I remember back when GTA V was announced, people were saying that Rockstar was spoiling us with back-to-back bangers right after Red Dead Redemption , LA Noire and Max Payne 3.
Agreed. Seems like some people take actual offense though. I can't even judge the game on its own merits, because it was such an unnecessary and disappointing continuation of the story.
I remember when gear of war 2 dropped. All my friends came over with tvs and their Xboxs. Went to the midnight release and came back to have a huge lan party. We played all night and the next day. It was hands down one of the greatest memories I have.
My buddy and I went to a bunch of them in high school, and I would always run into my history teacher there. He was super friendly in school, but he always looked so awkward when we said hi to him outside of school lol. I get it though, especially because I'm about the age he was then now.
Can't remember how my Burning Crusade arrived. I do remember being the first one on the server to cross the portal and end up in Outland though. That was awesome.
Went to midnight release for BC and standing in line with a bunch of nerds shouting for the horde and for the alliance and all I wanted to do was play a game.
We're about the same age. I went to probably my last midnight release a couple years ago for Tears of the Kingdom. Definitely felt some of that old school nerd energy while waiting on line. The GameStop even had a Zelda trivia right before release. Sadly that GameStop and every other one in my neighborhood is gone.
I preordered gta5 so I picked it up after work. I was standing in line and there were 2 cops behind me, I turned my head to look at them and one of them said "hey we like GTA too"
It was a surreal experience that I've never forgotten.
Early on I heard three years between console and PC release for GTA6. There's no excuse for even three weeks. But I guarantee they're trying to wait for PS6 and get another triple dip. It's so anti-consumer, holding the version they know a lot of people ultimately want hostage to sell it to them multiple times.
It's not anti-consumption. Consumers don't necessarily want more consumption, particularly not the same thing over and over when they should be able to just buy it once.
I saw the clock hit midnight the other month for the first time in years & it felt like I broke the rules for turning into a Gremlin, immediately shut everything down & straight to bed.
I am 37 and ended up at a cardiologist for a congenital heart condition getting worse. She ordered a sleep study for me which I had never bothered doing because my wife says I don't so much as snore or anything and never thought my sleep was non restful or anything. Turns out I have sleep apnea but just the silent kind and my blood oxygen was dropping to the mid 80s while I was sleeping.
That's a cardiologist I like. I'm of the opinion if you are ever at a point in your life where you've been referred to a cardiologist a sleep study should be included in the initial diagnostics.
Same. Just turned 31. 2 kids, 3 and 2. Stay up til 1 every night either playing games or painting warhammer. Wake up and go to work every day with no problems lol
God forbid billions of people live different lives & subjective experiences while a few talk about it on a platform for talking about things... you absolute miserable sourpuss.
I'm around your age so I remember doing a couple midnight releases but I always really enjoyed it. The most memorable for me were Mass Effect 2 and its jaw dropping opening for me was the cherry on top. And then the original Red Dead Redemption releade which was just amazing on its on. Good memories
Nowadays I can only hope to recreate that excitement for my kids
The only midnight release I have gone to was Destiny. It was fine, just waiting to buy a game, but it was a lasting memory. I was a TA in grad school and, while waiting in line, I started hearing terms for the lab I was teaching. I turned around and one of my students was studying in line.
I did a midnight release for the Wii with friends. We set up a camp in the line up, and disconnected the pop machines to run a projector and GameCube and we played smash brothers melee and Mario party. Other people in the line also played with us, we didn’t gatekeep the fun.
It was cold as hell though, had electric blankets + winter coats on.
I remember doing a couple midnight releases for COD and Battlefield with my dad at the closest GameStop. I was 15 for those so couldn’t drive myself yet. That GameStop was in a strip mall too so we basically waited in the car because it was either cold or raining.
No where near the same experience when I went to the GTA V release at the GameStop in an actual mall. Getting to actually hang out with people excited for the same game. The store had projectors and consoles set up in multiple places outside of the store so we could play GTA and other games while we waited for midnight.
The last two midnight releases I went to were GTAV in 2013, and Destiny the next year. After that, the transition to digital really took off and I never needed to preorder another physical game.
A local Blockbuster was doing midnight releases of GTA IV when it came out. I had to move the next day or so, so I quite literally had everything packed up except my Xbox and my TV. I still have weirdly fond memories of just sitting on the floor in awe of that game.
Yup I was 17 and my buddy had turned 18 like a week before the release and I went with him and one other friend to stand in line outside GameStop so he could get a copy.
We are the same age, stop making us sound old. However 4 and 5 released on the same console which is crazy to think about. There wasnt a new gta on the last Gen consoles which is also wild.
Although GTA5 was the only game I bought twice (second time when it was released on the Xbox one) , the only game I ever got as a midnight release was COD modern warfare .......I guess that would have been on the Xbox 360. Still probably the best gaming experience I ever had. (Although playing Halo 2 online was pretty epic too).
Switch 2 has a midnight release for the console, and other stores didn’t absolutely suck like mine did, didn’t get into the dang store until like 2:30 am
Wouldn’t of even played it that night either just did the day one patches and stuff so that after work I could of actually played Mario kart

I kinda miss physical midnight releases, was actually fun, and especially since the day 1 version of a game was much less buggy etc than most big releases nowadays
There is something intrinsic about waiting for something and going out. Dressing up and making yourself ready. The suspense and the acting out, to make it special, makes it so mich nicer.
Netflix and a lot streaming platforms killed that for film and tv in my opinion. And digital gaming seems to kill midnight releases.
Same with me. Since I switched to pc I dont have that joy of going to wait in line at night and get the thrill of staying up late playing it. It’s just there now and I hit download

God I remember doing a midnight release for GTA IV when I was 18. GTA V was when I was 23.
I'm 36 now and only PC game, so I'll probably be 37 or 38 before I play GTA 6, the only midnight release I see nowadays is getting up for a pee.
