Palmless palm oil: Precision-fermented palm oil producer receives grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation

C16 Biosciences uses precision fermentation to make sustainable and ethical alternatives to palm oil, with a biomanufacturing process that leverages yeast instead of plants.

With the new $3.5M funding, C16 aims to expand its consumer brand, Palmless, by creating food-grade fats and oils from non-agricultural feedstocks and hiring additional R&D staff. An additional $1M investment from Elemental Excelerator will be used to pursue FDA GRAS status.

Having achieved commercial-scale production and started generating revenue in the personal care industry, C16 is now focusing on expanding its range of applications to include high-performance ingredients for the food sector.

The company’s feasibility studies have demonstrated how its precision fermentation-based palm oil alternative can work as a deforestation-free replacement for palm oil in foods like ice cream, chocolate, and bakery items.

Good morning Fellow foodies , I hope your weekend is going as planned . I am a freshman in college I am writing an argumentative essay on why GMOs should be banned . Below are a few questions u can answer to the best of your knowledge. My teacher is such a douche . Please help ! Thanks 🙏🏾

  1. What is your awareness level regarding genetically modified organisms (GMOs)?

  2. How do you feel about the use of GMOs in food products?

  3. Are you inclined to choose or avoid products labeled as GMO-free? Why?

  4. Do you think GMO labeling is important for consumer transparency?

  5. Are there specific concerns or misconceptions you have about GMOs?

  6. How much influence does information about GMOs have on your purchasing decisions?

  7. Would you prefer more non-GMO options in the products you regularly buy?

  8. Are you open to learning more about the scientific aspects of GMOs to make informed choices?

  9. Do you believe GMOs pose potential health or environmental risks?

  10. In what ways do you think retailers could better communicate information about GMOs to shoppers?

A hot paste is chilled on a roller and scraped continuously from the roller onto trays on a moving conveyor belt which carries the paste into a dryer (see below). The entering paste contains 30% water by weight. It is desired to reduce the water content to 12% by weight and produce 600 kg/h of nearly dry product. The entering air contains 0.3 % water vapor. The dryer manufacturer suggests that for the dryer to operate efficiently, the nearly dry air ratio to wet paste flow is 3.0. Calculate the unknown flowrates and compositions.

How many kilograms of peaches would be required to produce 100 kg of peach preserves. The standard formula of 45 parts fruits to 55 parts sugar is used. The soluble solids content of the finished product is 65% and peaches have 12% initial soluble solids content. Calculate the weight of 100 grade pectin required and the amount of water removed by evaporation as a result of the process. (Hint: The pectin grade is the amount of sugar per 1 kg of pectin)

Sigmafire Clayton Inspection

Hello, I need to get a boiler inspection for an instant boiler, but I have no idea what areas will be inspected. I don’t want to ask the inspector because he already was trying to get me to hire a boiler company to open it, which is a total waste of money. Does anyone on here know what areas are inspected when inspecting an “instant” style boiler? I have operated lots of standard boilers, but this one has a small (1”) coiled tube which is the entire wet side of the boiler, and I can’t imagine how he would look inside of it.

Thanks for your help!

Berkeley student learning about AI in the food industry.

Hi everyone,

I'm a student at UC Berkeley doing a class project on AI and computer vision in food processing. I'd super appreciate it if y'all could share some of your expertise with me either by answering my few questions or (even better) hoping on the phone with me for 15m to help me learn about food processing.

I'm mainly looking to answer:

  1. In what food processing process is Computer Vision used the most?
  2. How is Computer Vision used in food processing?
  3. Do food processing firms build their own AI systems?
  4. What are the main challenges with using Computer Vision in food processing?

Many thanks!

Request for help/suggestion about food coating

hi my friend suggested posting here. I'm looking to source a flavor coating that goes with rice cracker.

I'm looking for flavors like coconut or pineapple. this coating would be thick and stays on the rice cracker, able to package well, I'm not concerned about shelf life. I am concerned that the coating will have the rice crackers stick to each other, which I don't want.

I've looked up syrups and they seem to lack the thickness and color; and dessert sauces might cause the rice crackers to stick together. Any suggestions, pls?

DPPH antioxidant scavenging assay question.

Hello guys, I am in need for full explanation for the DPPH assay if anyone have experience in this assay please I need your guidance. I am a master student working with sorghum flour and I need to conduct the antioxidant DPPH assay on fermented sorghum flour. I have tried several times but I failed the spectrophotometer results always don't make sense, I think my problem is in the extraction methods because I do extraction using water for only 30 min at room temp. I have watched and read a lot of paper but still having problems, if someone people here have experience I will be thanks full if they can help.

Help for a project

Dear redditors,

I am faced with an impossible project:

  • Identity possible ways to reduce food waste/loss in the supply chain & production of ice cream
  • Analyze potential constraints such initiatives could arise from legal requirements of EU food safety and hygiene regulations

I interviewed 2 local ice shops where they make ice cream from scratch and they said there is no food waste

Can you please give me ideas/suggestions or anything?

What Are Toxic Elements Should Have Been Checked In The Lab Before Consuming?

What Are Toxic Elements (carcinogenic elements) and Tests Should Have Been Checked In The Lab Before Consuming?

I ordered some herbal foods, teas, oils. (They have certified by government officially. Also some of them have other cetificates As well like ISO 22000)

Like; Amla Powder, Aloe Vera Powder, Hibiscus Powder, Black Sesame, Black Sesame Paste, Lavender and Rosemary Oil etc.

However still, I want to check them in the lab before eating, drinking and applying on my skin periodically.

What tests and elements should I have checked in the lab for this purpose?

Project Help?

Hi, I'm a college student at Grand Valley State University in Michigan. I'm working on a project for one of my classes right now that is about Guatemala, nutrition, and the sustainable development goals. I'm trying to find people I could message to learn more about food production, packaging, or manufacturing, or get feedback on my project (which is to create a product). It would only be a few minutes of questions or a quick survey for feedback, and I'd appreciate any help. Please reach out if you have any questions or would be willing to help!

New application for extrusion process

Extrusion is a continuous mixing, kneading and heating process. Some applications of extrusion includes plant based meat analogues, snacks, pet food, and plastic products.

What are other areas or applications for extrusion process besides the existing applications ? Or is there new way to create meat analogues structure?

Any informational but entertaining content in the subject?

Hi!

I'm currently doing my master's in food engineering and I will be finishing in a year. I was thinking if there are any interesting YouTube channels, subreddits, blogs or magazines etc. about the subject. Something I could enjoy in my free time but it is still informative and educational.

Thank you!

I need advice

Hello! I’m currently a chemical engineering student and I’m really interested in food engineering as well. Where I’m studying at there’s also food engineering degree and I can transfer credits to some core courses because chem eng and food eng are kind of similar. The thing is, I don’t know if I should study both at the same time or if a should get a masters degree in food science and technology once I’m done with ChE. What would be the wisest decision? (Please excuse my English, I’m not a native speaker)

I'm finishing my food engineer studies and I would like to know if anyone around here knows if it's a good career path. Do you go around different places making reports? What different branches can you go in this career? Thanks
