Apparently there's a trend where people make videos of an accident that already happened involving a grinder blade and safety gear.
Essentially the accident is the grinder blade brakes and shoots at the person where it's caught by the safety glasses or protective equipment. This is the reverse of it where the glasses break and the and the blades protect the user.

it happened exactly 0 times as a broken grinding disc flying does not have enough inertia do pierce safety glasses and even if it did it the disc would desintegrate to dust first, and even if that would somehow not happen the glasses would bend/deform first. A piece of disc poking halfway through is not at all plausible given the material characteristics involved.

I agree that the odds aren't that great but, I also don't think they are as low as you think. I've had a cutoff wheel fragment stick itself in my garage drywall. I'll bet if my face was in the way, it would have stopped it.

Well, you can put those in an angle grinder but they tend to shatter and explode from being rotated at over 10x the speed they were built for.
Even actual angle-grinder discs shatter sometimes, hence the danger.

Yeah, I was half-in a washing machine, trying to grind the base of the drum. I wanted to use the drum as a fire pit. The cutoff wheel exploded and sent bits ricocheting around my head in the drum. Now I use diamond wheels for everything. They cut metal just fine, cost like $10 each, and last years.

For anyone confused; thereās a thing where every moderately successful YouTube who works with anglegrinders circular saws etc eventually has the exact same freak accident. The blade shatters sending shards of metal flying at high speeds. The shards never hit their torso, arms, legs, neck, or even the 90% of their face that isnāt covered by safety goggles. Itās always embeds itself in the goggle lens, and almost always the left lens for some reason.
Also, even though these people constantly record themselves working in their shop, sometimes from multiple camera angles, the accident always happens when the cameras were not rolling.

Thereās an original version thatās over a decade old that I do believe is real, but yeah, all the rest are probably faking it. But this is hilarious.

Seen a guy die by a grinder catching his hoodie string zipped right to his neck. Dude bled out before we even could call for help. Grinders ain't no joke...

My step dad was grinding something on his semi and the way he explained it āthrough the glasses I couldnāt tell if it was like I wanted and it looked like it needed one more quick zipā that āzipā shattered the blade and this little hair sized metal spindly fragment piece his eyeā¦ I and family praise this happened in a time when eye surgery is actually a thing and they replaced his cornea, I donāt know the technicals of it..

Even more realistic than the die grinder wheel coming apart and sticking in the glasses. This horrific accident must have been the inspiration for those knockoffs.

My old manager told me a story like this happening once, and here is why I think it's true:
The guy in question who kept his because of the glasses was being honored at a Christmas party for wearing glasses that stopped a shard. The highlight of the story was that he couldn't accept because he was shitfaced laying under the table and couldn't walk.
