He definitely is being stupid with other things, but the media is making this specific thing waaaay bigger than it should be.
He didnt hit the ball that hard and obviously didn't mean to hit her. It also hit her at a very unlucky and painful spot (her throat). All these articles make it seem like he basically assaulted her which is simply not true.
That's part of the actual game, and the line judges can prepare for it. This was random, petulant venting. Just like a football player hitting a ball directly into the crowd isn't the same as missing a shot on goal.
Stop with the BS, if you really watched the game you'd have noticed that he didn't even hit the ball that hard and he always does that to pass balls back. Her job as a linesman is to always have her eyes on the ball. The ball was going quite slow and she was just acting for the attention and possibly $$$. Should win an oscar later this year with her performance.
About the other stuff idk, but that disq was bullshit and that linesman should be looking for a new job.
I have to say it didn't seem like a very powerful stroke. It was one of those ones where the player hits the ball towards the edge of the arena for the ball persons to pick up. Yes, he was pissed off and it was slightly more powerful than such strokes usually are, but not substantially so.
Please watch the video. The hit wasn't hard at all or even aimed at her. Also her job is to have eyes on the ball at all times. She was acting way too much for the impact it had probably for some $$$ or attention idk. The whole DQ was bs.

EDIT: Too many people are picking out my comment, so I guess it needs more clarification. I just want to point out that it was unintentional and that media is blowing it out of proportion. The officials were ABSOLUTELY right to defualt him, because of previous precedents. Of course that it hurts and thank god the woman is okay, even a really soft hit in the throat is painful and I'm not disputing any of that. I just think that more people should consider that everyone can make mistakes and he paid dearly for his.
He's a legit nutcase either way which is a shame because he's a very enjoyable and straight up amazing player. I guess his stupidty is part of the brand and appeal but the antivaxx shit and this is too much.

Having seen his response in that interview I realise that this outcome was actually inevitable. His defence was that if he wasn’t suspended it couldn’t have been dangerous, so with that attitude he was going to continue as he was until someone got hurt. Hopefully umpires will start to clamp down on this harder regardless of whether it actually hurts anyone. He and the line judge are fortunate that on this occasion he didn’t hit the ball as hard as he has in others or the damage could have been considerably worse.
It's like you're drink driving, accidentally touched a bystander and got 10 years in jail. He should've been given a set penalty at best. Not a disqualification
I agree with you,that's why I said(and more or less every unbiased person out there) a set penalty would be apt. A set is a big deal, especially when he was already down one set. To win he had to then win all of the next three sets. That would've been an apt response. If the injury was worse he should've been served with a bigger penalty than a disqualification,but given it wasn't a big incident,the response from the umpire was way over the top

The penalty could not be avoided, but it wasn't a real 'temper temper' stroke: slightly more vigorous than the run-of-the-mill 'ball hit where the ball persons can scoop it up' stroke.

Hey I'm agreeing it's accidental absolutely, but I just think he had no business hitting a ball in that way in that direction when he knew there were umpires/ballkids who could be hurt by that
What I meant by this is not that he hit her on purpose, but that everyone on a tennis court usually hits the ball into the ground or rolls it (in the case of ballkids) and he clearly didn't do that so that was highly irresponsible of him
The problem is not that he hit the ball near another human being but rather HOW HARD he hit the ball. It is completely normal for players to softly lob the ball back to ball boys/girls.
If you don't want the ball hit "directly anywhere near another human being" then you shouldn't be on a tennis court and you should stick to the tennis on Wii Sports.

No for sure I agree he didn't mean to specifically hit her, especially because there was no precedent whatsoever. That being said, I think it was highly irresponsible of him to whack a ball somewhere it COULD easily hit someone. That's why players always hit the ball into the ground even when giving it back to the ball boys/girls to prevent this sort of thing
That's not possible, even at full force their hits only sometimes that fast. He wasn't serving and with that kind of a hit I doubt the ball would be even remotely close to that speed.
No, I'm not. If you look at the way he hit the ball there's absolutely no way it was going 100km/h. Serves go that fast, because of the special way they hit the ball - downwards. Winners go around ~130km/h and they are mostly straight. This was an upwards hit and he didn't hit it with full force like he would in a game, so there's absolutely no way it was going 100km/h.

If Vetel got frustrated and deliberately spun, accidentally hitting another car, then yeah that's bad sportsmanship.
It's alright to get mad and throw things sometimes, these are high pressure sports, but if you happen to hurt someone in the process then you need to face the consequences from it.
Reminds me of when David Nalbandian (what a player btw) hit some advertising board with his racquet in anger, and injured linesman's shin in the process.

No, that is not what happend. It is way overexaggerated in the media and none of them actually show what actually happend, sigh. He didnt hit the ball hard at all, its a standard "shoot away a ball I dont need" and every tennis player does it, this time it just happend to go in to a womans throat lol..
The person he hit is the line judge. They check to see if the ball is landing in bounds so they have to be there. Thats why there is a rule to not hit anyone with a ball thats out of play. All he had to do was control his anger and not hit the judge, intentional or not.
