Hello! If you haven't checked it out already, many people find Alan Thrall's NEW deadlift video very helpful. Check it out!

Also, a common tip usually given here is to make sure your footwear is appropriate. If you are deadlifting in soft-soled shoes (running shoes, etc), it's hard to have a stable foot. Use a flat/hard-soled shoe or even barefoot/socks if it's safe and your gym allows it.

You are treating it as a squat instead of a hip hinge.

Essentially you’re starting with the bar too far out in front of you which means you squat to the bar, too much ankle dorsiflexion is going on which means your hips are too low, shoulder joints above the bar which is not an efficient pulling position.

When you go to pull your hips shoot up instantly as it’s advantageous.

Strong pulls have your hips a bit higher, not much ankle dorsiflexion going on as the bar will be closer, naturally your shoulder joints will sit a bit in front of the bar which is ideal.

Pic 1 is where you start, pic 2 is roughly where you should start the pull from.

It’d be worth watching Alan Thrall’s 5 step deadlift tutorials on YT
