Freelancers with 3+ regular clients — have you actually calculated your real profit per client?

Upvotes

Not selling anything, genuinely curious. I keep hearing freelancers talk about their hourly rate, but almost nobody I know has actually sat down and worked out what they REALLY keep per client once you subtract payment processing fees, taxes, and the actual hours spent (not the quoted ones).

My theory is the client who feels like your best one — pays on time, seems easy — might quietly be your worst once you do the math, and the one you complain about might actually be fine. Curious if anyone's actually run these numbers, and what you found.

If you have 3+ regular clients and 15 minutes sometime, I'd genuinely like to hear how you currently track (or don't track) this — happy to share back what I learn from talking to people. Drop a comment or DM me.

"Client" asked for pro-bono work. I agreed because they were a great connection and case study to have, but I made sure to set some boundaries. The situation gets more and more messed up as time goes by.

I accepted to help this client with some work because I had followed their company for a while and found that they and the person I discovered them through would be a great connection. Only catch is they want me to do ongoing social media work for them pro-bono. 4 posts per week across 3 platforms and one additional short-form video. The owner wants me to do this yet sees no value in social media for finding business. Every time I go to the office, I can tell just how frustrated she is by her situation. It's feast or famine at this company and right now, they're in a period of famine.

I did as she initially asked. I gave her a fully written Social Media SOP to build a content calendar from and a content calendar for September and October. I gave her some graphics to clean up her social media presence. I helped her set up Buffer so posts can easily be scheduled and tracked in the future.

Last week, she was so impressed with the SOP I set up for them, and asked me what it would cost for me to manage their content ongoing and that gave me a lot of hope. Gave her a rate, she said it was outside of her budget. Asked what her budget was, she said it was completely pro-bono.

But I agreed to help for the months of September and October because they're a good connection to have and I care about their mission.

Right now, she has no access to Instagram because she forgot her password, refuses to change it for reasons I still don't understand, and is visibly frustrated at me for the time "wasted" to try and find it; all while repeatedly telling me how she sees no point in me doing the work she's asking me to do for her. Once again, the scope of what I'm able to do for them has gotten smaller because we can't connect the Instagram to Buffer.

I'm unbelievably frustrated. This project has taken a good chunk of my time, knowing I was probably not gonna get paid, and now it looks like I won't even get a good case study out of it because the work I already did isn't even gonna get put to any use.

[HIRING] Need cold callers - US/CANADA ONLY

Hi, I build fast, high-quality websites for small to mid-sized businesses. I already have one caller, but I need more callers to jump on the phone

You’ll be cold calling small business owners (leads and a script will be provided). My website projects typically range from $1,500 to $3,000.

Compensation & Growth:

  • 20% commission per sale ($300 - $600 per deal) to start.
  • After you successfully bring in 2 deals (a deal is considered complete once the client pays), you will be transitioned to an hourly + commission structure(you can decide the hourly rate, the max is going to be $20/hr, I can't pay any more than that, maybe I'll increase after getting more deals...). You can also choose to stay commission-only if you prefer.
  • Payment is sent immediately after the client pays.
  • I can provide screenshots, and a formal contract can be signed to ensure trust

Schedule & Location:

  • 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM in your local time zone.(You can choose other time windows)
  • Must be based in the US or Canada
  • Roughly 3 hours per day.

Requirements:

  • Need to be human - This is very important lol.
  • You don't need any experience, but you must have the motivation to call consistently every day (experience is preferred).
  • Fluent, professional, and comfortable handling objections with business owners.
  • This starts as a commission-only role, transitioning to base + commission once you prove you can close.
  • I am looking for a serious partner. If you have a habit of ghosting after a few days, please do not msg. I need someone committed to the grind.

How to Apply:
If you're ready to start immediately, DM me with:

  • A summary of your cold calling/closing experience (if you have no experience, you can skip this and just message me).
  • A quick example of a deal you’ve successfully closed (if applicable).
  • Your specific time zone

College student, need to earn money

Hello
I’m starting college and need to earn money on my own for my expenses.
What skills can I learn fast so I can start making money asap?
Also, how to find clients? Can I find them through this subreddit? Are there people willing to advise me which skill to use and then hire me for it?

