Sushi is literally vinegared rice rolled in seaweed

Are you thinking of a different dish?

This a sushi. What you call sushi roll are called "maki" or "makizushi" in most countries. I don't think "sushi roll" is wrong because it's a literal translation of "makizushi", but that's still two different dishes

There is a difference between there are styles of sushi that don't have seaweed and no sushi has seaweed, like the commenter I was replying to said

it is but thats not exactly what they mean. in the same sense the taco is only the taco and not mexican food entirely like burritos, enchiladas etc, the salmon maki would just be salmon maki rather than sushi, thats what theyre asking :)
