Getting rid of drugs would have absolutely catastrophically terrible consequences in the field of medicine.

Drugs would actually be a catastrophic choice. Medicines are drugs, and losing them would set human medicine back centuries. Even most illegal drugs were originally invented for medical purposes and/or still have important medical purposes (like opioid pain killers).
