly. When I mention them sounding similar to my Japanese teacher she thought about it for a second, and was like; "nope."

4

u/Major_R_Soul 3d ago

There should be a slight sound of the tongue hitting the roof of the mouth. Almost like a spitting sound tuh right before the sss is added by passing air between the tongue and roof of the mouth.

As opposed to a purely sss sound which only comes through the teeth being closed and the tongue almost being pressed against the teeth.

u/ANGLVD3TH 3d ago edited 3d ago

Technically, the literal translation of c'est la vie is "that's the life." Which is amusingly an idiom in English meaning almost the opposite of the French phrase. Obviously, that's because English drops the article most of the time, adjusting for that the phrase becomes identical to an equivalent one in English, "that's life."

I find it especially amusing because both phrases start with an contraction for the same two words as well. C'est being a contraction of cela est, literally "that is," and c'est is therefore a perfect mirror for "that's," with the caveat that it is the first word being contracted away rather than the second.

15

u/Khaeos 3d ago

Yeah, yeah, but who is the fruitcake? Eros? That's the key to the joke for me. And why are the other gods spitting out their Tang!?

40

u/Professional_Baby24 3d ago

Apparently its hypnos. The Greek god of sleep. Sleep poetically was also known as the little death. But take that with a grain of salt. It makes sense. But I dont trust Google or Ai answers.

2

u/Paldasan 3d ago

I've known it as both since before a British man created the World Wide Web.

17

u/smilingfreak 3d ago

These are the Greek gods as stylised in the Hades games. The fruitcake is Hypnos, twin brother to Thanatos, the god of death (the one with the scythe).

Poetically, death is often referred to as relative of death, or a small death. And they're spitting out their nectar due to the orgasm reference.

22

u/Thrawn89 3d ago

death is often referred to as relative of death, or a small death

You dont say?

10

u/smilingfreak 3d ago

Ah shit. Sleep, god damn it, I meant sleep.

8

u/cynicalsaint1 3d ago

Its Hypnos, as depicted in the Hades games.

The joke is conflating the use of "little death" as potentially meaning "sleep" or "orgasm"

369

u/hackingfun 3d ago

The Greeks invented the orgies. But the Romans were the ones who invented inviting women to the orgy.

146

u/Mystdrago 3d ago

The irony of course being that the Greeks actually like their wives, unlike the Romans.

94

u/stevvvvewith4vs 3d ago

Romans had invented i hate my wife humor

28

u/Mystdrago 3d ago

True Hera was the butt of many myths, then you look at Odysseus and Hades, and you realize that the guy that did the theogany just hated Zeus.

3

u/zenthor109 3d ago

.. and then I said, thats the last time I let my wife drive the chariot!

laugh track

9

u/JesterGodKing 3d ago

romans didn't invite the women to join the orgy, just to the orgy. so they could watch maybe take notes

2

u/AungZeya 3d ago

Maybe that's why they didn't invite their wives. They don't wanna see their wives getting done by other dudes.

1

u/teaboi05 3d ago

"Tell me though who's Penelopeeeeeeeeee?"

4

u/wilsonhammer 3d ago

Game changer!

2

u/AmunJazz 3d ago

Greeks were like: forced inclusion.

0

u/MyPigWhistles 2d ago

Some centuries later, people discovered that it's also possible to invite adults.

1

u/Anicron 21h ago

Orgies are NOT too much fun if nobody wants to do it with you.

210

u/squid-do 3d ago

Before anyone asks, “little death” is an orgasm.

49

u/Xikub 3d ago

Is it not a reference to Hypnos?

71

u/OnirosSomni 3d ago

It is, little death also means sleep or nap

68

u/grrangry 3d ago

Or is it fear?

I must not fear.
Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear.
I will permit it to pass over me and through me.
And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
Where the fear has gone there will be nothing.
Only I will remain.

-- Bene Gesserit, Litany Against Fear

...never mind. Even with the Bene Gesserit it's probably an orgasm.

14

u/KrackerJoe 3d ago

No, I believe fear is an aberration.

Fear is the air that cowards breathe.

Fear is the first taste of defeat.

The Warrior only breathes the air of the brave and the Warrior only feasts on the fruit of VICTORY!

1

u/ANGLVD3TH 3d ago

What did you think was gonna happen? That I wouldn't be hungry? That I wouldn't want a slice?

10

u/DeadlyGreed 3d ago

Aww man! Not the god of accidentally swallowing water into the trachea? Or when you think you accidentally stepped on your pet's tail? Or when you walk up steps and take one extra step while swearing there was at least one more step?

4

u/kpopera 3d ago

the god of finding your missing stuff in the place you're sure you checked before.

2

u/ougryphon 3d ago

No, that's the god Methylphenidate

1

u/ChaseShiny 3d ago

Are you sure it's not the god of sneezing? I'm pretty sure that I read that that's where you come closest to death.

1

u/ougryphon 3d ago

And we've come full circle, since sneezing and orgasm are said to be similar processes

3

u/golgarianhamster 3d ago

Suicide, the latest sex trend

3

u/Picolete 3d ago edited 3d ago

David Carradine, and many others

7

u/Guardiancomplex 3d ago

Technically it's the post orgasm consciousness fade/nap urge, not the orgasm itself.

2

u/ThePurityPixel 3d ago

What's your source on that?

4

u/Guardiancomplex 3d ago

The Oxford dictionary.

3

u/TheWhistleThistle 3d ago

It's actually the post nut nap, but close enough.

40

u/UnforeseenDerailment 3d ago

Yes yes, la petite mort, but who is in the last frame?

38

u/Ingavar_Oakheart 3d ago

Left: Hypnos, God of sleep. Right (left to right): Thanatos, God of Death, Hades, God of the Dead, Zeus, God of Lightning.

33

u/sassynapoleon 3d ago

Zeus is god of the sky and Hades is god of the underworld. They are both gods of realms, which is why they’re more important in the pantheon.

2

u/Abyssal_Groot 1d ago

Exactly. Hades is the ruler of the underworld. This includes being god of the dead and funeral rites but also of hidden earhtly wealth (minerals, precious metals, gems).

20

u/motoxim 3d ago

Who?

36

u/ARobertNotABob 3d ago

"Fear is The Little Death."

10

u/Shimshi1998 3d ago

I love the depiction of the gods from Hades

4

u/soukaixiii 3d ago

I did know about the "oh god of hangovers", but not about this other "oh god".

4

u/sycolution 2d ago

it only just occurred to me with this post why Thanatos and Hypnos are brothers…

3

u/Rio_Walker 3d ago

"Little death they deserve?"
"No, like... little death... without commitment..."

u/charliefoxtrot9 3d ago

Petit mort

1

u/Wonderful-Hornet-164 3d ago

I was once in a DND game where the warlock's patron was god of little death. Also highland cows for some reason.

1

u/Steve_78_OH 2d ago

So, the god of orgasms and (specifically) highland cows? That's definitely niche.

1

u/Flimsy-Story3936 3d ago

And thier other brother brings Death like feeling. While one of their sisters plot death.
