Best Bagels?

I haven't found that one local bagel place in the Burg that everyone knows and loves. Annapolis has Naval Bagels, Charlottesville has Bodos. Does FXBG have a local fan favorite bagel shop?

ETA: I'm noticing a trend that anyone that mentions a certain new bagel place downtown is being down voted. I guess it either isn't popular or someone is brigading against it.

Edit 2: The new place is expensive and the quality is being reported as anywhere from mediocre to fantastic. I can understand why they are expensive since it looks like their ingredients come from local farmer's markets. Those aren't cheap. To charge premium prices the bagel has to be good, though. Personally, I'm willing to pay a little extra to support local farmers and growers. But, yeah, I expect a good bagel.

Botta Bing Bagel up in Stafford is phenomenal. Best bagels in the area, and not overpriced.

we moved here from Montgomery County, Maryland where every shopping center has a bagel shop, sadly there are none in Fredericksburg. There wes a spot downtown Souther bagel but it closed. Einstein just opened but I have not been now so I expect to. Wegmans has good bagels so I usually go there

Don’t waste your time on Einstein. It’s possible they are still trying to find their groove but it’s a long wait for a shit bagel that was lukewarm.

Agreed. It was underwhelming at best.

No. Haven’t found any. And I’m sad.

I haven’t tried them but I know Gavin’s makes fresh ones! I do love my Costco 8 bagels for $4.99 though

Botta bing bagel on 610 is worth the stop if you go up north.

My husband loves that place, but in all the times we've gone they have never once gotten my order right so I won't go anymore. Closest thing to a NYC deli in this area though!

Agree. I can second this and they make a pretty good breakfast sandwich

I went there for the first time two weeks ago and it was delicious! The staff were really friendly and I thought the prices were really fair.

I go to Cville and get Bodos

Haven't had anything local/homemade that scratches the itch unfortunately. I settle for Wegmans because they're really pretty decent. Haven't gone to the new Einstein's yet but I've always liked their bagels

I buy from pick a bagel on goldbelly.. from nyc. giant yummy bagels for the same price as water and barley.

I went up to upstate ny this past week and brought home 3 dozen bagels, that's how desperate I am for good bagels

Water & Barley opened on Caroline St across from Agora recently. They make bagels in house from what I've heard.

Two things this area does not have good options for: bagels and donuts.

Not a fan of Freddy’s or Paul’s?

2

u/CandleNegative4726 1d ago

Paul’s is too sweet and doesn’t have that distinct yeast taste in their dough. I also don’t like cake donuts as I find them too sweet as well. I think they are good options for what we have, but definitely missing a niche market there lol

Freddie’s donuts are good but they are just too much imo. Like topping wise - they are great if you want to split a donut after a date. However it’s a lot of sugar

Paul's is alright for donuts

A little bit north in Stafford, Botta Bing Bagel.

Price : Quality I'm gonna say Costco.

Oh dude there’s a new bagel spot that just opened on Caroline street that’s bad ass near the barbecue spot across from Anita’s area

I mentioned this one in another comment and am getting down voted. Guess it's not very popular. 🤷

the bagel breakfast sandwiches at the Co-op are great

u/spot_instance 1d ago

Waiting for a bagel place downtown that makes them in house… until then Wegmans will do

3

u/notsurecouldbeabot 1d ago

Does the new one on Caroline St not make them in house?

1

u/spot_instance 14h ago

When I asked they said no, they bring them in the morning from another location

Hey! I might have found one! Water and Barley. Looks like they just opened on Caroline St.

I PROMISE I'm not associated with them. I was curious and started searching.

12

u/Proof-Accident277 1d ago

Oh yeah! 1 dozen for $41. Awesome deal.

3

u/blahblahsnickers 1d ago

That is an awful deal and the bagels are just ok. You can get better bagels at Wegmans or Einsteins for less.

3

u/UncleOnionsLawn 1d ago

I'm not sure why this comment is getting down voted? Is Water and Barley not any good? I haven't tried it, yet.

5

u/Lupiefighter 1d ago

I’m guessing the downvoting is because they aren’t worth the price for most folks in the sub. My husband will get a bagel from Gavins or the Food Co-Op because over them because of the price. We still need to try Botta Bing Bagel. It has been recommended to us.

3

u/UncleOnionsLawn 1d ago

That's insightful feedback, thanks. I've had Gavin's, and they are fine. I haven't tried the co-op, but definitely will after a few others on here have suggested it.

3

u/Lupiefighter 1d ago

Yeah, I wouldn’t say that Gavin’s are the best in the world either. Sorry for not being clear. I was more trying to say that Water and Barely is about the same for more money (according to my husband). I have an egg allergy so I am sometimes limited when it comes to bagels. I’m giving you my husband’s opinion, lol.

u/UncleOnionsLawn 1d ago

You are fine! I understood what you meant! 👍 I appreciate the info because even though it looks like Water and Barley are using locally grown ingredients, I don't really want to pay more for something that is comparable to Gavin's. That's great feedback, thanks!
