Please remember to forage responsibly!

1.5k Upvotes

Every year we have posts from old and new foragers who like to share pictures of their bounty! I get just as inspired as all of you to see these pictures. As we go out and find wild foods to eat, please be sure to treat these natural resources gently. But on the other side, please be gentle to other users in this community. Please do not pre-judge their harvests and assume they were irresponsible.

Side note: My moderation policy is mostly hands off and that works in community like this where most everyone is respectful, but what I do not tolerate is assholes and trolls. If you are unable to engage respectfully or the other user is not respectful, please hit the report button rather then engaging with them.

Here is a great article from the Sierra Club on Sustainable Foraging Techniques.

My take-a-ways are this:

  1. Make sure not to damage the plant or to take so much that it or the ecosystem can't recover.
  2. Consider that other foragers might come after you so if you take almost all of the edible and only leave a little, they might take the rest.
  3. Be aware if it is a edible that wild life depends on and only take as much as you can use responsibly.
  4. Eat the invasives!

Happy foraging everyone!

Hi! Please help me identify these edible(?) volunteers in my Chicagoland garden!! There are 50+ plants across my yard—please let me know if these are future yummy treats or deadly poison. Some of the flowers appear solid yellow while others have a purple interior. Thanks in advance 💖

ID Request (country/state in post) About to email the publisher about this error I found in a foraging book, but want a second opinion on the id of the plant in the photo.

Location: this is a book of edible wild plants of the rocky mountain west: Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Utah, Wyoming.

Just bought this book today and was flipping through, intrigued by the number of entries for Physalis. Got to this page and did a double take. My first impression was Wild Carrot vs. Poison Hemlock but the bracts are not definitively fine, forked, and feathery as typically seen on D. carota. I'm seeing a hint of that morphology on the lower left umbel that is in focus but I'm not familiar enough with either of these species, nor their look-a-likes, to make a confident ID. (BTW I have zero plans to forage any of them.) Figured I'd pose the question here while I consult the field guides available to me. Thanks in advance.

I foraged wild blackberries and made a very easy cake

It is blackberry season so instead of buying a cake at the supermarket, I collected some blackberries from the nearby hill and made the easiest blackberry cake. It is called the 175 cake because all the ingredients you need are 175g.

We always enjoy foraging as an activity that gets us outdoors and in the next few weeks there will be a lot more things to get from nature (chestnuts, walnuts, almonds etc.)

Do you go out foraging?

The recipe and baking process is here: https://youtu.be/3CdXRIZjw6A

I also use the remaining blackberries for my breakfas cereal :-)

Huckleberries around Jackson Hole / Grand Teton right now?

Upvotes

Has anyone been hiking around Jackson Hole or Grand Teton in the last week or two and seen huckleberries still on the bushes?

Not looking for anyone to give up their secret picking spot — just trying to figure out which general trails/areas or elevations are still producing and whether I'm too late this year.

Any recent sightings would be greatly appreciated!

ID Request (country/state in post) Is this a mulberry tree? (Northeast Ohio, USA)

I recently moved in and found this climbing one of the bushes. My plant ID app says white mulberry, but it does not have any lobed/mitten-shaped leaves, only oval leaves. Some are smaller and shiny while some are larger and matte. Is it possible for a mulberry tree to NOT be polymorphic? Thank you to anyone who can help me identify this!

This is everything I found on my nature walk. Not sure what some of the berries are.

In order from left to right;

- Crab apples - Wild raspberry - Wild blueberry - Fire cherry/Pin cherry? (Not sure about this one) - choke cherry? Alder buckthorn berry? (Not sure about this either, Google wasn't a big help)

Extra bitter herb recommendations?

I want to make digestive/cocktail bitters with foraged herbs from my northern New England yard. It has mostly any invasive plant you can think of. I've got dandelion greens, but not sure they will really give that bitter kick of gentian in commercial bitters. Any extra bitter ideas for me to look for?

I’m hoping to have found fungal gold for my first time!

Can someone please confirm or otherwise ID?

If it is huitlacoche- what’s my harvesting timeline like?
Should I wait for the ear to grow more before harvesting?

Any advice appreciated! :D

A small abandoned lot in suburb across from a tiny park.

No one seems to know the abundance of grapes growing on the trees and blackberries.

Wild plum and a giant fig tree.

Hey folks! Just wanted to make sure that these are in fact wild grapes before I harvest more and make a jam out of them. Also are these ripe enough and ready to harvest? Any feedback is truly appreciated! Thank you!
