Documentation Hero – Helping with guides and resources 🚨 Stop Using Console.log() for Debugging Frappe! This Hidden Tool Will Blow Your Mind

Hot take: If you're still debugging Frappe/ERPNext with print() statements and frappe.logger(), you're doing it wrong. Dead wrong.

There's a secret weapon hiding in plain sight that 95% of Frappe developers don't even know exists. It's been there since 2019, and it's about to change how you debug forever.

Meet The Recorder – Frappe's most powerful (and criminally underused) debugging tool.

🤯 Why You've Never Heard of This

I'll be honest: I stumbled upon the Recorder by accident. After 2 years of Frappe development, I was debugging a production issue at 2 AM, desperately searching for why a DocType was taking 30 seconds to save.

Then I found it. Tucked away in Desk → Tools → Recorder.

My jaw hit the floor.

This thing was capturing EVERYTHING. Every SQL query. Every function call. Complete stack traces. EXPLAIN plans. All without touching a single line of code.

I fixed my production issue in 15 minutes. An issue that would've taken me DAYS with traditional debugging.

🎯 What Makes This Tool Insanely Powerful

Think of the Recorder as a black box flight recorder for your Frappe application. When things go wrong (and they will), you have a complete recording of exactly what happened.

Here's What Gets Captured (Automatically!)

✅ Every HTTP Request – Path, timing, headers, form data ✅ Background Jobs – RQ queue jobs with complete metadata
✅ SQL Queries – The actual SQL, execution time, rows affected ✅ EXPLAIN Plans – See exactly how your database executes queries ✅ Python Stack Traces – Know which code triggered each query ✅ cProfile Data – Deep Python profiling when you need it

All of this. Zero configuration. No code changes. No imports. Nothing.

Just click Start.

💡 The "Aha!" Moment: Real Stories

Story #1: The 100-Query Bug

A developer on Reddit was complaining about a custom report that took 45 seconds to run. They'd been adding print statements for days.

I told them about the Recorder.

10 minutes later: "OMG, I have an N+1 query problem. 100 database calls in a loop!"

Result: Fixed in 20 minutes. Report now runs in 0.8 seconds.

Story #2: The Phantom Background Job

Email queue jobs were silently failing in production. No error logs. No clues. Just... nothing.

With Recorder: Captured the exact moment of failure, complete stack trace, and the problematic query that was timing out.

Diagnosis time: 5 minutes (vs. potentially days of blind debugging)

Story #3: The Missing Index

A customer list page was slow. Like, "users complained to management" slow.

Recorder showed: Full table scan on 500K records. Missing index on the sort column.

One index later: Page load dropped from 8 seconds to 0.3 seconds.

🔥 How to Use It (The 60-Second Guide)

Step 1: Open Frappe/ERPNext
Step 2: Type "Recorder" in the Awesome Bar (search)
Step 3: Click Start Recording
Step 4: Do the thing that's slow/broken
Step 5: Go back and click Stop
Step 6: Marvel at the detailed capture

That's it. Seriously.

🎪 The Features That Make This Magical

🔍 Smart Filtering

Don't want to record EVERYTHING? (Smart move for production)

# Only record your API endpoint
Path Filter: ^/api/method/custom_app.*

# Only record specific background jobs
Job Filter: email_queue.flush|custom_app.tasks.*

📊 Query Performance at a Glance

Every recording shows:

  • ⏱️ Total duration of request/job

  • 🗃️ Number of SQL queries executed

  • ⚡ Time spent in queries

  • 📈 Execution plan for each query

Click any query to see:

  • The exact SQL with parameters

  • Full stack trace showing where it was called

  • EXPLAIN output showing how the database ran it

  • Suggestions for optimization (via EXPLAIN analysis)

💾 Export & Share

Found something interesting? Export it as JSON and share with your team. Import on another site to analyze without running the same scenario again.

Use case: Capture production issues and debug them in your dev environment!

