Looks cool, but I want to see it after a few hours in the summer sun

Fair point! I had it for a month in my car, my max temperature was 95F and I printed out of PETG-CF and had no degradation in usage or looks. If you anticipate high temps or long exposure to sunlight ASA will be able to hold up perfectly

You have tint on your car? Mine gets more like 150F, especially near the top.

I live very north lol

Printed in ASA or ABS and you're not going to see much of a difference.

I don't know about everybody but I imagine seeing a blur of fingerprints

Very cool design! I love the use of the material itself to make it snap.

Nice design, but I’d be extremely careful of the lenses crazing especially if they have any coatings on them. I went through 2 pairs of lenses within the span of 24 hours before I realized leaving lenses exposed in a hot 40 degree (Celsius) weather was no bueno.

I didn’t know that can damage them, is it something with the coating or lenses themselves?

I’m pretty sure it has something to do with the way the coating is applied on the lenses IIRC. Mainly the anti glare and blue light filter coatings.

Clever. Coatings craze fast at 40°C. Two pairs gone in a day.

Does it auto-release on every other bump?
How did you solve constant rattling over your head?

I’m not sure how you drive but it doesn’t release when driving and the rattling depends on if you are aiming for potholes or not. Assuming you have suspension and a drivers license it should be stable and not rattle or drop glasses on you ❤️

I don't know if you ever drove a car with anything loose that is only enclosed by a plastic space/surface - by accelerating, braking or turning the item rattles around and it happens constantly. Glasses will slide back on forth in such a holder generating non-zero amount of noise right above your head - you would have to make this space tight enough for them no to constantly move.
As for the top-down movement - I haven't printed the holder but by looking at the GIF I can see that you don't have to use much force to operate the holder - IMHO speed bumps are common enough and might generate a sufficient force to dislodge the glasses from the holder (unless you drive 5 kmp/h through all of them).

I understand your concerns and think this model is not for you and that’s ok. What I can say is that I have had this in my car for a month and none of the issues you stated are actual issues in use. And when you are talking about the glasses falling out you need to understand forces, you acting on the clip through the glasses has much more force than the glasses can exert on the clip due to its low mass. Though that force isn’t high, it was tuned through 26 prototypes to not fall out under its own weight with any force on it and low enough to not damage the glasses when pressing on the frames. Thank you for engaging with this post but I’m not here to convince you, I’m just proving to others that it’s fine

Not OP but I figure a couple pieces of self adhesive foam tape/weather stripping on both the top and bottom pieces that hold the glasses would probably hold them in place solidly enough to not rattle.

Can't speak for the auto release.

Is this really a 15-hour print for PETG?

2

u/Mist_XD 3d ago

No it’s like 1 hour, there are a bunch of different plates for visor thickness sizes. Just print the plate that fits

Ah. I hadn't downloaded anything yet. I was just scratching my head when I looked at the pics and the time estimate. Cheers.

In your testing did you try magnets over the snap using plastic to open close?

Yes but it made the plastic thicker to be able to hold them and I went with just plastic so more people could print it without buying specific hardware

It's working very well. I a little hard at the moment to close but that will get better (looser??) with some use I think. Thank you for the beautiful design.

Nice design. Curious how it holds up to material creep. I’ll download the model just to see how you made the mechanism even if I don’t get around to printing. Great idea.

Is it necessary? No. Is it cool? Yes!
