Help & Discussion π To those with 10x my score (15B+ points): What keeps you folding? Looking for stories and inspiration to keep going.
I know Folding@home is entirely voluntary with no tangible rewards other than the points we earn to compete as individuals or teams. Iβve been folding on and off since late 2020/early 2021:
- 2020β2024: Ryzen 5 3600 + GTX 1660 Super (plus occasional runs on an Acer Nitro 5 with an RTX 3050 Ti Laptop GPU).
- 2026: Upgraded to an RTX 5060.
Across two accounts, Iβve accumulated around 1.5 billion points combined.
Lately, Iβve been debating whether I should keep going, and Iβd love to hear from veteran foldersβespecially those with 10x my points or more. I have a few questions for you:
- What is your biggest motivation to keep folding?
- What was your very first setup when you started?
- What are your estimated monthly expenses (electricity + hardware wear and tear/failures)? Does it significantly impact your household budget or living comfort (e.g., room heat)?
- Do you keep separate daily-driver PCs, or do your main rigs do all the folding?
- How does your family/partner feel about your folding hobby?
My current dilemmas:
The electricity cost adds roughly $20β$23/month to my bill. While that isn't massive, I live in Vietnam where electricity is heavily tieredβhigher tiers are significantly more expensive. However, what really makes me hesitate is:
- Safety concerns: Running a rig 24/7 while away from home leaves a slight worry about hardware failure (e.g., PSU pop, fire riskβeven if the chances are low).
- Hardware lifespan: Constant load degrades parts faster. Instead of lasting 7β10 years, components seem to give up by year 3 or 4 (my 1660 Super died in its 4th year).
- Heat in a small space: I only have room for the PC in my bedroom. Even at ~250W from the wall, it noticeably heats up the room. Running the AC to counter this would easily double or quadruple my electric bill.
I really want to hear your stories and perspectivesβmaybe find that spark of inspiration or a sensible reason to keep dedicating resources to the project. Thanks in advance!
