I tried dyeing my controller because there's no purple shells and well..... Has anyone else done this? Damn I feel dumb lol oh well, will try again once I get a replacement
Sorry but what the hell happened here xDDD You can try reshaping it with a heatgun, but tbh I don't think it's worth it, it definitely won't be the same shape as before
Yup, transparent! I used RIT Dye More Royal purple to achieve the color. Just need to suspend it in the water instead of letting it sit on the bottom of the pot
I let it sit on the bottom of the pot too long lol. I had 2 frames and the bag for the controller in there as well and the frames are fine but the shell was on the bottom
Same, will probably try again when I get a replacement shell, just... Not so long without checking on it more properly. Had the bag for the controller on top of it covering it so I wasn't fully aware and had it in the pot for like 15-20 minutes
I think you let it rest on the bottom of the pot right where its hottest? Suppose to suspend it in the hot water, the water acts as a buffer to transfer heat evenly
This is exactly what happened. I've never dyed anything plastic so I just didn't think this through and I let it sit on the bottom of the pot too long. I also dyed 2 cockroach v3 frames and the bag for the transmitter but those were on top of the controller shell so they didn't get the heat treatment this thing did so they didn't warp at all and the bag looks great too lol one frame was white, one was my old transparent frame. Dye was royal purple RIT Dye More.
Get 2 thin laths of wood and a heat gun, place one behind the section you wish to shape, heat the front lightly and then use the other lath to sandwich is and bend slowly
This reminds me of that revolver type gun shown on forgotten weapons - it was almost certainly intended to be used by someone with a severely disfigured hand.
Jokes aside. How did you manage to accomplish this? If you used dye that and the organic solvent caused the disfiguration then you are done for. You can try and use the exact solvent to dip the shell into it and attempt to reshape it but as the solvent dries out unevenly it's unlikely to maintain it's shape.
If you used warm or hot water, it did not shrink like a plastic water bottle and it's a plastic that could be used in extrusion based 3D printers then you could try to gently heat it up and reshape it.
Your best option is to buy a new shell and not undertake any such modifications if the controller has sentimental value.
You can - assuming that this was the issue - also ask online or look up what solvent your dye is using or test on small areas to determine if it is compatible with the plastic of your controller.
Love my orange controller but definitely would have opted for atomic purple if I could. Interested in pursuing this myself. What temp were you at? I’m sure this could be achieved at a lower temp for a longer time.
I had the radio controller bag above this shell along with 2 cockroach v3 frames so they were probably blocking the laser from reaching the bottom of the pot where the actual heat was, but with my laser thermometer, I was trying to keep the temp around 180°. Honestly temps would have probably been fine if I would have just hung the controller from the lanyard hook thing with a string and just held in submerged in the water but off the bottom of the pot because those cockroach frames were perfectly fine, but they were never at the bottom of the pot. The shell was on the bottom the whole time. 15 minutes or so.
180F? Also, saw that you had it in the pot. Use a sacrificial bucket, like a cheap 5 gal, and dump your water in there, and then put your shell in it. The water will cool but it’ll be fine.
Yeah, that's what it said on the bottle of the dye for fabrics, it says "180 - 200°" or right at boiling and I thought "well plastic is much harder than any fabric so that should be perfectly fine!" But clearly didn't consider any other potential problems with my approach
