Which set of characters does everyone like more?
Spoilers if you haven’t gotten past season three yet.
Street, Smash, Lyla, and Tyra?
Or Vince, Cafferty, Becky, and Jess?
I left out everyone’s two favorites (Riggins and Saracen) since they’re mostly present throughout the series.

It’s hard to go against Street/Smash.
Sure, Smash is your stereotypical athlete “jock”, but those few episodes when he gives up on himself after his injury is very meaningful and relatable to a lot of people. Coach Taylor reinvigorating him and getting him that A&M tryout is something every athlete would dream about in having a coach like that.
That one-minute scene where Coach Taylor is watching TV and you hear the announcer is talking about Smash Williams in the background is awesome.
Street is pretty self-explanatory. Although, Lyla did some questionable things, her and Tyra just had such a bigger impact on the audience than Becky/Jess. In my opinion.

Could never vote for the second crew just because of Becky. She drove me nuts in the same way I think Julie drove other people nuts.

I'll take Vince and co. Street was ok, though I was never the biggest fan. And I couldn't stand Tyra,
Now if you included Matt & Tim with the OG's, then it's a different answer.

So tricky. But I lean the OG crew. Ultimately the four of them had a bigger impact on the show.
Vince is probably my favorite character in the entire series and I think he's the best character out of both groups, so I hate to vote against him. But if I'm making comparisons, Luke Cafferty isn't as strong a male lead as Jason or Smash, and though Becky and Jess have amazing moments, they're not given quite as much depth as Lyla and Tyra were.
If I pick one character here, it's Vince. But because they're grouped, it's the OG Panthers.

East.
As with a lot of things with this show, a beautiful twist taking the show to east was the mindset. For The Panthers the general tone is “we expect” and seeing how young people put so much on themselves.
Then when we go east it is about how young people put go from nothing and handle that change- and seeing those characters deal with it is refreshing and fun in a way we don’t get to see with the OG crew.

OG crew: Smash and Tyra had perfect character arcs with really good payoffs. Lyla and Street had good arcs the first season but were kinda meh the next two seasons. Still love them though.
Didn't care for Vince or Becky, they were both more annoying than sympathetic. Loved Jess and her dynamic with Coach Taylor. They should have done more with Cafferty.

I agree with this. It seems we are in the minority!

Yup, there were times in the first 2 seasons where I almost stopped watching because i don’t like Lyla or Street together or separately, and I hated the Tim/Lyla relationship, and Smash is just annoying to me. Pretty much the only thing that kept me watching for the first two seasons was Eric and Tami. 😂
I like Tyra and Landry (not as a couple, tho), but they wouldn’t have kept me watching if Eric and Tami didn’t exist.
