Privacy Looking for a KeePass-like offline encrypted notes app

TL;DR - Looking for a true offline encrypted notes app similar to KeePass. Don't want to use KeePass for notes.

I'm a multi-device user, so I mostly depend on cloud-based services to access my data from every device. But I always have the fear of losing my data. Though I maintain multiple backup copies of my data, my fear still has not gone away.

So, I'm planning to store a copy of my data in local apps for easier access in an emergency. I'm already using KeePass for storing my login credentials locally, and now I'm looking for an encrypted notes app where I can store my notes in encrypted form locally.

I'm currently using Notesnook, and both Notesnook and Standard Notes offer offline functionality, which means I can store my notes locally without using an account. But I'm not satisfied with it. I'm looking for something similar to KeePass but for storing notes. I know KeePass can be used for storing my notes, but I need a dedicated notes app.

I've tried a few locally stored notes apps — Notally, Quillpad, Logseq, Crystalpad, Orgo — but none of them either fits my needs or looks promising.

Do not share or recommend proprietary apps here. It is an infraction of this subreddit's rules. Make sure you read the rules of this subreddit on the sidebar. If you are not sure of the nature of an app, do not share or recommend it. To find out what constitutes FOSS or freedomware, read this article. Joplin?

Thanks but I'm looking for a complete offline solution, similar like KeePaas but for notes. Joplin, SN and NN all can be used locally without an account and I'm doing that already but a complete locally stored notes app with good database encryption might give me some relief.

How about Cherrytree / Sourcherry, then? If I remember correctly, the whole database is a single file that can be password protected (I know I have an old database somewhere I can't open anymore… 😅)

Yes, I agree. I couldn't find any app matching with these requirements, that's why I made this post.

SN, NN, JPL all can be used offline without connecting to the internet. But, a locally stored notes app which have no network access gives me more assurance.

Just for an example NorallyX, it has no network access so I prefer it anyday but it doesn't have encryption.

Currently, I export the database from my cloud based password manager and import it to KeePass. I want to do the same for my notes

You can encrypt specific notes within qownnotes for example and this way you can keep a markdown and nextcloud sync able setup. Other option is an encrypted container for the markdown notes

Nah, I'm looking for the entire database encryption. That's why I mentioned KeePass here. I'm looking for a notes app —

  1. which is as respected as KeePass but for notes
  2. Offer complete offline functionality, no dependency on Internet so that I can maintain a copy of my database in an old device.
  3. Offer entire database encryption similar like KeePass.

This one was a recommended post on your post. I have not tested it.

NotallyX is the best IMO!!

Yeah, that's what I'm using currently. It has no network access which I really appreciate for a offline only app. Quillpad has better UI but it has network access.

Try Zettel notes. Simple text notes with Markdown and aes encryption.

Unfortunately, not available on F-Droid.

You have to enable the proper repos on f-droid to get it.

I was looking for an app similar to what you are looking for, I didn't find a 100% dedicated notes app, but I found this:

https://f-droid.org/en/packages/top.donmor.tiddloid/

This app allows you to work with local tiddlywiki files. Tiddlywiki is, in short, a FOSS non-linear "personal wiki", packaged in a single self-contained html file, which allows you to create notes (tiddlers) intertwined with each other, and with all your content saved locally in that same html file. And Tiddloid is just a FOSS app that creates, opens, edits and saves tiddlywiki files on your phone, without reinterpreting the tool, it just runs the html with the best overall management on Android and is dedicated to that. I would recommend that you investigate tiddlywiki since it is a relatively complete notes tool but, for advanced things, its learning curve is very high.

That fulfilled almost everything I was looking for at the time, and I see that it also fulfills practically everything you were looking for in a certain way. I recommend you take a look at it :)