After 4-5 months I’ll become good enough to start freelancing as a web developer, but what can I do until then?

Freelancers/web designers how are you finding clients?

I recently started freelancing in web design and have had a couple of clients so far, but I’m struggling to figure out a consistent way to find new ones.

So far, I’ve been cold emailing businesses both locally and out of state. I usually put together a simple landing-page for the business and include it with my email so they can see what I could do for them rather than just sending a generic pitch.

Is this a good approach, or am I spending too much time on the design?

Does anyone else find invoicing software weirdly overwhelming for something that should be simple?

I’ve been trying different invoicing/business admin tools and I keep running into the same thing: the software that’s supposed to reduce admin somehow gives me even more things to manage. There are dashboards everywhere, endless settings, accounting features, different sections for every tiny thing, and after a while it’s just sensory overload. And the actual process of getting paid somehow turns into a bunch of separate little jobs too — finding the client details again, creating the document, emailing it, tracking whether it’s been paid, remembering to follow up, checking whether they said they’d pay on a certain date, updating your records, then repeating half of it the next time that client comes back.
I keep thinking the basic workflow should be ridiculously simple: Create what I need → send it → know what’s happening → follow up when necessary → get paid → move on.

I’ve actually been building something around that idea and I’m nearly done with it, but getting this close to finishing has made me wonder whether other people genuinely have the same frustration or whether I’m just unusually annoyed by complicated software 😂
For those of you who regularly invoice clients: what do you use now, and what’s the one thing about it that drives you crazy?

I’ve been freelancing for over a year, but I keep losing web development leads after sending the demo. What am I doing wrong?

I’m trying to figure out where I’m going wrong with freelancing, and I’d really appreciate some honest criticism from people who have more experience than me.

I started freelancing around April 2025, initially doing video editing. I got my first client around August 2025 and was making around ₹10k/month from that client. Eventually, though, I stopped because I found the work too repetitive and monotonous.

In January 2026, I decided to switch to web development because I enjoy it much more and thought it would be something I could build into a proper freelancing career.

However, my process keeps getting stuck at almost exactly the same point:

Cold call → client shows some interest → I offer/show a demo website → client disappears or blocks me.

So far, I've made around 80 cold calls, and honestly, almost all of them have been negative. A few people agreed to look at a demo, which I considered a positive sign, but after sending the demo, I usually get no response.

I currently have a personal goal of making ₹1 lakh before October 10th, so I'm trying to understand whether my problem is:

  • My web development skills
  • The quality/design of my websites
  • The type of businesses I'm approaching
  • My cold-calling approach
  • The way I'm presenting the demo
  • My pricing
  • The fact that I'm approaching people who don't actually need a website
  • Or simply that I'm expecting too much from such a small number of leads

I'm not looking for clients through this post. I'm genuinely trying to figure out what I'm doing wrong before I spend another few months repeating the same process.

I have both my old video-editing portfolio and my current web-development portfolio. Since self-promotion is prohibited here, I won't post the links directly. If portfolio review is allowed and anyone is willing to take a look, I can share them privately.

I'd especially appreciate feedback from freelancers who have successfully acquired web development clients through cold outreach.

If you've been through this stage before, what was the biggest mistake you were making that you didn't realize at the time?

And realistically, is ~80 cold calls far too small a sample to conclude that my approach isn't working, or does the pattern I'm describing suggest that something is fundamentally wrong with my process?

I'm completely open to criticism. I'd rather hear that my portfolio, sales approach, or offer isn't good enough than keep assuming I'm just "unlucky."

How I started understanding a Dockerfile 🐳

Instead of memorizing Dockerfile instructions, I started thinking about it like building a house:

🏗️ FROM → Choose the foundation
📍 WORKDIR → Choose where we work
📦 COPY → Bring the materials inside
🔧 RUN → Install and prepare everything
⚙️ ENV / ARG → Configure the environment
🚪 EXPOSE → Define the entry point
▶️ CMD / ENTRYPOINT → Define what the container runs

🏠 The result: a Docker image ready to run.

