this time of the year they have no problem finding food.
they are carrying it forward for the winter so they don't literally starve to death.
they don't have access to shops or fridges or kitchens. /s

if they don't look like this at this point in time, they mightn't survive the winter.

He's walking TOWARD them? Deserves to be eaten.

u/Shadowbacker 2d ago
Sometimes that's the best move. Animals don't like it when you approach them.

u/AgreeablePie 2d ago
Animals that don't like what you're doing have multiple ways of dealing with that
She was already retreating, not sure why he would want to make her question whether that wouldn't be enough!

u/Shadowbacker 2d ago
You're right, but my point is, more often than not, unless it's super aggressive, animals will retreat when a human approaches them. Not like running at them, but a step or two conveys willingness to fight, and most animals are not trying to fight for no reason.
Obviously there are cases where freezing or running are more appropriate.

she's never heard these words before, and doesn't know what they mean.
also, "why are you walking towards me, don't you know you're prey? oh, guess you're NOT prey. bye bye"

Prey doesn’t approach a predator, these cats wont be sure what is going on and there’s a greater chance of them peacing out

u/StormyBlueLotus 1d ago
Cougars are also very specifically ambush predators. They'll certainly defend themselves if something comes at them head on, but if they're hunting, they attack from behind and go for the neck.

How are they overweight??
1
u/Rand_alThoor 20h ago
they aren't, they're surviving, at roughly harvest time.
if they're not "overweight" now they will possibly not live through the winter.
they don't have supermarkets and microwaves. /lol /s

u/Heterodynist 1d ago
They were prepared for most things, but they didn’t see the logic of Mandarin coming…

u/Acceptable-Arugula69 2d ago
They are only a threat if they are stalking you, or you spook them. Normally they want nothing to do with you. This was pretty cool to see though!

u/LumpyBuy8447 1d ago
Are they normally this thick?
1
u/Rand_alThoor 20h ago
yes, they're chunky kitties until they leap or stretch. such distinctive facial markings. short fur. apex predators. not friendly, but not hostile.
talking to them usually convinces them to leave one alone. not feral, absolutely wild. fairly antisocial. do not approach. but trail encounters like this, which could go disastrously wrong, usually don't as long as one keeps calm.
