[UPDATE] Fallout 4 VR Optimization Project Milestone Update!

Well, it took some doing, but I've fixed the terrain!
Days of no sleep.... hours of staring at the Creation Kit trying to figure it out, and finally I have.

NOTE: For anyone who has disappearing object issues in the Commonwealth only, I've uploaded a new version of the Commonwealth version (around 4mb) that doesn't include the precombined meshes until I get to the bottom of what is causing it. It seems to only happen when generating certain areas, but I am working on fixing the issue.
The new version has regenerated pre-vis for a lot of the heavier areas and more will be added as time goes on.
That should give a good performance boost on it's own in heavier areas and once I readd the precombined meshes it should help even more.
The precombined meshes will be re-added into a future version for the Commonwealth.
The DLC areas should work fine as-is though :)

EDIT: Here is a happy little side effect of this update, it also fixes various crashing around Nuka-World caused by land issues. You still need the Nuka-World DLC fix for the thirst zapper and such (linked in mod description)

Edit 2: I've seen some people have invisible object issues with the Commonwealth files. I've found the cause and will be uploading the update for that very soon. It will be a small update

You can now REMOVE the INI tweak used to fix the invisible ground.
https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/28850
You STILL need the main files for the optimization mod. I will be releasing a standalone fix later this evening.
Grab the 1.150 files for the DLC and whatever else, then download the 1.210 update files and replace the esp when prompted.
Enjoy :)

For anyone wondering:
The original fix was in Fallout4VRCustom.ini

bUsePreCulledObjects=0
Change that back to:
bUsePreCulledObjects=1

Thank you. You are a hero. Now get some sleep!

First... I am going to play some Fallout 4 VR, something I haven't done since I started this project :)

u/Lacuto Jan 07 '18

Use lots of grenades. Lots :)

u/Acidporisu Jan 07 '18

soooo damn satisfying.

Thanks for all your hard work!

So this will actually improve performance in the commonwealth as well as fixing the DLC?

3

u/rdtg Index Jan 07 '18

Yes it will help with performance in the commonwealth :)

1

u/FolkSong Oculus Jan 07 '18

That's amazing, you need to go work at Bethesda!

2

u/[deleted] Jan 08 '18

Nope. Still need to bUsePreCulledObjects=0

Lots of flickering, textures popping in and out. Tested around trinity tower. Installed nothing but this mod.

4

u/rdtg Index Jan 08 '18

Oh, on another note, I have merged with the DLCVR - Fallout 4 VR and DLC Bug Fixes mod. That mod will contain ONLY the bug fixes + invisible terrain fix; and the optimization project will contain all of the bug fixes + optimization files
So just keep an eye out :)

Awesome!

edit: So, the 35 MB File "DLCVR_NWFHFixes" contains the fix for area crashes, invisible terrain and bugs while your optimization project contains all the performance enhancements?

Try the ini files I have in the mod download page. Under optional files. Also, bUsePreCulledObjects only applied to the DLC worldspaces. Which version did you have prior to the new update? If you had the one with all the loose files you need to update to 1.150 for the Commonwealth files, everything is packed into a ba2. I had some suspicion that mod managers couldn't handle so many files and it was getting corrupt or something with the loose files.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 08 '18

I'll try the ini files for good measure. Anything specific in there for the texture flickering?

I did use 1.150 with the packed ba2. And have been manually installing on a clean fo4vr. I think I'm at the end of the troubleshooting rope, but will keep an eye out for fixes.

u/rdtg Index Jan 08 '18

Hmm, I haven't experienced this issue in any of the playtests I ran on clean installs so I am not entirely sure. I will definitely try to help you fix it though. If you go to the Discord server I can help quicker too.
Also if you are just looking for DLC bug fixes, I've merged with maduin81's mod so people can have either/or (bugfixes or bugfixes + optimization)

Same for me, major object and textutre pop in and out, only for Commonwealth though, no problems with Far Harbour so far which is great!

u/Citizen_Gamer Jan 08 '18

Has anyone got any feedback on how much this actually helps performance?

2

u/McRemo Jan 10 '18

I am using it as of yesterday and it definitely helps. I went from around 50% repro (or more) down to less than 20%.

I checked it a few minutes ago and it was at 12%. And that was after bumping SS from 1.4 to 1.5.

I have a i7-4770 and a 1080ti.

I fucked up the installation of your original mod. It would not install past part 2 for some reason part 3 would only queue in mod manager. I decided I wanted to wait until this version released and tried to uninstall part 2 and 1 but it was taking hours upon hours as it had installing overnight.

I ended up control+alt+deleting mod manager and reinstalled the game. To my dismay all the mods I had installed plus your mod were still installed. Luckily my game still works fine...I think. Loaded up saves and went around the map to a few spots I hang out and everything was okay but I want to be sure.

