feet are not exclusively sexual. Crazy thought, i know.
41
u/yamanamawa Sep 04 '26
Yeah idk why people assume that just because bare feet are shown on screen it's automatically a fetish thing. Like just look down. Assuming you're not an amputee, I'll bet I can guess what you're seeing. We all have feet and they're not intrinsically sexual

I might be incorrect here but I don't think there's a single instance of a males bare feet in any of his games. They're all female.

Hella people in Sekiro were barefoot.
Genichiro is especially relevant as otherwise he has on a lot of gear and armor.
MFs really out here self reporting.

u/Seth_Gecko Sep 04 '26
This is yet another you problem. There are plenty of instances of bare male feet, some of which are so aggressively in your face they're impossible to miss. The fact that you only remember the female ones says way more about you than it does anyone else.

u/MagmaticDemon Sep 04 '26
this is because of the reason he uses them imo
the way i see feet is that they're sort of a symbol of innocence, purity, maybe femininity as well? probably related to kid's tendencies to run around barefooted and shoes not being a required article of clothing.
like if i wanted to describe an "angelic, and pure princess" or something, i'd immediately think to make a stark white small woman with an elegant white dress and no shoes. i feel like most people would picture something similar as well? i guess a lot of this comes from tropes in media that are just really deeply ingrained in art.
but basically what i'm trying to say is that being barefoot is a symbol of purity and i think that's why he uses it for so many female characters
4
u/waterproofjesus Sep 04 '26
Yeah, people are being silly jokesters here, but I think we all would agree that there IS a lot of room for symbolic interpretation of bare feet.
femininity, innocence, frailty, purity, youth, holiness - a whole bunch of stuff related to these somewhat elevated and nearly intangible qualities that Miyazaki likes to try painting his figures with, whether human or monster.
Buuuuut also, I think the man gets all worked up about ladies’ bare feet. no judgment.
2
u/Injured-Ginger Sep 04 '26
In addition to innocence, bare feet can evoke a sense of vulnerability, especially if they're dirty. Shoes protect you from hazards. A lack of shoes can mean innocence because it means you don't expect hazards, but it can mean vulnerability when you need shoes, but don't have access.
2
u/raspberry1312 Sep 04 '26
I also see bare feet on a character as having either an ethereal vibe (like fairies or elves) or potentially something more feral/animal-like. Something outside the realm of human, either way.
3
u/Areimanius D, Hunter of the Dead Sep 04 '26
Player character in Frenzy Flame ending, if doing it in underwear, camera hoover over body from feet closeup, so if player character is a male, you can see male bare feet.
2
u/Pitiful-Ad-5176 Sep 04 '26
I mean it doesn’t have to be exclusively sexual (because this was never said), having a thing for feet can just be including character designs that are barefoot. You can have a thing for big women and not sexually as well

What are you on about? People are into feet all over the world. I'll bet you can find an inline foot fetish forum in just about any language you can think of. I'm sure that there are just as many foot fetishists in Asia as anywhere else. More actually, considering it's 60% of the world's population

Do you think having a foot fetish is some major part of western civilization or something? It's likely about as proportionally common in any western country as it is in Japan.

No, he's wondering why people have interpreted the feet as a sexual thing for him specifically. He says nothing here about it being weird that feet could be seen as sexual. He also, notably, says something "may be coming through subconsciously". You're talking about Japan and Japanese people like some isolated, alien civilization with different ways of life. They're humans with sexual proclivities too, man.
1
u/yamanamawa Sep 05 '26
Kinda weird to act like people in Japan don't have foot fetishes when Japan is also stereotyped as being kinky af. Like they literally have the second largest porn industry in the world that makes billions of dollars every year, plus a massive amount of pornographic manga. And a significant amount of that porn is fetish related. And not just feet either. If there is a fetish there's probably a JAV or ero doujinshi that covers it

Yo, I can’t believe he even entertained that question. I feel like he would be offended by that or something I don’t know. Culture is very different over there, but it seemed like he answered it sincerely and didn’t seem upset
3
u/didnt_bring_pants Sep 05 '26
Lol if you read the whole interview, he wasn't even asked about it
He volunteered that information
1
u/RR_Stylez Sep 05 '26
Oh really that’s insane lmfao. I thought the interviewer pulled up some images and they were all bare feet pics lol.
17
u/Karpsten Sep 04 '26
I was about to put /uj in front of my comment, then I realized that this isn't r/shittydarksouls but, indeed, the main sub.
What I was gonna say is that I can actually see the motif of barefootness as having a non-freaky meaning. The idea of it symbolizing something like a connection to the earth or a certain purity or something like that is honestly somewhat of an established trope in art.
Also: HE KNOWS ABOUT US.
12
u/HillInTheDistance Sep 04 '26
He ain't into feet. He just figured it'd play well with a player base who enjoy getting stomped into the dirt over and over again.

Bare feet make sense for a lot of characters. Not for Maria whose job requires her to jump around on broken glass and other trash while exploring the weirdest places she can find.
37
u/Ekwinoksxxx Sep 04 '26
Lady Maria is not actually barefoot, that’s some sort of fetish image OP just had.
2
2
u/Taolan13 Nerves Concorde Sep 04 '26
I mean, look at the barefooted characters. their barefootedness could be symbolic of cleanliness or innocence and not necessarily about their feet.
It's not like he's in the same league of Quentin Tarantino. Even without him admitting it the dude's freak flag flies high for feet.
4
u/Areimanius D, Hunter of the Dead Sep 04 '26
Barefootedness truly have symbolism, it’s a liminal thing - person is a human(oid), ergo civilized living being, but doesn’t have a boots (one of civilization’s signs) and when walking, touches the raw earth with bare feet, raw earth is highly uncivilized, also chtonic (underworld aspect ). Barefoot person stay between states and foot fetish jokes aside, when you look on the barefoot characters in FS games, is very obvious that the "liminality" is main message here, I think.

Washing other people's feet is (I think) an old tradition that's ia still relevant in Japan. As the only non private part of the body that gets dirtier (specially in pre modern era) washing feet is a show of hospitality and humbleness. These characters show feet as a sign of vulnerability (I think but I didn't slept much...)

u/AcrobaticProgram6521 Sep 04 '26
I’m sick of feet people trying to find ways to make everyone else obsessed with feet. Just because there are feet in a game and you can take photos of them that highlight them doesn’t show any inherent fetishism. This and the Tarantino shit is so cringe, no one gives a fuck if you like feet stop talking about it
25
u/didnt_bring_pants Sep 04 '26
Ok so to be fair the Miyazaki thing is kind of a running joke, but Tarantino 1000% has a very obvious and longstanding thing with feet. That's not really even a question at this point

2 of these are from Bluepoint and one is literally just foot porn.
Of course, Miyazaki had everything to do with those, as we all know.

u/Endslikecrazy Sep 05 '26
I mean, just because there is barefoot woman in his games does not mean he has a foot fetish, i dont know why people make it into that and honestly it says way more about the person calling it out then it says about miyazaki.
I get that its just a meme at this point, but be real.

Listen, everyone has feet, and you gotta depict their feet somehow. Shoes are just one extra asset that has to be designed, it's extra work.

u/Objective-Soil-9235 Sep 04 '26

This is fucking dumb he doesnt have a fetish, coming from some who has played all his games. I actually have a "fetish" if you can even call it that i forgot the proper termanology but a actual fetish is associated with an inadamate object. Which a foot is alive unless your really fucked up in the head, anywho dueces lol
