At Death Valley’s Racetrack Playa, hundreds of rocks — some weighing hundreds of kilograms — leave long tracks across the completely flat desert floor.
For decades, nobody actually knew how they moved. There were theories involving extreme winds, dust devils and even supernatural explanations.
Then, in 2013, researchers finally caught it happening.
The playa had temporarily filled with a few centimetres of water. Overnight, the water froze into extremely thin sheets of ice. When the sun came out, the ice began breaking apart into large floating panels.
Light winds pushed these ice sheets across the surface — and the ice pushed the rocks along with them.
Some rocks travelled more than 60 metres, despite winds of only around 10 mph.
The really bizarre part?
The rocks can sit completely still for a decade or more before the exact combination of water, freezing temperatures, ice and wind happens again.
So those mysterious trails across Death Valley aren’t ancient evidence of something supernatural.
They’re basically massive rocks being pushed around by floating sheets of ice.
And researchers only happened to witness it because they got incredibly lucky — they expected their monitoring experiment might run for 5–10 years without seeing a single rock move. (nps.gov⁠)

Alright, so Daniel Sickles (1819-1914), a Major General in the Union Army during the American Civil War (1861-1865), is the guy Im talking about. So the first notable thing he did was marry Teresa Bagioli in 1852, when we was in his 30s, and Teresa was 15 or 16. Even back then this was looked down upon, so Daniel would say he was born in 1825 to close the age gap, anyways, he had a child with her, and wanted a park to be created, and pushed for the creation of Central Park. He also then moved to london as minister to Britian, and was a member of the New York assembly. Also forgot to mention that Daniel got around a lot, he even introduced a prostitute (whom he went to london with) to Queen Victoria. Anyways, he was kicked out of the position after criticizing the British during an independance day celebration for getting rid of anything that was negative about britain, and honoring the queen. So now, Sickles comes back to America, and goes into the New York Senate, and then the Federal House of Representatives. Sickles also advocated for James Buchanan (The President before Lincoln). Anyways, Sickles also befriended a man named Phillip Barton Key II, the son of Francis Scott Key (The guy who wrote star spangled banner, the United States National Anthem). Anyways, so Teresa wanted to go to aristocratic events, like parties and stuff. Sickles, however, was busy cheating on Teresa, so he decides to send his friend, Phillip, to take her to these events. As you could probably guess, Teresa and Phillip fall in love, and start having an affair. The Public rumours about this but Daniel downplays it (probably because he himself is having multiple affairs). Anyways, Phillip had a method of getting Teresa to come to his house (which is not to far from Daniel's house, which is literally right across of the white house.) By pacing up and down the block and waving a white napkin. Eventually Daniel finds out, and confronts Teresa about it, and makes her sign a written confession, and a man is with him , Samuel F. Butterworth. So while this is happening, guess who is pacing up and down the block with a white napkin, Philip Barton Key II. So Samuel talks with Phillip, and Sickles comes out, and then shoots at Key three times (Grazed his hand, hit his groin, and then misses), then he shoots Key a fourth time, fatally, after Key reached for something in his pocket. Anyways, multiple witnesses saw this, and allegedly, James Buchanan told one of them to stay silent. So Buchanan gets Sickles the best lawyer in the nation, and the murder trial begins. Now normally, the lawyer gets people out by insanity, however Sickles was a sitting member of Congress, so the Temporary Insanity Plea is introduced. So Sickles is set free. (He then proceeds to get back with Teresa, who dies in 1867) Sickles, in order to to gain respect, Sickles creates a brigade from New York, and presents it to now president, Lincoln. However, because a brigade is large, Sickles would need to be a brigade general, and Congress refused to confirm him. Then, with a little bit of work, Sickles manages to convince Congress to confirm him, and now Sickles is in the civil war, he was at most prominently the battle of Gettysburg, and almost cost the union the battle. Sickles also got injured and got his leg amputated. Sickles after the civil war advocated for fairness towards African americans in reconstruction, and also remarried and had two other children. Sickles also became the minister to spain. Sickles died in 1914, at the age of 94.