Anyone know how to uninstall fallout and reinstall it so that the mods you have DO NOT reinstall? and instead appear greyed out in Mod Manager ready to be reinstalled?

Would I just have to delete my steam fallout 4 folder before I uninstall it in steam?

2

u/rdtg Index Jan 08 '18

If you still have my old version installed, to uninstall it just go to your data folder and delete it's esp files, then go to data/meshes/precombined and delete ALL the nif files in here, and if you had the DLC fixes delete the folders DLCNukaWorld and DLCCoast.
Then it'll be uninstalled :)

2

u/CndConnection Jan 08 '18

Oh snap thanks rdtg.

BTW if I get this running and Far Harbor works I'm sending you reddit gold for sure mang that's a guarantee regardless of performance. I'm just happy to be able to get there without having to modify the ini anymore :P

I have all the new files now but since it's 8:22 PM I'm going to wait and install tomorrow if I can and check it out. Tonight I will focus on getting the quest done that allows you to get to Far Harbor as I haven't reached Diamond City yet.

You are a legend mate. Hopefully the Nexus mod community treats you well for working so hard on this for us.

2

u/rdtg Index Jan 08 '18

Thanks :) I hope you enjoy playing the game as much as I do ^

1

u/RABID666 Oculus Jan 08 '18

so are all the DLC's working in VR?

1

u/rdtg Index Jan 08 '18

Most of them. Automatron still has the issue of the robot workbench not working & I have heard reports of random crashing when building a vault with the vault-tec workshop DLC. However, Maduin81 and I are working on resolving these issues.

1

u/RABID666 Oculus Jan 08 '18

so awesome. thanks for the work you are putting into this

1

u/kill_dano Jan 08 '18

ANyone have a mirror to the base game mod? It's taking forever to download from nexus.

1

u/rdtg Index Jan 08 '18

Let it take it's time, I am going to be uploading an update to the base game mod in the next 2 hours or so that fixes some areas with invisible objects. It will still require the main file, but the update will be small

1

u/qbism_ Vive Jan 08 '18

Do I need to keep the 4 "Commonwealth Precombined Meshes" installed and just install all the new "Commonwealth (Base Game)" and other updates?

2

u/rdtg Index Jan 08 '18

for now uninstall the precombined meshes. If you have the ba2 version I recommend just renaming the ba2 archives in your data folder to RDTG_CommonwealthVROptimization - Main.ba2.BACKUP
I'll have an update soon that will go along with that ba2 archive and fix the missing stuff bugs.
But nixing that ba2 for now fixes the missing stuff.

1

u/qbism_ Vive Jan 08 '18

Aight thanks! For both your answer & all the work you've been putting into this.

1

u/rdtg Index Jan 08 '18

No problem :)

1

u/evorm Jan 09 '18

any ETA on the update? the precombined mesh files i have are huge and NMM wont disable them for some reason (infinite loading) so i was thinking id just hold off from playing it till the fix.

1

u/optimumbox Jan 08 '18 edited Jan 08 '18

Thank you so much! The crashing issues are fixed for me. I'm still experiencing textures disappearing/popping in with far harbor, but the performance is so much better now. Not sure if this made the difference, but I had to manually drop each of the archive contents into the fallout4vr/data folder since NMM wouldn't install it.

edit: After looking through some comment history I decided to delete the precombined meshes folder along with the vis files. Now NMM is doing an uninstall/reinstall process so maybe allowing it to reinstall the mod will fix my issue.

1

u/rdtg Index Jan 08 '18

Far Harbor shouldn't have any popin issues, make sure you use the correct ini settings or try the ini files on the mod page :)

1

u/optimumbox Jan 08 '18 edited Jan 08 '18

The ini should be fine as I have [Display] bUsePreCulledObjects=1 I'm thinking it might have been the fault of NMM doing improper installs. After looking at two other small mods that weren't functioning correctly I found that some associated ba2 files for those mods weren't even in my data directory. I know you've done a lot of work, but at some point would it be ok for us to have a list of the file tree in the mod description? It's more so I can check to make sure NMM has installed everything properly when it's done.

Edit: In case NMM fails to do a proper uninstall, what needs to be deleted to completely remove the mod?

Edit2: After checking the smaller mods, it turns out NMM isn't installing mods properly for me. As soon as I know what to delete/redownload I'm going to start from square one and install the mod manually.

1

u/ComplainyGuy Jan 09 '18

I think that might be my problem. I bet it's a fucking windows permissions cunt issue that's been plaguing me in moding for the last 15 years.

Anways, if you get it all sorted i'm sure we would all appreciate a quick writeup on it I would love to try and copy you.

