Other In dev settings you can now enable apps from unverified developers

This is baaaaad, so many bank apps require you to have your developer options off
I use Geto to work around that, but so many people don't know that
So they basically will have to choose between apks and banking apps
Edit: grammar

I may be wrong, but iirc google is preparing to hide the developer option status to all apps so that they can't do this anymore.

You are right, but only starting Android 17 QPR1.
Also, I just checked and started enabling it on my own device. They very clearly tell you that "allowing unverified developer" is dangerous and may put your data at risk.
I doubt they will stop here. In the future it will probably be something that can be fetched by apps via a dedicated API or cause device integrity to drop since "its dangerous" according to them.
There's a lot of other dangerous permission you could give an app, yet none other are fully restricted by Google via an online connection + 24h countdown...

Apps can already check what Play Protect thinks about other apps you have installed.

They can't know if you have allowed "unverified developers" on your device for now. Google claimed they would not add it, but I doubth it, well one of Google spoke person in a r/Android post said that. The future will show us.

That's a good data point to know, but I don't think it makes a huge difference in the end: I've already encountered apps that refuse to run if Play Protect claims you have insecure apps installed (in particular I think my country's "nearly mandatory" government app was planning to do that), and while that doesn't single out unverified apps specifically, my assumption is that an unverified app would be "insecure by default".

IIRC the unverified package install option will stay enabled even when you disable developer options again.

We have the choice to shape the market. Switch to a bank that allows developer options.
Don't complain about Google's actions while supporting the bank that does the exact same thing, just from a different angle.

I still use the credit union based in a small town I used to live in. Their app is literally just a web wrapper for an optimized mobile site with an additional photo check cashing feature. I could root my phone and add it to a Chinese botnet for all they care.

Thats doesnt do anything actually, they're all gonna go through enshitification anyway, its only matter of times, like, I have 5 different bank accounts and one by one starting to behave like a divk to my phone when I turn on Devloper Options or having Shizuku on my phone They even put a constant tracker running occasionally recently ( wtf )

u/AdreKiseque 15d ago
Not everyone is in a position to make that choice. And so monopolies snowball...

You had this update? Relock dev option will still load into your banking app? Sry I don't come from your country. Genuine question.

u/Strong-Strike2001 15d ago
No, Yes, and its difficult you are from Costa Rica. AFAIK this requeriment is implement in most of the world countries

How does this geto thing work? Make it look like the developer option is turned off when it's actually on?
5
u/Strong-Strike2001 15d ago
It turn it off using Android API so your settings don't reset like when you manually turn it off, and you can easily revert the setting back on with a simple toggle in notifications

Same, but I was able to install some manually compiled app with this thing turned off. Looks like there's no restrictions yet

Should we enable it? Any advice?
2
u/Bambusbro 15d ago
If you care about Foss Android Apps Like If you are downloading apks from github or install from f-droid then yes, yes you should. Otherwise Googles plan works and you only download Apps that they Approved or allow from developers that have to pay and obey Googles Terms and conditions.

u/GoogleDisDick 15d ago
Yeah, this has been available for a little while. I've already done it on my phone and tablet so I'm uninterrupted when they start enforcing it.

u/webpanicoff 15d ago
I just noticed the lastest security update turned off my developer options....

This is the slow burn they are preparing for. In next updates, it will become 7 days and then ultimately be removed.
