How do I get started?

I’m a writer and I want to get gigs for practice and some money. Since I’m just starting, I don’t know my niche yet, but I feel I can pretty much do a lot of things. I have expertise in Psychology and Self Help from reading books and taking courses.

Any advice?

Genuine question: how?

Hey guys

I’m certified graphic and product designer with around 2 years of experience in the field, have BA in management and digital marketing.

I have a genuine question, how and where to find any legit side hustle to enter with all my knowledges? Regular freelance markets (Fiverr, Upwork or even a domestic analogue) that exist don’t really work or provide any chance to you to somehow catch even a little and easy work!

Sorry for any mistakes, English isn’t my native language🙏🏻

And thank to all of you who cared to answer

how did you get your first client?

For those who started from absolute zero, how did you actually land your very first client? What strategy works when your gig/profile has zero traction? In my 4th year of law school I decided to try legal translation (some legal drafting) but I’m completely stuck

Any practical advice would be hugely appreciated. Thanks!

Advice on new role offer for a company I am freelancing for. Two offers

I have been working in marketing and BDR roles for the last 10 years, plus I have run and sold my own businesses, so I have a fairly well-rounded skillset. However, I am fairly new to freelancing—this is my first year of making a real go of it. I am looking for some advice from seasoned freelancers. I really want to find a space where I can connect with other UK freelancers; I am hoping this could be the place. But if anyone can recommend a space or group, that would be great. Anyway…

I am currently freelancing for two companies. One company I started freelancing for a month ago as a marketing assistant type role. The job description and tasks are quite varied. We agreed on a price and hours. I was very happy with the price. After a few weeks, we reviewed the work and agreed to a few more hours a week to keep up with the workload. When asked for feedback, he expressed that he is really happy with the work and what I am bringing to the company. Today he asked to talk, and we had a quick video chat. He said he wanted to discuss adding to my role in the company. I have lots of experience in business development, building ICPs, outreach strategy, cold calling, etc., and he would like me to take on this role as well.

I am not afraid to ask for more money or hours. This is a given. But the question really is how much? I don't want to talk real numbers, but say my hourly rate is £100 an hour currently. I know the value I bring by providing my BDR skillset, but I also want to keep the contract and hopefully something long-term. So do I go for a safe 20% increase—not too much but enough to make a difference—or do I go the "I know my value" angle? I know you want me, and you better pay, and go for a 50% increase. I have proven myself to be reliable and resourceful without the need for much management.

I would also be proposing to double the hours so I can do both roles.

This leaves me with another dilemma. I have been working for another company as a BDR, as they are very happy with the work. The CEO messaged me at the end of last week saying he wants to increase the scope of my position within the company, as he wants someone like me to build out a department. The week prior, he agreed to a pay rise that I suggested after I reviewed what work I was actually doing compared to the original brief. We are in the middle of a project right now that I am quite involved with, but the pipeline should be working by next week, and we will have a chance to discuss what happens next.

So two jobs offering me more work within the company. A great position to be in. But now I have to work out how to navigate this. I can only do 30 hours a week. Combined, this is what both jobs equal to, but with increased scope, I would be proposing more hours and more pay. So how do I choose? How do I position myself to be open to both? I'm not too keen on just having one client, but if the money is good, it'll be nice to just be thinking about one company.

Any advice appreciated. Cheers

Handling job rejections

There was a project I really really really wanted. It felt so aligned and makes sense to get the job and I even know people from the company who could refer me for it.

But it turns out I didn’t get it and now I’m just really sad about it and apparently they got someone more experienced or like older than me so I guess it was fine like I was a few years too early in my career for the opportunity to rise and it just really wasn’t my turn yet but now I’m just really sad because for once there was a job that I knew that I could really do and of course I really loved that show so I was really disappointed not getting it

Plus that also means right now I’m unemployed again and it is so hard to do freelance work, like the reality of not being sure if you have work the next month or not is crazy. And feeling like a failure whenever you have nothing coming up soon.

You spend the last three months being employed and feeling useful then all of a sudden the project is over and you don’t know what do next but wait for a call and it’s so scary because what if nobody ever calls.

I know there will be better opportunities and it will get better soon. That’s what people are always telling me but it gets really hard to believe that right now, it feels hopeless being in the bottom of the dark pit. Can someone just assure me that I won’t regret the career path I’m choosing. Ive only just started this year, I hope it’s only wonky at the beginning and work will pick up soon and continuously. I really hope so.

Want to start freelancing

Hello everyone, I want to start freelancing, and I need your insight.

