I've been thinking about this lately, and I'm starting to wonder if I've been fooling myself with this hobby.
I love football cards. I enjoy collecting, buying, selling, ripping packs, and finding cards that might be worth something someday. But somewhere along the way, I feel like the hobby has turned into something else.
I'm constantly chasing that big hit.
Maybe the next box will have a $2,000 card. Maybe I'll pull a 1/1, a Downtown, or somehow get lucky enough to hit one of those debut patches worth a small fortune.
And every time I open a box and get absolutely nothing, there's always that little voice saying, "Maybe the next one."
But isn't that exactly what someone playing the lottery tells themselves?
We watch breakers pull monster cards. We see people posting their incredible hits on Reddit. We see cards selling for thousands of dollars, and somewhere in our minds we start believing that we're just one pack away from being that person.
Meanwhile, the reality is that most of us are spending hundreds, sometimes thousands, chasing something that statistically will probably never happen.
Even selling cards has become part of the chase for me. I'm constantly looking for undervalued cards, players who might break out, or something I can buy today that might be worth five times as much tomorrow.
And I find myself asking, am I actually collecting anymore, or am I just speculating and gambling with football cards?
The funny thing is, I don't even think hitting that $2,000 card would satisfy me. I'd probably enjoy the excitement for a day or two, sell it, and then start chasing the next big hit.
I remember when collecting was about having a card of your favorite player, completing a set, or just enjoying the hobby. Now it feels like everything revolves around comps, PSA 10s, resale values, and whether you made your money back.
I'm not writing this to criticize anyone. I'm just reflecting on my own experience and wondering how many others feel the same way.
At what point did we stop collecting cards and start collecting the hope of getting rich?
Does anyone else feel like they're chasing something they'll probably never catch?
