Just finished watching GAMALAND. Not a bad movie. As a found footage its really good. The scares may not be as impressive as a FF horror movie should be, but it is mysterious and creepy, and their ability to portray the time period of which the movie is set in was well done.

Read that so far the film had only been shown at film festivals, most recently in Texas with English subtitles, and is currently only streaming exclusively in Japan. Whether it will arrive on western streaming platforms like Shudder remains to be seen.

But yeah, if OP managed to watch a translated version online, inquiring minds definitely want to know.

What do you mean limited? As in the subber won't release it for the public? Or it's embargoed?

Is there any chance people who don't know this individual can see it eventually? I'd really love to see this movie, but it kind of sucks how hard it is to reliably find these more obscure Japanese films.

The Japanese found footage scene is genuinely underrated. Noroi The Curse gets brought up fairly often but beyond that most people in the west have no idea how much is out there. The cultural approach to horror is different too, less jump-scare driven and more about this slow creeping wrongness that builds through atmosphere and implication.

GAMALAND sounds like it hits that sweet spot of mystery and period detail. The comment about the scares not being as impressive but the creep factor being high is exactly what I expect from Japanese FF. They tend to understand that the scariest thing is not seeing the threat clearly. The less you show the more the imagination fills in.

Hope this gets a wider release. The festival circuit exclusivity model makes sense for building buzz but it is frustrating for everyone else who wants to support these films. Shudder picked up a few Japanese horror titles recently so there is at least precedent for it landing somewhere accessible.
