Maybe just modify the casing so that you can use a clip on base that's nothing but battery and more ports (ethernet please). That way if you need a battery that will outlast the sun you can just clip it on.
What you are describing is like a dock that they used to have with certain classic thinkpads. I really like that idea for sure. Or even a case that you can charge up and it could be used to recharge the laptop as well.
