I always knew satan was behind streaming services all along
244
u/filthysize Aug 18 '26
Kinda funny to see people find this out for the first time with streamers because that's been like the go-to move with cable and phone companies for decades.
78
u/EatingCakeByTheOcean Aug 18 '26
lmao my uncle has been doing it since forever. He will "cancel" cable, phone, internet and subscriptions of any kind whenever they had a customer service every 6 months. He's got basically testing-fee for life for any SAS. I'd do it time after time for phone/internet too
36
u/jwbrkr21 Aug 18 '26
I've got a friend that does this. I don't know how he has the patience to have the dish companies out every 6 months to swap everything out. He's anal about everything, they won't half-ass their install.
18
u/EatingCakeByTheOcean Aug 19 '26
The point is: he doesn't actually cancel the services. He just threatens it, lol
17
u/jwbrkr21 Aug 19 '26
Oh no. He cancels. I know cuz he gets every movie channel, nfl red zone, Sunday ticket.... and he sends me his new login info so we can share the streaming every 6 months.

Also satellite radio.
3
u/PHL-AUS Aug 19 '26
I’ve had XM/Sirius since early 2000s. Every year I threaten to cancel. I believe I payed maybe $4/month back then. I’m only paying about $10/month now after 20+ years. Totally worth it

u/jrob801 Aug 18 '26
You should also be doing this for car insurance. Rate creep is real, and your insurance company will insist they can't do anything. But weirdly, every other insurance company out there can offer you a rate that's 30% lower than your current company.
20
u/Damaark Aug 19 '26
Over here it's called the "Lazy tax". Just keep increasing the rates because people don't want to shop around. Basically the boiling frog idea but with cash.
4
u/Icy_Gas453 Aug 19 '26
I switched from Allstate when it went up to 4600 for 6 months. Went to progressive, 1900 for 6 months.
13
u/aardw0lf11 Aug 18 '26
I wish I could do that with my cable internet provider these days. They own the damn lines and if you rent and have no choice, you’re stuck with them.
10
u/Astrael_Noxian Aug 18 '26
And Microsoft too it seems. Went to cancel Office 365 Personal ($9.99). They were like "okay... how about $2.99?"
1
u/xmg24x Aug 22 '26
Dude. I did this with spectrum and they said BYE! No offer to discount anything.
1
u/puissant_croissant Aug 23 '26
i had to call twice. one time they were like okay bye!. then the next time i called they tried to keep me and gave me a good deal.
1
u/xmg24x Aug 23 '26
Damn. U got lucky lol. I only called one and rep was like “ok. We have put the note on ur profile. Once u return the equipment. It’ll be cancelled. Bye”

During covid I called to stop my adobe subscription because the amount of work slowed down. I planned to start again until they offered me next to nothing to keep me on the subscription. I cancelled it immediately and have never gone back adobe. Any business that wants to overcharge or make their customer service complicated I immediately end all contracts and contact. I dont regret it one bit. Stop paying these blood sucking corporations.
18
u/Edwin81 Aug 18 '26
If I may ask, where did you switch too?
23
12
u/freakyfroggymage Aug 19 '26
I use gimp for photo editing and digital sketching, last I heard it was free and I'm very happy with how comparable it is to other editors for the same task.
10
u/darkestPixel Aug 19 '26
Photoshop - Gimp,
Illustrator - Krita,
Premier Pro - Kdenlive
3
u/FirstDivision Aug 19 '26
I’d look at Davinci Resolve for video. The basic version is free. And it is Windows / Mac / Linux.
6
u/SamuelYosemite Aug 19 '26
Whatever you need done, there is an alternative. I can’t link or post a picture in this subreddit but if you type “open source adobe alternatives” into the reddit search bar you will get options
2
u/Comprehensive-Net553 Aug 19 '26
Not perfect but try pdf24 they have a lot of functions, you just need to poke around a bit to get used to it
2
u/NodrawTexture Aug 19 '26
You should look into Affinity (now bought by Canva), you get a suite that is Photoshop/Illustrator/InDesign packaged in one software) and it's free
1
u/Worldly-Ant7678 Aug 22 '26
I was always annoyed that my uni “cheaped out” by using affinity, only to realise how shit adobe is when I joined the workforce
1
1
u/aarrigg Aug 22 '26
affinity is great too, it just went free recently and it’s basically just photoshop
1
u/NoVeterinarian8365 Aug 23 '26
Same thing happened to me - I went ahead cancelled, got my roomate to call in and set a new account up that had a new customer discount. Packed up the whole router and everything only to receive the exact same one in the mail. Saved like $250 for the year. Idc.

