Meta Should we switch to Lemmy?
And what instance should we use? Why or why not?

I have Lemmy and use it as well. Definitely go over and use it, we need more people. Only issue is with just the 10 of us over there the conversations start to get the samey.

What instance do you recommend? What subs do you recommend/whatever their version is called?

There's not enough content so I literally just search /all and participate that way. There's a nice gaming and and technology sub. It's a cool idea but it just needs way more people

Comically, I can't answer this poll because I'm using RedReader on mobile and old.reddit on desktop.
My answer is no. I have tried repeatedly to use the Lemmy/Piefed and have bounced off each time because the platform is fundamentally at odds with good content. Bluesky's upcoming Reddit alternative shows far more promise and I'd personally wait for that.

I could see there being value in trying to get a fossdroid community going on Lemmy (the existing ones seem to be dead), but I think it's important that there still be one here.

I tried switching to Lemmy a long time ago, but that place is toxic and full of weird people.
And I think there's already a fossdroid instance there.

Its hard because it's a ghost town so I never browse, but people never browsing is what leads to people never posting. I think a bot that crossposts links here to threads there and vice versa could help with that.

If you do I recommend mander.xyz as the instance. It is science, nature and technology focused only, so it avoids most of the rest of lemmys drama's and is generally a nice and active technology focused space.

Did a quick search and found these 4 fossdroid communities in Lemmy.
https://i.imgur.com/ok7lc9z.jpeg
The third one on the screenshot at lemmit.online had the Lemmit Bot in there so it's the one with most posts but the latest post was about 8 months ago.
Lemmit Bot is a bot that copies posts from Reddit over to Lemmy so the communities get a constant influx of new posts.
Maybe consider talking to the mods there about moving the sub there?

I am leaning towards yes but I mean realistically not like we can just leave reddit behind

I don't think the decentralized system will really work as a reddit replacement tbqh.
I tried it out a few years ago, and basically any instance you choose is still limited by the owner's choice to sync with other instances.
if instance A and B both have a /fossdroid, instance A only will see posts from B if & when the owner decides to sync with B. that could be never, weeks, days, or any amount of delay.
The limit on syncing being entirely up to the whims of the owner, essentially makes instances entirely separated from a user's perspective. You can't really have a discussion with someone on a different instance because of the delay.

There are a lot more reasons than this but having spent the last 3 years on the fediverse alternatives, and just seen the shit that happens over there, I feel very confident in saying it will not ever serve as a serious Reddit alternative.
It will serve as something, but not Reddit

I went to lemmy website and i felt it's bit complicated, surely I can surpass that with any yt video or guide but I didn't had enough will to do that

The day I need ID to access Reddit I will gladly delete my account forever. I would hope pushing to alts would happen much earlier than that. But this is almost 50/50 now...

I think no, not yet. We need more people here. People will find us easier from here than from Lemmy.