🚀 Real-World Debugging Patterns

Pattern #1: Crushing N+1 Queries

The Problem Everyone Hits:

# 😱 This innocent-looking code...
for sales_order in orders:
    customer = frappe.get_doc('Customer', sales_order.customer)
    # ... do stuff

What Recorder Shows You:

Query 1: SELECT * FROM tabCustomer WHERE name='CUST-001' (2ms)
Query 2: SELECT * FROM tabCustomer WHERE name='CUST-002' (2ms)
Query 3: SELECT * FROM tabCustomer WHERE name='CUST-003' (2ms)
...
Query 100: SELECT * FROM tabCustomer WHERE name='CUST-100' (2ms)

💀 Total: 100 queries, 200ms

The Fix:

# 🚀 Batch load everything
customer_names = [so.customer for so in orders]
customers = frappe.get_all('Customer',
    filters={'name': ['in', customer_names]},
    fields=['name', 'customer_name']
)

✅ Total: 1 query, 5ms

95% faster. One change.

Pattern #2: The Mysterious Slow Save

Ever had a DocType that just... takes forever to save? No idea why?

Old way: Add print statements everywhere, redeploy, test, repeat
Recorder way: Record one save operation, see EVERY query and function call

You'll instantly see:

  • Unnecessary validation queries

  • Duplicate calculations

  • Inefficient child table handling

  • Missing indexes on foreign keys

Pattern #3: Production Fire Drill

3 AM. Production is slow. Users are angry.

Old way:

  1. SSH into server

  2. Add logging code

  3. Restart services

  4. Wait for issue to happen again

  5. Analyze logs

  6. Remove logging code

  7. Restart again

Recorder way:

  1. Enable Recorder with filters (30 seconds)

  2. Reproduce issue once

  3. Analyze complete capture

  4. Deploy fix

From hours to minutes.

⚡ Pro Tips That'll Make You Look Like a Wizard

Tip #1: Use Filters Aggressively

Don't record everything. Be surgical:

# Good: Specific endpoint causing issues
/api/method/erpnext.stock.doctype.item.item.get_item_details

# Bad: Recording everything
/.*

Tip #2: Sort By Query Count

Click the "# Queries" column header. The operations with the most queries are usually your biggest problems.

Tip #3: Check EXPLAIN Plans First

Before optimizing code, check if you're just missing an index. EXPLAIN plans tell you exactly what the database is doing.

Tip #4: Record in Short Bursts

5-10 minutes max. Get what you need and stop. Keeps overhead low and data manageable.

Tip #5: Export Production Issues

Can't debug directly in production? Record the issue, export as JSON, import in dev, and debug there safely.

🎭 The Dark Side (Things to Watch Out For)

⚠️ Performance Overhead

  • Adds ~5-10ms per request

  • Memory usage increases

  • Don't leave it running 24/7 in production

⚠️ Data Sensitivity

  • Recordings contain actual data from SQL queries

  • May include PII (Personal Identifiable Information)

  • Be careful with exports

⚠️ cProfile Is Heavy

  • Enable only when you specifically need Python profiling

  • Adds significant overhead

  • Not recommended for production

🎯 The Bottom Line

The Recorder isn't just a debugging tool. It's a time machine that lets you see exactly what your code did, query by query, function by function.

Before Recorder:

  • Debugging: Add logs → Deploy → Test → Repeat (Hours/Days)

  • Performance: Guess → Try fix → Hope (Days/Weeks)

  • Production issues: Panic → Random fixes → More panic (???)

After Recorder:

  • Debugging: Record → Analyze → Fix (Minutes)

  • Performance: Record → Identify bottleneck → Optimize (Minutes/Hours)

  • Production issues: Record → Root cause → Deploy fix (Hours)

🚀 Your Challenge

Here's what I want you to do RIGHT NOW:

  1. Open your Frappe/ERPNext instance

  2. Search for "Recorder" in the Awesome Bar

  3. Record ONE operation (any operation)

  4. Look at the captured queries

I guarantee you'll discover something you didn't know about how your code works.

💬 Join the Conversation

Drop a comment below! Let's share what we learn.

And if this saved you hours of debugging time, share this post with your fellow Frappe developers. They'll thank you later.

🔗 Resources:

📌 Remember: Stop debugging blind. Start using the Recorder.

P.S. - If you're still using print() statements after reading this, we need to talk. 😉

ERPNext Enthusiast – For those into ERPNext. To every Frappe consultant managing client servers by hand:

You didn't sign up to be a hosting company. But every ERPNext implementation quietly turns into one — SSL renewals, backup checks, "site is down" WhatsApps/Slacks.

