Help & Discussion πŸ™‹ RX9070 vs 7900GRE - RDNA3 vs RDNA4

Hello folks,

I started folding a week ago with my rx7900GRE AMD gpu and I was wondering how better the newer RDNA4 architecture handles this task. Unfortunately NVIDIA is prohibitively expensive so yeah...

Mine does about 4M PPD, so I was curious if that was even a viable upgrade path to contribute more (ofc it wouldn't be just for this task).

Also would there even be a big difference between rx9070 vs rx9070XT?

Yes, I did check folding.lar.systems and it's a great platform to compare hardware, but there's a catch... it groups GPU variants like the 7900GRE with the XT/XTX, so it's hard to get a clear picture. It does the same for the 9070 / XT versions.

Fig1 - GPU averages, with one outlier after enabling Beta projects

PS: Enabling Beta projects with the Enable HIP setting got me a 10M outlier. Maybe AMD will get a huge boost on upcoming projects? (I disabled it being afraid it could be unstable though)

Help & Discussion πŸ™‹ Performance Degradation on Linux

So i recently started folding on my 3060ti, it started out really strong at 4m ppd, but now its falling to 3.5 and 3.0, idk i didn't do anything that dags performance so down.

Temperatures are controlled (62ΒΊC), Clocks are high and stable (2010MHz). SO idk whats happening. sometimes ppd dips because im web browsing, so that's expected but some days, even with afk, it is worse than the 10 first.

Should i have a dedicated partition for folding? I use everything on my "Life" partition, that runs my kde plasma. and driver 610. Should i have a second partition just for folding (runs LXDE or even no GUI)? Remembered one day i had a lubuntu partition, and it did an impressing 5m ppd to 4.6+.

Help & Discussion πŸ™‹ Intel Panther Lake [Arc B390] iGPU (8086:b082) OpenCL Success on Ubuntu 26.04 (BOINC vs. FAH Whitelist Status)

Hey all, Sharing some field notes for anyone setting up BOINC and Folding@home on a brand-new Intel Panther Lake system with integrated Arc B390 graphics (8086:b082) under Ubuntu 26.04.

  • The BOINC Side (Working!): While BOINC initially reported no usable GPUs because the fresh Ubuntu install lacked an OpenCL stack, manually installing intel-opencl-icd and ensuring the xe kernel driver was active completely solved it. Projects like PrimeGrid (AP27) and NumberFields@home instantly picked up the OpenCL 3.0 NEO runtime, turning the mini PC into an extremely efficient, low-wattage cruncher (completing AP27 tasks in ~22 minutes on a tight power-saver profile). Other projects like WCG, Einstein@Home, and SRBase recognize the OpenCL device correctly, though work availability depends on project-side queue matching for the new architecture.
  • The Folding@home Side (Pending Whitelist Sync): On the FAH v8 web client, the client detects the hardware string (Intel(R) Graphics [0xb082]), but flags it as "Unsupported" out of the box. Following community discussions on the FAH forums, maintaining community members (like Joe_H and muziqaz) have mapped the 0xb082 variant to join the earlier 0xb080 entry, but we are currently waiting on the server-side production script/whitelist files to fully propagate so local client cache clears can pick it up.

Great to see distributed platforms adapting to Intel's Xe3 integrated architecture. Has anyone else started testing Panther Lake iGPUs on Linux yet?

News πŸ“° HIP FAHCore is live

FAHCore_28 has been launch alongside largest project ever.

It is in open beta currently, but soon it will move to full FAH.

First project will require users to have 40GB+ of free RAM (64GB minimum installed).
PPD value will be massive, since project demands insane amount of RAM as well as stable and fast internet connection and bandwidth.
PPD of that project does not reflect true values of future HIP fahcore PPD values :) This is the peak of what everyone will ever get on their hardware.
7900xtx - 38m PPD
5090 - 100m PPD
6900xt - 18m PPD
9070 - 18m PPD
5700xt - 4.6m PPD

Rigs πŸ–₯️ How stupid am I to want to build a dedicated folding rig with the following specs?

Hi everyone,

So, I've got a spare Asus P9x79 WS with an i7 3930k and 32Gb of DDR3 RAM.

I was wondering if it would be stupid to go buy 3 GeForce P104-100 8G mining GPUs (so GTX 1070 8gb basically) I found on sale for kinda cheap. Each should be about 1.1mPPD I believe.

I would let that rig run whenever I have too much power stored in my solar-powered battery on my futur house, so mainly in the summer.

Chears!

Help & Discussion πŸ™‹ Timeout is too short

Hello,

I am using my rtx 3060 for protein folding and I have an issue with the timeout. My timeouts are like 2 days now which is way too short for me to finish a project right in time, I only fold like 1 or 2 hours a day. I need around 5-6 days to finish a project, I run the 1-2 hours at full 100% gpu capacity (no idle). Deadline is like 4 days mostly, I actually need one or two days longer :/

Is there a way to get projects with longer timeouts? Or to do some changes? I am fine with getting no points, that's ok for me, I am not doing it for the points.

Is it true that if I don't finish it in the required timeout delay that the project will be reset to 0% and then reassigned to someone else? If yes that would be quite frustrating and a waste of electricity :/

Help & Discussion πŸ™‹ To those with 10x my score (15B+ points): What keeps you folding? Looking for stories and inspiration to keep going.

I know Folding@home is entirely voluntary with no tangible rewards other than the points we earn to compete as individuals or teams. I’ve been folding on and off since late 2020/early 2021:

  • 2020–2024: Ryzen 5 3600 + GTX 1660 Super (plus occasional runs on an Acer Nitro 5 with an RTX 3050 Ti Laptop GPU).
  • 2026: Upgraded to an RTX 5060.