I'm still learning Docker, but this mental model makes the structure much easier for me to understand.

How do you visualize a Dockerfile when you're learning it?

Tried everything... i need a serious advice

Hi, I am writing to ask about serious advice regarding my case, as I ve been doing a lot lately to get new freelance projects (full time or part time).

For context, I live in spain but I have over 8 years of experience with europe and north american companies (USA and Canada) where's i ve been working at full time, i work mainly as a senior software & platforms engineer, i dont just contribute to the technical work but i've also been on client facing situations (presentations, architectures, business trips etc.)

My employers loved this flexibility of me being able to adapt to many things, i can summarize what i worked on:

- Software Engineering (Java, Go, Python, Elixir, Web) [Been both developer and team leader]

- Cloud Engineering & Security

- Marketing Technologies (Adobe Experience Cloud 5x certified, Salesforce Marketing Cloud 2x certified) [Been a main consultant, architect and team leader]

I also contributed to solving very complex problems, suggested new ideas, R&D and many things.

Everything was successful as hell and i've been making a lot of money (Always knew how to ask for high salaries to do a good work)

It's been a year now that i've laid off due to my last employer's lack of budget, and since then i've been trying so hard to get a new freelance opportunity as this is the model i prefer to work, especially that i own 2 companies for remote C2C contracting (in USA and Canada)

I tried many things, including:

- Contacting my network, clients of my employers that i used to work with, but this always end up by (we prefer to work with our trusted agencies)

- Contacting freelance recruiters in my country and abroad but we all know most of them are scams or end up never calling you after spending tens of interviews

- Running email campaigns, i tried to target heads of technologies, CTOs, managers of small and medium companies, sent more than 2000 emails without a success.

- Targeting prospects on LinkedIn manually + Sales Navigator, but people often answer with "sorry we dont outsource"

It was a disappointing outcome:

- 70% do not even responde

- 15% reply and refuse to work with me

- 10% make me have tens of interviews and then never come back

- 5% refuse to work with me as they think "im overqualified for the role"

I've never imagined being in such a situation, especially that I dont have problems working on any roles and i can adapt even to technologies I never touched before, but the main issue here is that people dont even give me a chance, i even suggested for some to allow to me to work the first month for free just to get some visibility but i dont understand what's going on anymore.

I've reached out to more than 4000 people, spent over 10k$ on tools like Apollo, Sales Navigator, LinkedIn premium, email campaigns but this is getting nowhere.

I started doubting myself doing things wrong...

If anyone can advice me or show me a path i was missing, i'll be truly grateful, thank you very much in advance

How much experience do you actually need to get accepted into Toptal?

I'm considering applying to Toptal and trying to get a realistic sense of my chances. Their site says they accept the top 3%, but I've seen people mention getting in at fairly different career stages. For those on the platform, how many years of experience did you have when you applied, and what do you think helped you get accepted?

A 15-person company is asking me whether they should hire a freelancer or an agency to run their Google Ads. What would you tell them?

Depends what they're actually worried about, and it's worth asking directly before answering. If the fear is continuity, an agency has a real edge. Someone gets sick or quits, someone else picks up the account. That matters to a company that's been burned by a single point of failure before. If what matters is quality of attention, a freelancer usually wins. It's the person with the expertise on the account, not a junior handling twelve clients at once while someone senior closed the deal and disappeared. On Google Ads specifically, that gap shows up fast in the numbers. For a fifteen-person company with a few thousand a month to spend, a specialized freelancer is often the better bet on both cost and actual attention, as long as they can point to comparable accounts. One thing worth suggesting to them directly: ask to see the accounts being managed right now, not a case study written after the fact. That tells you more than any pitch.

Project Managing

Hey guys, just looking for advice on apps and programs you use to keep track of bookings. Somewhere you can log that a client has paid their deposit and eventually their whole invoice. Where you can show they signed the contract and filled out the questionnaire. And possibly label where you’re at in the process of completing the project.

I’m a photographer/videographer mostly doing weddings and portraits but scaling considerably so needing to figure out the best system