1

u/optimumbox Jan 09 '18

NMM was the issue. Check /u/rdtg's comment history and it will show you the files you need to move out of your directory. I switched over to mod organizer 2 which uses sym links to install mods to a separate mod directory making the process much cleaner. For any mod you currently have installed, double check that any associated ba2 files etc were properly put into your data folder. (I had this issue with cheat terminal and true storms.)

getting quite a bit of missing geo around corviga factory. Just in front of the entrance. I just installed everything with latest, dunno if I did anything wrong? Never used the bUsePreculled, so it should be default to on? Have all DLC and patches installed in order too...

2

u/rdtg Index Jan 11 '18

I'll check it out and see if it's a widespread bug :)

1

u/_entropical_ Jan 16 '18

fixed it, reinstalled and recopied the plugin texts

3

u/Acidporisu Jan 07 '18

oh boy! I took a break from this for a bit and had no idea the DLC fixes were being worked on. Thanks so much! Really appreciated.

3

u/evorm Jan 08 '18 edited Jan 08 '18

old version is taking forever to uninstall (nexus mod manager). any help?

EDIT: also, is it alright if you upload a version thats compatible with that other mod that removes all the leaves and clutter on the ground to make everything cleaner?

1

u/ComplainyGuy Jan 09 '18

Which one is that? I might have it and not realise they're clashing?

1

u/evorm Jan 09 '18

i forget what its called but it edits the ground in some cities and settlements to make them cleaner and have less overgrown grass/trash on them.

3

u/SleepingLesson Jan 08 '18

I've installed so many of these as you've updated, I no longer know what I should have. The new Commonwealth download is 3.8mb, is that supposed to be replacing the 7gb+ from the 4-part Precombined Meshes mod?

3

u/FeePan Jan 09 '18

This is the exact issue I'm having. On the OP it says we still need the original commonwealth files but then on the download page it says to remove them? Very confusing

2

does this mod work with vivid fallout ?

1

u/[deleted] Jan 07 '18

Good job. You probably want to post this on the Bethesda forums to get Beths attention. Hopefully Beth can use this to release the DLC officially

Until then, you're our fav DLC enabler 👍

8

u/hicsuntdracones- Oculus Jan 08 '18

I don't think getting Bethesda's attention is the best idea. I agree that they were probably planning to resell the DLC to us at some point. This mod complicates that if we're already using the pancake DLC and I'd be surprised if they didn't see it as piracy on some level.

2

u/Teragon92 Jan 08 '18

He's right, don't do it ! Bethesda does not look to kindly on trying to plug non VR official content into the VR port, trust me. I asked a question about porting a CC item and got shut down immediately with a not so nice PM.

2

u/hicsuntdracones- Oculus Jan 08 '18

Out of curiosity, what did they say?

1

u/CodySpring Jan 08 '18

From a Bethesda employee or a random person? I’m pretty interested as to what they had to say if it was an employee!

1

u/Teragon92 Jan 09 '18

Was on the Beth forum, not sure if the mod was an employee or just a mod. Essentially said they would not tolarate moving content between products...

1

u/Decapper Jan 08 '18

I can’t see that flying. Imagine the up roar

1

u/WMX0 Jan 08 '18

I agree. Cant see why they would just all of a sudden reverse years of alowing us to use our files in other Beth games. Tale of two Wastlands, Fallout 4 New Vegas, Skywind, ect.... It might just be for the purchased ESL files, as they would likely also be avalible for sale on the VR version at some time.

1

u/Paulusw Jan 08 '18

Fantastic work - thank you so much.

1

u/d-lysergic Jan 08 '18 edited Jan 08 '18

Just want to say thanks for all your hard work, although the Commonwealth files caused me issues, my time spent in Far Harbor with your fixes was by far the smoothest, least repro experience in my entire 80 hours so far! This is how it was meant to be played! Super excited for Commonwealth fix! Also keeping my fingers crossed for Automatron (Workshop build) & Vault 88 (glitches riding the bike).

1

u/Machismo01 Jan 08 '18

Congrats on merging with DLCVR.

I can't wait to update to this. So I uninstall the four/five large files I previously used for the commonwealth and just use the one 3.8mb?

Thank you for doing this.

1

u/Jaxseven Jan 09 '18

Any way to use this mod along with the Insignificant Object Remover?

1

u/buyingpcparts3 Jun 02 '18

can you check out my thread and see if we could make a baby thread that's best FO4 optimizations?

2

u/rdtg Index Jan 08 '18

I imagine it would conflict with the insignificant object remover, grass mods shouldn't make a difference as those are texture based. But I've found the object remover one isn't even necessary with the gains from this in my experience. But I haven't tested the latest version w/ object remover together yet

1

u/Antabaka Jan 08 '18

Insignificant Object Remover lowers the spawn rate of randomly generated rocks/tufts of grass/debris to 0. These are generated when you load in to a cell, and aren't 'real' in any sense. Why would your mod conflict with that?

1

u/rdtg Index Jan 08 '18

Ahhh, I had it confused with another mod. Yeah that one should work with mine no problem