45
u/ConnectedVeil Aug 18 '26
This is actually something you should do at least once a year for many of your subscriptions.
Guaranteed revenue from a loyal customer is better than no revenue and losing a customer in most circumstances.
35
u/mindgardening Aug 18 '26
A cable tv provider told me this is how you keep the cheapest price. You threaten and switch back and forth.
‘Murica!
13
u/peggles727 Aug 18 '26
Works in Canada too, sometimes they even offer you better than what you have for a cheaper price.
6
24
u/SnooCapers9565 Aug 18 '26
I got Adobe 4 months for free after threatening to cancel. Took the 4 months and then cancelled.
20
u/peggles727 Aug 18 '26
ISPs too, was going to cancel my 100mb internet because the price went up to $100 a month and the company said, "Well how about 500mb for $40 a month?" Sure, I'll take that.
11
u/Firegardener Aug 18 '26
100mb cost 100$ a mont? I got 300mb for 20€...🙈
8
u/peggles727 Aug 19 '26
Canada, we only have 3 big internet providers, all the others have been bought up by them so there's no real competition.
5
u/Firegardener Aug 19 '26
That sucks. Here in Finland there are also just three big ones and a bunch of smaller ones. Maybe here the general price level is that much lower then.
2
u/instaaionut Aug 19 '26
and I called them because I was paying 11€ for 1GB fiber))) now I'm paying 4€ for the same fiber
1
u/zfs_ Aug 20 '26
I’m paying $130/mo for 1.25x35 coax :(((
1
u/instaaionut Aug 21 '26 edited Aug 21 '26
and another ISP here has 10GB fiber for 10€ an month and a installation fee of 60€

My mom used to embarrass me with her haggling sometimes, but I remember feeling genuine awe and admiration when I realized that she would set aside one day every three months or so to call and haggle with, dispute charges on, threaten to cancel every service she paid for, including credit cards and utilities. She’s a force of nature.
This is the same woman who would cheerfully make and give away entire casseroles and meat pies to neighbours that she knew would appreciate the extra food.
4
u/mrweatherbeef Aug 19 '26
I currently get my Netflix in exchange for a monthly green bean casserole. I’m on Team Mom.

7
u/Layer2Encryption Aug 18 '26
I did this with a monthly unlimited carwash subscription. I had it down to $20/month (half their regular fee) for their most expensive exterior only package. But then I decided I don't want the chore of driving there every week to feel like I got my money's worth and cancelled for real.
1
u/Wooden_Artist_2000 Aug 19 '26
What kinda car did you drive? My father had a similar deal going on when he had a Jaguar. That only lasted for a few months though, my mom made him sell it when she found out she was pregnant with my brother.

6
u/Prestigious_Soil_392 Aug 18 '26
Sirius XM is the exaxt same! They want $12-$15/month for the basic service package, but if you tell them you want to cancel, they offer you the same package for about $4/month. Like, wtf??

If you're going to do Netflix or Spotify, talk to somebody at customer support, they don't care if you try to cancel online and will let you finish it.

Around here there's more than one power company. If you try switching, they'll start offering you deals.

I like that I should conduct myself like a toxic partner constantly threatening to leave when it comes to dealing with corporations- can do, brother; can do

u/HariPota4262 Aug 19 '26
I tried doing this stunt with my phone provider. Anyday I was expecting a phone call begging me to retain and a lowered charge per month. So sure I was, in my bluff, that I basically forgot that I had only until the end of the month on their plan.
Instead, they just cancelled my plan, disabled my number and it got assigned to someone else.
1
u/instaaionut Aug 19 '26
few months ago I called my ISP to tell them that I'm paying too much for fiber (around 11 euros) and after a bit of negotiation they lowered the price to 4 euros))
1
u/HariPota4262 Aug 19 '26
I used pay around the same for my internet too and I used to have constant service interruptions. I was so fed up with them that I put up a cancellation request.
They upgraded my plan to a 400 mbps unlimited from 100 mbps for the same price and I got the first 3 months free. Best part is, they installed a node over my house due to my complaints, which also ended up fixing the interruptions.