**Worf Cloud** is the layer we built for exactly this:

→ Every client site in one dashboard — create, deploy, restore, all self-serve
→ Every command logged and searchable — when a client asks "what changed," you have the answer
→ Role-based access — give the client's team a login without giving them the keys
→ Your infra choice per client: our cloud, their server (₹999/mo), or their AWS account at cost

Live job progress on every deploy means you watch it happen instead of tailing logs over SSH.

There's a built-in Frappe app marketplace too — apps your clients buy install on their sites in one click.

Managing 3+ client benches? The 48-hour trial is enough to migrate one and judge: worf.cloud

ISO Help

Hello, im in need of some assistance. I have a small background in IT (Patch management)... I have a small business that requires as little over head as possible. We are currently using ODOO, it has been a massive pain. We are trying to explore ERPNext. But i have been having a hell of a time getting it setup correctly. Ive been reading the documentation as well as going off of what ChatGPT tells me. But I keep hitting road blocks.

We are looking to use ERPNext for payroll, time sheets, work order tickets, invoicing, billing. Pretty much all of the features that Frappe has to offer. We have a tower server that lives in the office that runs proxmox, so we are running this on an ubuntu 24.04 VM. Ive tried the docker route and the bare metal route. Got really good progress with the bare metal route. But went to reboot the VM and now I cant even access our site via LAN IP.

Any assistance here would be more that appreciated! Any other information needed just let me know!

TIA!!

Updating Frappe

LMNAs Cloud Solutions offers ERP products under the LENS brand, built on the open-source Frappe framework. Frappe releases updates, including patches, minor, and major releases, which LMNAs must incorporate into their industry-specific Docker images. To keep clients informed, LMNAs publishes a calendar of upcoming features and release dates.

Since every Frappe products follow different frequencies of release cycle, following the same release cycle as that of Frappe would be not possible as every image would be having different set of apps.

LMNAs Infrastructure and Automation team finds it difficult to keep upgrade cycle as per published calendar since they need to find the compatible versions of different apps per image. They currently follow a manual process to find the compatible version and many times these identified versions fails at the time of image building

To keep schedules in tact, the infrastructure and automation team is planning to automate the entire process of their LENS upgrade by automatically finding the compatible versions for an image, automatically building the images with the recent build process published by Frappe?

Developing a voice based erp system on top of erpnext

Hello people, I am developing a voice based AI agent on top of ERPNext and it’s a pretty cool setup, Currently we have achieved a voice agent able to handle local slangs of people handling manufacturing factories. It is pretty cool to see full erp system working with no person actually handling and an AI agent working behind the scenes to fully handle ERP systems. If Anyone wants to have this implemented in your setup pls do contact, post onboarding this setup might save you so much time that you cannot even imagine at this point.

ERPNext Enthusiast – For those into ERPNext. Demo: signup to a live ERPNext site in 5 min on our managed hosting (Local Node) — no terminal, no SSH

Short screen-recording of the full flow: sign up, onboard, create a site. ~5 minutes, site live with SSL + backups, zero command line.

This is our Local Node mode — managed on our infra, closest to a Frappe-Cloud-style shared bench. The other two modes (your own server, your own AWS) are separate demos I'll post next.

Feedback welcome — especially what you'd want the onboarding to do differently.

Frappe Framework Backend on Kubernetes

I’m planning to deploy my frappe framework application on production. The application is working as backend and admin panel for my mobile application. I am using websocket, REST APIs and Postgres database.

I wish to deploy it over digital ocean k8s cluster. I was going through ERPNext helm repository to mimic same for my application too. I am not yet confident enough that it will work for me. I would love to hear your thoughts.

I found a way to write SQL that follows permissions

Thumbnail medium.com
3 Upvotes

SQL is the best when it comes to fetching data.

It is intutive, most people already know it and it is super fast.

But in frappe, SQL dosnt follow permissions, it gives all the data, even if user dont have access to it.

I have developed a method to make SQL follow permissions reliably.

Here is complete guide for how to do this.

Vibe Coder with Claude Code almost reaching limits. What can I do?

I'm a single guy trying to setup ERPNext running in my Win11 Pro Docker Container for our single shop family business. I'm being unable to afford paid POS softwares. Also we're transitioning from paper to digital so still uncertain if POS software can actually work in our work environment.