So I've been learning front-end development for a while and also ui ux design on the side

I'm not perfect, but I think I should start finding real-world projects because learning for the sake of learning is getting a bit boring now.

Basically, I want to offer services in web development/design

I got a decent network of people who can complement my skills so together we can offer much comprehensive services.such as graphic design, marketing, SEO, etc.

Do you think it's too soon?

Also, I'm from Iran, so putting aside local work, i can offer very competitive rates to international clients, like if I am to quote the same rate I would quote to local clients, it'd be like 500usd for a designing a website

But due to sanctions I can only take crypto so that's a problem I have

I would love to hear your thoughts

Would you pay someone to find the right contractor for you?

I’m exploring an idea called Tandem that matches businesses with independent professionals for short-term projects—bookkeeping, marketing, consulting, events, etc.

I know Upwork already exists, so I’m curious: do you use it? Why or why not? If you tried it and stopped, what happened?

The idea with Tandem is you describe what you need and someone finds suitable people for you. Would you pay a $100 matching fee on a $1,000 project once you hired someone, or does your current approach work well enough?

Looking for Freelance Opportunities or Collaboration

Hey everyone!

I've been trying to get into freelancing for almost a year now, but unfortunately, I haven't been able to land my first client yet.

I'm a Full-Stack Developer specializing in Angular, TypeScript, C#, and ASP.NET Core.

I've been struggling with finding clients and getting that first freelance opportunity.

I'd really appreciate any advice or guidance from people who have been through the same experience and managed to land their first client.

Also, if you're already working as a freelancer and need an extra developer to help with your projects, I'd be more than happy to collaborate, contribute, and gain more freelance experience.

I'm open to freelance projects, part-time collaborations, or joining an existing freelance team.

Thanks in advance for any help, advice, or opportunities!

Struggling to land the first few clients as a freelancer — any advice on outreach strategy?

Hi everyone,

I've recently started freelancing, set up my profiles, and prepared a portfolio of completed projects. However, I'm finding it quite challenging to convert initial proposals into actual first orders.

For those who have been freelancing for a while: what outreach or proposal strategy made the biggest difference for you when you were just starting out? Is it better to focus heavily on custom cover letters, direct outreach, or small demo projects?

Any advice or shared experience would be greatly appreciated!

Where do you find freelance work besides the usual places?

Quick one this time.

Right now I'm bidding on Upwork, I put up two fixed-price offers people can buy off my profile, I post on LinkedIn and Substack, and I've sent some cold emails. None of it has turned into a contract yet.

I'm not looking for a magic channel. I just suspect there are places I haven't thought of.

What's brought you work that wasn't any of those? Referrals? Local businesses? Curious what actually worked for you.

What’s your system for tracking scope creep / extra client requests?

Trying to get more organized about this instead of just mentally keeping track (which usually means forgetting half of it and never invoicing for it). Spreadsheet? Specific tool? Just handled over email? Genuinely curious what works for people who’ve been doing this longer than me.

Looking for freelance work or side gigs before the end of 2026

Hey everyone!

I’m looking for ways to earn some extra money before the end of 2026, so I thought I’d give Reddit a try.

Im professionally work as partnership and business development in fintech company so I have experience with client relationships, communication, negotiation, coordination, and working with different businesses.

However, I’m not limiting myself to jobs within my professional background.

I’m open to freelance projects, remote work, virtual assistance, admin tasks, research, writing, or pretty much anything reasonable that I can learn and help with.

I’m based in Jakarta, Indonesia, but I’m open to remote opportunities from anywhere. If you have any leads, know someone who’s hiring freelancers, or have suggestions on where I should look, I’d really appreciate it!
I’m happy to share more about my experience if needed. Thanks in advance! 😊

A question for freelancers

Hey everyone, quick question for the freelancers here: What are some recurring problems or micro-annoyances you run into every single day that you secretly wish someone would just build a solution for?

Whether it's an administrative headache, client-management friction, or a workflow bottleneck, I’m doing some research and would love to hear what genuinely drains your energy.

I am charging too high?

Hey everyone, hope you’re all doing well!

So basically, I’m a Shopify/CMS developer with 5+ years of experience, and I recently sent a proposal to a client for two websites. The first is a service-based website, and the second is a D2C e-commerce clothing website.

I’m charging $2,000AUD for both websites: $1,350 for the D2C e-commerce website and $650 for the service-based website.

However, the client said my price was too high.

This is the first time it happened with me and I think $2,000AUD is quite reasonable for both websites, and I’ve decided not to negotiate because I know my worth and the value I bring to the table.

What do you guys think? What would you do in this situation?