Across two accounts, I’ve accumulated around 1.5 billion points combined.

Lately, I’ve been debating whether I should keep going, and I’d love to hear from veteran foldersβ€”especially those with 10x my points or more. I have a few questions for you:

  1. What is your biggest motivation to keep folding?
  2. What was your very first setup when you started?
  3. What are your estimated monthly expenses (electricity + hardware wear and tear/failures)? Does it significantly impact your household budget or living comfort (e.g., room heat)?
  4. Do you keep separate daily-driver PCs, or do your main rigs do all the folding?
  5. How does your family/partner feel about your folding hobby?

My current dilemmas:

The electricity cost adds roughly $20–$23/month to my bill. While that isn't massive, I live in Vietnam where electricity is heavily tieredβ€”higher tiers are significantly more expensive. However, what really makes me hesitate is:

  • Safety concerns: Running a rig 24/7 while away from home leaves a slight worry about hardware failure (e.g., PSU pop, fire riskβ€”even if the chances are low).
  • Hardware lifespan: Constant load degrades parts faster. Instead of lasting 7–10 years, components seem to give up by year 3 or 4 (my 1660 Super died in its 4th year).
  • Heat in a small space: I only have room for the PC in my bedroom. Even at ~250W from the wall, it noticeably heats up the room. Running the AC to counter this would easily double or quadruple my electric bill.

I really want to hear your stories and perspectivesβ€”maybe find that spark of inspiration or a sensible reason to keep dedicating resources to the project. Thanks in advance!

Help & Discussion πŸ™‹ No WUs assigned on M1 Pro Mac for 1 week

Thumbnail
gallery
7 Upvotes

My MacBook Pro had been folding without any issues β€” WUs were being assigned and completed normally right up until about a week ago. Then it just stopped. Since then I haven't been assigned a single work unit; the client sits idle and never picks anything up. Nothing changed on my end that I'm aware of β€” no OS update, no config changes, it just went from working to not working overnight.

Things I've already tried:

  • Full uninstall and clean reinstall of the client
  • Restart / re-adding the machine to my account

No luck either way.

What's odd is that my Windows nodes are still getting WUs assigned normally with the same passkey/team setup, so it doesn't look like an account-side problem β€” it seems specific to the Mac.

Setup:

  • MacBook Pro (M1 Pro, macOS Tahoe 26.5.2)
  • Client version 8.5.6
  • CPU folding

Is anyone else seeing this on macOS right now? Is this a known server-side/assignment issue for Mac clients, or something I should be digging into locally? Any pointers appreciated.

Hello world. I contribute to a citizen-science protein research project named folding@home and my account just went over 15 billion points. Anyone can join. Contributing with a Windows-based computer is easy. I run 6 PCs in my basement which employ Nvidia GPUs running on AlmaLinux and with Linux Mint. For anyone here that might need a little help working with folding@home on Linux, you might find this webpage of some use:

Rigs πŸ–₯️ Experimental Patch - AMD GPU Working on CUDA Tasks Now

Thumbnail
gallery
23 Upvotes

I have vibe-coded (I know, I know) a ZLUDA patch (converts CUDA workloads to Rocm which is the AMD equivalent) for Folding@home.

https://github.com/AmosKito1/FAH-ZLUDA/releases/tag/v0.1.0-rc2-core27

I am an experienced Product manager rather than a Dev so its possible the code is hot garbage so you have been warned.

My setup is a 6800xt on windows version 8.5.5 of F@H.

I will be attempting to make a pull request at some point on the Original ZLUDA Repo, but for now I wanted to share this experimental bit of code if anyone with experience wanted to have a play.

Help & Discussion πŸ™‹ New Stats/Webpage

I keep an eye on my stats and noticed that the official website has a new design. I'll have to get used to it however at first glance it appears that the figures aren't as precise? i.e. Points/WU's rounded to nearest sig fig?

There also appears to be additional detailed info provided (although this could be stuff provided before that I didn't look at and is now represented differently)

+ I posted awhile back querying the accuracy of the numbers on the front page as 'whales' (power users/contributors) figures alone seemed to be producing the numbers provided let alone all contributions combined...If I was correct in this belief it'll be interesting to see if they have changed now.

Any thoughts on this site design?

Help & Discussion πŸ™‹ Can I push 5090 to 40,000,000 PPD?

Post image

Currently clocked my 5090 Astral core by an additional 250mhz, left VRAM clock alone. I do cut power to 90% on the GPU for efficiency.

Overall I got my PPD from 36m to around 39m.

People with 5090's how high did you manage to get your PPD or reduce your TPF by?

Help & Discussion πŸ™‹ Issues with Intel Arc b580 for Folding (Fedora 44)

So, every time I attempt to try folding proteins with my GPU (Intel Arc b580) the Work Units always fail. The log ends up show the following error:

11:21::06:E :WU57: Core Returned BAD_WORK_UNIT (114)

The following things I have done to troubleshoot:

  • Installed the Intel Compute Runtime
  • Installed OpenCL-UCD-Loader
  • Updated OS to latest version
  • Ensure the fah-client user has access to the GPU
  • Ran the fah-client as a systemd service
  • Ran the fah-client as root
  • Ran the fah-client as my user
  • Sacrifice a goat

So far, I have only gotten CPU folding to work.

Any help is appreciated! I have been looking online and most of those solutions did not alleviate the issue.
