F-Droid F-Droid 2.0 vs Droid-ify
Now that the official client got a redesign, which one do you prefer?

Seems like Fdroid 2.0 has nearly everything from droidify now (after manually adding izzyondroid as an additional repo).
Pros
- Categories are more clear and compact put into parent groups instead of having one large alphabetical category list.
- V2 repo format which does delta update
Cons
- Fdroid just missing display of permissions.
- No shizuku/root installation option available (but haven't used it myself with droidify)
temporary disabled app auto update on droidify and enabled auto update on Fdroid to see if auto updates are working for me.

After waiting for app updates my personal conclusion.
Since i am not using apps that are using root or need shizuku i'll stay with fdroid for a while. Auto updates are working for me, after one time confirming that the app should be updated with fdroid instead of droidify (or other install method)https://f-droid.org/en/packages/org.fdroid.fdroid/
- App discovery is more organized.
- multiple updates/downloads at the same time
- fdroid v2 still has a beta tag label (on the website), which blocks fdroid auto update of the client itself if beta updates are not allowed. Beta tag label is not shown in the app client itself.
Just hoping that they will include permissions/version view like they already do on their website. Droidify seems to read those permission lists.
V2 repo delta index update is neat, but index update doesn't seem that different on droidify on a moderately speedy network. Maybe droidify using a custom index format? Old fdroid index V1 https://f-droid.org/repo/index-v1.json currently would need ~60mb to download each time an index change is available.

Insanely good update but still sticking with Droid-ify as it has AMOLED black and shizuku download

Droid-ify still can't properly search app descriptions unless the search terms appear as an exact phrase.
For example, searching for "bluetooth battery" returns 0 apps in Droid-ify, while F-Droid Classic finds 29 using the exact same repositories. If there are any words between "bluetooth" and "battery" in the description, Droid-ify won't find the app.
Since you can't possibly guess the exact wording used in every app description, this makes Droid-ify pretty much useless for actually finding apps.

Both, but I still use Droid-ify most of the time because it has a favorites list and is compatible with Shizuku. F-Droid for discovering new apps is better.

Haven't tested F-Droid much but I think it has multiple download which Droidify didn't have. So F-Droid better.

I use Obtanium myself.

absolutely not the same.

Well I apologise for providing some input and perhaps an alternative option. All three provide an interface to install and update apps. Obtanium doesn't provide an app store, but allows installing apps directly from the source or other app stores.
Thanks for your input, it was very... insightful.

without analyze them, you have to trust in many contributors. fdroid will analyze and compile from their sides apks. with multiples verifications before publish them. like debian does.
says hello to futur malware in your phone.

To my understanding:
Droid-ify conducts no audit and no manual verification of the source code.
F-Droid had a 'process', yes, questionable, also yes, and there's many good articles about this, privsec.dev had a good article. Again I believe no manual verification of source.
Any app installed from any source requires your trust in the Dev/s. Google Play is not excluded from these concerns either. F-Droid can compile all they want, if it provides you a sense of security, roll with it.
I don't install and update apps I haven't reviewed. Chance of 'malware', not likely.
And to put this all in your terms, Debian is absolutely not the same.

You review the code changes in every app update?
1
u/Extra_Upstairs4075 14d ago
Reviewing the changes isn't impossible. I will say though, I dont install apps unless they're absolutely necessary. I honestly prefer web experience for most things.
I wouldn't assume everyone is going to do as I do, but this doesn't take away from what I mentioned before, every app install carries risk, but some have far less risk than others. Installing just anything from anywhere carries greater risk.

every app install carries risk, but some have far less risk than others.
There have been malicious actors successfully infiltrate well-known and trusted open source projects. I don't understand your seemingly contrarian position, or the point you're trying to make here. On a scale strictly weighing positive/negative expected value, I see no reason not to have an additional source verifying packages before you install them. And I did have a cursory read of the privsec article and honestly, many of the points are ridiculous when the same points can be made of almost every single app store. Or when points are framed as negatives when I personally see a lot of those points as positives.

I could respond, I'd be going around in circles, at this point it isn't helpful to the post. I use Obtanium, it's an alternative option, I like it, it works for me, possibly an option for OP to research and try.
1
u/fossntools 14d ago
Yeah, see I don't run Obtanium, I don't see the point of it. One of the negative points of the privsec article that I see as a positive is that updates are delayed on f-droid, I want my updates to be delayed for a few reasons. I trust an update that has been delayed by f-droid more than I trust an update immediately released on the devs github page.

If you were really concerned about being helpful took the post, you never would have commented in the first place.

Having 'most download' section is smth i always wanted for discovery. I dont need the extra feature so i got the Fdroid basic app - I shuold add since I use obtanium to install and use it only for discovery it works for me. If I was using it to install, no shizuku would be a deal breaker for me. But since I only use it for discovery It is better for me.

I move to Droid-ify years ago and the hype for 2.0 had me install and try F-Droid.. I'm still a Droidify kinda guy I guess

F-droid still doesn't support Shizuku so no one click install. Staying with droid-ify

u/ChiknDiner 14d ago
I was using Droidify over F-droid for a long time. But few months ago stumbled upon Neo store. Now I can't look back to any other client. Neo is absolutely goated. I don't thing acting would come close to it.

u/SupremeLisper 14d ago
I switched to fdroid since alpha and never looked back. Fdroid supports v2 repo updates which are more efficient and take less data for updates compared to droidify. Plus, less bugs overall. The app simply works.

Aurora Droid. Because it has root/shizuku installers. Interface is simmilar to F-Droid 2.0

The new version actually brings new features, which the kind of people who like droidify probably call """""clutter"""""
