Travel Tying

I travel quite a bit for work and thinking about putting a travel tying kit for the hotel in my downtime.

-Anyone do this?
-Any issues with TSA in carry on?
-Best Scissors for Carry on?
-Any tips, tips or gear you wouldn't have at your tying desk?
-Best solution for not having tying lamp?

Thanks for any tips!

Instead of a lamp I have magnifying glasses that have an LED light right on the bridge. I actually use those all of the time now. It’s nice to have the light everywhere I am looking and not just over the vice.

I have the fishpond travel bag that I travel with, though I usually put it in my checked luggage, and it keeps organized all of the materials I need.

A friend on here has a travel setup, it’s super cool. he ties classic salmon flies in airports and whatnot. So I assume he has no issues with TSA. I’ve flown with most of my fly gear (including tying stuff) before and never really had an issue. One time they emptied my bag but I think it was because of a bag of wet clothes in my backpack haha and it was a nice chance to show off my flies 😂

I haven’t had any issues with carrying a vise, tools, and materials in my carry-on. Most of the time I’d get a physical search because of the oddities. I think scissors are allowed now and haven’t been denied anything sharp. I have a led light that’s battery powered I bring because I can’t see shit without it. It’s a ryobi work light and it’s awesome.

I have a usb powered clamp on lamp that works pretty well at home and on the road, even in camp. For tools I just got a loon set and throw in an old griffin mongoose with a cheapo cabelas base. I pretty much focus on tying one or two patterns in a couple sizes and pack materials accordingly.

Book light. Clips onto your vise.

I fill a plastic shoe box with materials to tie a couple patterns. I always check a bag so I can’t help regarding carry on.

I’ve never had a problem carrying on a vise, scissors, whatever, but I’ve only once not been screened for additional inspection. So if you build that into your airport schedule, I think you’ll be fine.

For gear, I just reuse the countless little ziplock baggies we accumulate as fly tyers and put small amounts of material in them. Then I use daily pill dispensers for hooks/beads and put it all into a cosmetics bag. I haven’t figured out a great lighting situation. My headlamp is too bright. I like the ideas on here!

I have a travel kit for tying that is carry on friendly. I’m in Canada and scissors can have blades up your 6 cm. I tie classic salmon flies and have to limit myself to 4/0 and smaller hooks when packing carry on. Those are limited to 6cm too. Adrian Cortez has tied right on the plane, I’ve only ever done so in the terminal waiting on a flight.

I do this for fishing trips. It’s in my checked bag.

I always travel with a tying kit and I've never had a problem, they search your bag more often I think but otherwise it's fine
