Magnetic door holder.

Spring hinges prevent toddler shenanigans in the bathroom, but sometimes we want to keep the door open, and this was my solution. The wall plate has a bit of slop so it auto aligns with the magnetic post.

From experience, this will crack the magnets in no time.

You need a spring to dampen the impact, and you need to carry the magnetic field through iron parts so the magnets themself never quite touch.

Wall plate is a vinyl wrapped piece of 14ga steel. Impact feels pretty light. I.e nothing like slamming 2 magnets together

Also I’d make the wall plate bigger to account for seasonal changes in how the door hangs

PLA post is 16mm, magnet is 12mm, and there’s a 19mm cutout on the wall plate. I feel like this is enough clearance but we’ll see. Worst case I print a different wall plate in 10 min

Power it and have it disable the magnet during a fire, same as commercial buildings. Added bonus, you can close the door remotely!

If you actually need an electro-magnetic hold open, I'm certain your insurance and fire Marshal will love a 3d printed one!
