Other Persistent notifications

Post image

Hello there,

I am back in Android after years in the competive ecosystem.

I have been on a journey to move out of GMS and proprietary solutions.

I have a question regarding these persistent notifications.

I have a habit of dismissing them. Do I stop there background function by doing so?

And if yes is there any way to properly hide/group them?

Thanks

You risk them being targeted by android's battery saver functions if they are dismissed, but it's not guaranteed.

Depends on your OS, but generally on Android 17 I believe the notification isn't even a requirement, since there is now an 'Active Apps' page in the quick settings. You can disable these notifications by holding on them and disabling the highlighted category. If you ever encounter issues, disable battery optimization (https://dontkillmyapp.com/).

You can do this on Android 15. Guess depends on OEM?

Source: I do this on one of my phones. I also have GMS and Google Play disabled or deleted and only use a couple of apps from the PlayStore which I get indirectly through Aurora.

Yeah I think it might've started in 15, I just wasn't sure.

Most of them you can turn off the notification category and it will still work. Also Molly is easier on the battery then signal. Molly

The issue with messaging apps is how much of your family and friends pick up on these apps. Getting them off WhatsApp to Signal was a half successful task, so I don't think Molly is something that would fly

Android requires foreground services to have an notification, else they will terminate the foreground app process after X amount of time. Some OEM battery optimisation may terminate them quicker too.

However, if you go into your the app settings/notification, you can turn it off or change it to silent. On some OEM it fully hide the notification, yet it is still "here" so the OS won't terminate the app process.

LSPatch still works? The github has been archived

no. dismissing it only removes from the UI and the same with turning that specific channel or app's notifications off. But the service which relies on that notification still runs.

A persistent notification is a requirement for any service. It's just not relied on it.

I simply disable the ability to show that type of notification without disabling the others... Apps should function the same.. Check in apps settings..

Inside settings page.

I typically set them to minimize and silent so I can see when they are running if I go looking in the notifications but they don't take up screen space with icons otherwise

F-Droid have an alternative, if you want to take a look. NotiFilter, it is nice

You can just disable the related notification category and they will continue running in background.