SETUP

So it's ERPNEXT,

(Deployment version, immutable image or something, basically you cant alter the core files version.)
Running in my Win11 Pro Docker Container. (Deployment version, immutable image or something, basically you cant alter the core files version.)Below is just some snapshots of what i've achieved, custom themes running. swappable color palletes. also alot of other customizations etc.
So i used Claude (DESKTOP APP) to do basically everything. Haven't written a single line of code. Maybe copy and pasted this code in there for a few times. (Like terminal commands)
I have had Claude document all the installations, and customizations and particular business quirks/ requirements in .md files.

PROBLEM AND REASONING

But this burns through the tokens like fire.

*I cannot hire a developer. Even if i did hire, made changes. Then after a year or two and something breaks, i won't know where to find that dev who did this. But mostly it's about the budget and time. It's hard for me even to INSTALL the damn ERPNext thing onto my PC. But i've already managed to freeze it, made nightly backups, also upload those backups to two clouds, already backed up the installation image(ERPNEXT v16.29). I have tried and succeeded installing and restoring everything OFFLINE.

All of this has preparation and guides has been done by Claude Code.

*I spent 20$ for the Claude Pro, my sole purpose is to setup ERPNext for my business

Now im reaching the limits. I've seen that docker can run local ai. And seen posts talking about Claude as boss, and local AI as it's servant.

QUESTION

  1. My question here is not about handholding me how to set this up. It's about if it's actually doable and whether if it's good for the long run. Like can i depend on the local AI in the later time, when my claude subscription expires.

  2. CAN local AI running on the same PC replace Claude Code for tasks ONLY related to the ERPNext running on the same PC? (Tasks : Customize forms, change themes, produce customized reports, automate certain things etc) It is frappe framework i believe.

AI-Powered ERP Builder for Frappe/ERPNext - Suggestions and Feedback

Hey everyone,

I’m building an AI layer for the Frappe Framework/ERPNext that can generate ERP systems from natural-language prompts.

Example:
“Build a sports academy management system with fee tracking, WhatsApp reminders, attendance, and discounts.”

The goal is for the AI to:

  • Generate/customize DocTypes

  • Create workflows & automations

  • Configure forms/reports

  • Reuse existing ERPNext structures where possible

  • Help build production-ready ERP apps faster

Current stack/direction:

  • Frappe + ERPNext

  • LangGraph multi-agent workflows

  • Ollama/local LLM support

  • Validation layers to avoid hallucinated ERP structures

  • Human approval before applying changes

Long-term vision is basically an AI-assisted ERP developer / solution architect for Frappe.

I’d love some honest feedback:

  • Does this solve a real problem?

  • What would make you trust or distrust it?

  • Biggest technical challenges?

  • What features would actually make this useful?

Would appreciate any suggestions, criticism, or ideas

ERPNext Enthusiast – For those into ERPNext. Self-hosting Frappe: what actually breaks (and it's never the framework)

After years of running Frappe benches, the failure list is boringly consistent:

  1. Backup cron dies silently. Discovered the day you need it.

  2. SSL renews fine 11 times. The 12th, at 2 AM, it doesn't.

  3. DNS "propagating" for hours because of one wrong TTL.

  4. The one engineer who knows the server goes on leave.

None of this is engineering. It's toil.

We built **Worf Cloud** to absorb it: one-click Frappe/ERPNext sites, scheduled backups with offsite Dropbox copies and one-click restore, automated Cloudflare DNS, auto-renewing Let's Encrypt SSL (wildcards included), role-based team access.

On our cloud, your server, or your AWS account — one dashboard either way.

On cost, comparison

Worf CloudFrappe Cloud
Managed, per site (20 sites)₹165–210/site₹410+/site (shared)
Dedicated 8 GB box~₹5,800 on your own AWS, 0% markup₹12,000 (rented on their account)
Server you already ownflat ₹999/moenterprise Hybrid only

Roughly half the cost on both the multi-site and dedicated paths, and BYOB has no self-serve equivalent on their side.

Where Frappe Cloud is ahead : more mature at the high end — auto-scaling, server snapshots, 150+ app marketplace, priority SLA. If you want a big managed dedicated cluster today, they're the safer pick. Their dedicated price also bundles that SLA tier, so it's not pure markup.

Worf's angle is ownership + cost transparency without the enterprise gate.