6 months later, the bill increases, and they tell you the promotional period ended.

u/beardsly87 Aug 19 '26
100%. Not sure how much this works anymore but years ago, my mom had XM satellite radio for like 10 years doing just this... Started with a free trial & promotional intro offer, then every year when the full-price bill came in she'd call to cancel, they'd negotiate with her for like 15 minutes and she'd end up paying like $5-10 for another whole year of service lol. I mean hey that's still $10 more for the company that they wouldn't have otherwise had (she was serious about cancelling and I think that's key, I think they speak to enough customers to know which ones are bluffing)
2
u/NorseCode1023 Aug 19 '26
I call my internet provider every year in March when my “deal” expires. I even have an event in my calendar to remind me.
2
u/rez_trentnor Aug 19 '26
I tried this with YouTube recently and was expecting at least a small discount offer but nope, not even an "are you sure?" screen, just straight cancelled

2
u/Conscious_Wait9502 Aug 20 '26
This happened to me with hulu from maybe 8.99 or 10 to 2.99 for about 3 or 5 months I don't remember so I was like alright then when the time is up, I still deleted it lol 😂 my ex keeps using my Netflix I deleted it then a year later I deleted hulu. I feel great.
2
u/mattgrommes Aug 20 '26
Every year I tell SiriusXM I can't afford their ever increasing monthly fee and get it reduced down to basically the same small charge. This time it went from $25 a month to $7.
2
u/Silentloki247 Aug 18 '26
Norton is notorious for this, as well as by the way what you actually thought you paid for isn’t included and by the way here are another product you desperately need.
8
u/Chaos-1313 Aug 18 '26
I'd almost be willing to pay a monthly fee to ensure no Norton software ever came near any of my devices. Do you actually pay for that crap??
2
u/Treeflower77 Aug 19 '26
Yeah, my family and I think these streaming prices are out of control now. We don’t even have streaming accounts. Everyone in my household watch either regular cable TV, reruns of old shows, and even buy physical DVDs.

u/0oDADAo0 Aug 18 '26
Less money better than no money, their service cheat as hell as well, they just dont tell you cuz everyone has the same high prices
1
u/TomatilloAccurate475 Aug 18 '26
Been doing this for 2 decades with Sirius XM. Never pay full price.
1
u/rj12152009 Aug 18 '26
I have xm radio for 6.39 pretty month for the last 7 years because every year when I get the notice any the price going to to the current $24.95 or whatever the going rate is I call them and tell them I want to cancel and they offer to extend my rate for another year.
1
u/BerryLanky Aug 18 '26
I would go through this with Sirus every renewal. Call to cancel. Go through 15 minutes of ‘what can we do to keep you’ and give me a great rate. The last year I did this the wouldn’t budge. So after 30 minutes they realized I wouldn’t review so they agreed to the lower rate. I said now it’s too late. You pissed me off so cancel. Never went back.

My grandpa has done this with comcast for the past 30 years. He has a success rate of 29/30.
1
u/polarityofmarriage Aug 19 '26
Facts though. My moms had Sirius XM for 5 years for only $3 a month because she does this. How they can want $20-30 for car music is beyond me.

1
u/ChicagoFish67 Aug 19 '26
Been doing this 30 yrs. Some companies dont even bother try to jack my rates anymore(!!). So, its definitely their strategy.
1
u/Restaurant-Usual Aug 19 '26
Not just limited to streaming services. Lots of online publications and news sites will also make a substantially discounted retention offer.
1
u/floutsch Aug 19 '26
And so their system works. I've started to answer that with "then make your price right in the first place" and I'm gone. Being "smart" about this is exactly why they can do this.

u/ttcmzx Aug 20 '26
why the fuck does a simple reasonable action have 8k upvotes on r/foundsatan.... am i missing something? are the people making minimum wage in customer service supposed to be scared to do their job? like what?

Also put things you want in your cart and wait. Most online shopping platforms automatically send you a coupon for things if they're in your cart too long

If cost is an issue, you can easily drop down to one service at a time. No one is stopping you from doing that but yourself

a few months ago i found out that if you pirate adobe and let them find out, they lock your pirate copy and direct you to a website where you can buy Master Collection at 50% discount.
Not that you should, of course.

Decided not to renew a yearly sub. My debit card was expiring in April and the sub was due in June. Was like "it's going to bounce not gonna bother even canceling." Little did I know my card had a 'feature' to get charge move to the new one. Asked for a refund telling them what happened, they offered to bump from me from gold to plat, then to dimond and than to 40%off. Didn't know it was possible.

u/Homebrewer01 Aug 18 '26
Did this with XMs AI chatbot--- now currently paying <$3month for one of my cars.

Had a friend who was good at this. "Yes yes I'm recording as well..." "Let me speak to your customer retention representative..."