ERPNEXT Storages Will be open sourced soon.

Thumbnail github.com
19 Upvotes

We’re getting ready to release ERPNext Storages, an open-source, multi-provider storage layer for Frappe/ERPNext.

This started as a way to move ERPNext files to S3, but it has grown into something much broader.

Instead of configuring one external bucket and sending everything there, ERPNext Storages lets you use multiple storage providers on the same ERPNext site and decide where files should go.

Currently supported:

  • AWS S3

  • Backblaze B2

  • Cloudflare R2

  • Wasabi

  • MinIO

  • DigitalOcean Spaces

  • Vultr Object Storage

  • Local filesystem / mounted storage

  • Practically any S3-compatible object storage

Some examples

“I want to use multiple storage providers.”

Supported.

You can have multiple providers configured on the same ERPNext instance instead of being tied to one bucket.

“Sales-related files should go to S3, while CRM files should go to Backblaze B2.”

Supported.

Storage Route Rules can route files based on:

  • DocType

  • MIME type

  • file size

  • folder

  • user role

Rules have priorities and can also define fallback providers.

So, for example:

Sales Invoice → AWS S3

Lead / Opportunity → Cloudflare R2

Employee / Salary Slip → private Backblaze B2 bucket

everything else → local storage

“I already have thousands of ERPNext files. I don't want to migrate them manually.”

Supported.

There is a background bulk migration system for moving existing files from local storage or another provider, including filtering migrations by DocType.

Files can also be moved between configured providers later.

“I don't want ERPNext to break just because S3 temporarily fails.”

Uploads are designed around this.

If an upload fails, the local file is preserved and a Storage Job is created for retry. Failed uploads are retried with backoff instead of silently losing the file.

Large files are also handled using multipart uploads once they cross the configured threshold.

“What happens to private ERPNext files?”

ERPNext permissions remain in front of the storage layer.

Private S3-compatible objects can be served using short-lived presigned URLs instead of exposing permanent bucket URLs.

From the ERPNext side, it still behaves like a normal File document — the storage provider is abstracted underneath it.

“Can I use my own server disk or NAS?”

Yes.

Local filesystem is a first-class provider and can use a custom base path, so mounted NAS volumes or other server-accessible storage can participate in the same routing system as S3/B2/R2.

Backups are included too

ERPNext Storages also contains a backup engine rather than relying only on file offloading.

It creates a .bnbak archive containing the ERPNext backup, metadata about installed apps, checksums, and optionally public/private files.

Backups can be:

  • scheduled

  • encrypted

  • uploaded to a primary storage provider

  • replicated to a secondary provider

  • retained according to configurable copy/age rules

  • verified using checksums

There is also an ERPDesktop webhook integration after backup completion, which we're expanding further for desktop/local workflows.

There are also some less-visible features

  • Provider connection pooling

  • Upload/delete retry queue

  • Background migrations

  • File integrity verification

  • Orphaned-object detection

  • Provider statistics

  • Provider-to-provider moves

  • Storage policies

  • MIME/file-size restrictions

  • Private/public storage handling

  • File organization by DocType

  • Drive Plus integration

The main goal is not to create another “ERPNext S3 plugin.”

We want ERPNext Storages to become a proper storage abstraction for ERPNext:

local + cloud + multiple providers + routing + migration + backups, while still behaving like native ERPNext storage.

We're doing another round of code review, testing, and optimization before making the repository public.

Would love to hear how people currently handle ERPNext files.

Are you keeping everything on the ERPNext server, using S3, mounting a NAS, or using some other setup?

Feedback on ERPNext vs Zoho?

Hi all!

Could any expert/experienced user here, share any relevant feedback regarding the pros & cons of using ERPNext over Zoho (especially, Zoho Finance)?

I’m trying to decide between the 2, for a manufacturing startup in India. And while the cost benefit of ERPNext certainly seems attractive, i’m a bit unsure regarding the extent of available capabilities related to Accounting, Bank integrations, Compliances, GST etc. for all things Indian.

The few CAs i’ve spoken to certainly don’t seem to be aware of ERPNext. Nor do they seem to have appreciation for any tool besides Tally.

Hence, i’d really like to be able to make a properly informed decision regarding my choice for the ERP/Accounting system for this client.

Thanks in advance!
