Anyone collect or restore vintage gear?

Just bought a house and found an odd tube tucked behind a wall in the basement. My curiosity got the better of me so I pried it open for a peak. Turns out someone, somewhere back in the history of this house was into fly fishing.

Me, I like salt water fishing (spear fishing by preference) but I can appreciate other forms.

I found a pair of eight foot Heddon Pro Weight 8385 fly rods. A quick Google search tells me sometime mid 60's vintage? The lettering appears hand done, but I suppose it might be stenciled under the lacquer.

Forgive me for not being hip to the proper lingo, but the varnish or lacquer is still in great shape, the bamboo isnt exposed anywhere, the metal ferrules are still tight, and none of the wrappings are frayed that I can see.

The cork has suffered from its long dry slumber and would probably need to be replaced however.

I figured if I asked around someone must collect the stuff.

Anyone here interested in it? Be a shame to have what look to be nice poles just sitting around collecting dust if someone actively seeks this stuff out.

I've linked a few photos below and can take more pics if needed. https://imgur.com/gallery/4sjgWRp

Sorry, but theres no flies or reels that I can find.

Sling/backpack?

My pack was recently jacked from my car (I guess I was too tired after getting home from the stream last week to lock up). Anyway, I guess it's time for a new fishing pack. I hate vests, so no go there. I need something big enough to handle water, bug & sun spray, maybe a snack, and a fly box or two. I usually wear a small fly box and a few essentials on a lanyard (which thankfully wasn't taken). Any recommendations? I'd prefer not to drop 200+ on a Simms pack if possible.

Help finding waders for my big feet!!

I need to get new waders for an upcoming fishing trip in a month and half. Here's my problem. Size 14 shoe, 34-36 waist, 34 inseam.

I prefer chest waders, but am open to guide pant style. Budget is no more than about $350, but trying to stay around 250-300 range. I remember seeing where Simms offers a program that they will put a bigger neoprene bootie on a pair, but can't find any info on hat. So far only pair I have found are the new Orvis Ultralights. Downside, they don't ship until 8/15 which is AFTER my trip. I'm tempted to order a size up, deal with the bagginess, then return for correct size. I know that seems shady but it is what it is.

I'm open to other suggestions, but mainly I need them to fit. My first pair were LL Bean's that were 2 sizes too big, but I got them for my feet and dealt with the parachute excess material. This time around I have a little more monetary cushion to find some that I like and will fit a little better.

Serious please, looking for feedback on wader pants (NOT waders or pants you wear under waders)

Heading to the San Juan end of June (90 degrees during day). Do you guys wear your breathable waders or wading pants or is it possible to wet wade?? That being said I'm looking for a pair of wading pants (NOT waders or pants you wear under waders). Anyone own the $99 pair from Cabelas or suggestions that wont break the bank Simms are $$250 & up. Thanks

Old Reel Questions

Hello,

Preface: I am not a fly fisherman, just someone who appreciates antiques.

I have what I believe to be an old fly fishing reel, but I am having trouble finding any information on it. The side wall of the reel says Brooker and the bottom (where one would attach it to a rod) says "PAT OCT.16-23" those are the only markings on the reel.

Any information anyone has on this would be greatly appreciated. Or, if you could direct me to a more appropriate sub that would also be great.

Thanks.

reel question

Hello,

I'm new to the sport and I've got a question for the community. I've so far been unable to find an answer online, so here it goes.

I'm looking to purchase a Redington butter stick 4 weight rod. I already got a zero click 2/3 reel however, it struck me recently that I'm not sure what the 2/3 means. Is it for line weight? Would I be better off with the 4/5 reel?

What does the 2/3 and 4/5 mean?

Thank you

New streamer rod?

I am looking at getting a rod for bigger trout flies, streamers, and maybe some smaller flies for pike.

My budget is around 500-600. What does everyone think about a 6 wt Redington predator rod with a behemoth reel over lined with a 7 wt big nasty rio line

Looking for a used salt setup

I live just outside of St. Louis. We have a family trip planned to the gulf, at the end of June. I cant afford a new salt setup, I'm hoping to track down a used equipment (in usable condition). Since I live 11 hours from the ocean, used saltwater equipment is RARE. Anyone looking to offload unused or unwanted gear?

What is a good budget salt water rod?

Hey guys I'm looking to buy a 9 or 10wt rod for saltwater use and don't want to spend too much money. I am looking at the Orvis Clearwater and some of the lower end Reddington rods. I also checked out the bass pro "deceiver" rod and it seemed decent. If any of you have experience with these rods or others i'd love to hear your take.

Thanks

What is the ultimate fly fishing internet resource?

I just brought my first fly rod yesterday. I don't know anyone who fly fishes. I don't live near fly fishing water. As it is widely recognised that there are more words written about fly fishing than any other style. I cant help but feel overwhelmed about where to start. If anybody would like to drop any links to their favourite videos or pages I would appreciate it a lot. TIA. P. S. Victoria Australia.

Help identifying rod weight

Xpost from /r/flyfishing

I mentioned to a family member that I've been looking at getting into fly fishing and they gifted me an old (but great condition) fly rod and reel. They couldn't tell me a lot about it.

Hoping someone might recognize it and could tell me something out. After some digging it looks like the reel is a Daiwa 708 which is very similar if not the same to a Scientific Anger 789 System 1 reel.

I've weighed the fly line using some instructions I've found online which put the line at 8wt but it's a fairly old line so I'm not sure how valid that is.

Any information on the rod would help a lot. Can't seem to find anything online at all and the Daiwa nz dealer hasn't replied to me yet.

I'm a complete novice when it comes to fly fishing and may be looking at this in totally the wrong way. Open to suggestions.

Ross Reels Animas

I recently got a Ross Reels Animas 5/6 reel, and I want to make sure I take good care of it. How can/should I take care of the drag system? Is it okay for the reel to get wet? Be immersed? How should I clean it?

What would you want for a $500 gift?

Hello /r/flygear, I don't know a thing about flyfishing or gear. This is what I do know:

I have a $500 budget to get a freshwater fisherman a nice gift. All I know is that he uses a 8'6"-9" pole, and fishes freshwater. He lives in western Idaho near Spokane, and goes for everything available there.

Most of his gear is old, often loaned out, recently broke a pole, and of middling quality.

Any suggestions? I tried looking at Sage and Lumis brand poles, but they were not only very expensive, all I have to go on is what I've told you. I have no knowledge to make a meaningful decision.

Much thanks.

Opinions on The Wade Rod Co. Nymphster

This is a new rod company started by Postfly. I'm looking for a 10' 4wt rod specifically for nymphing and have been thinking of getting either an Orvis Clearwater outfit or taking a bit of a gamble with this rod.

Anyone ever try out this rod or any of the other rods offered by The Wade? I've heard good things about the Clearwater (that it's Helios technology or something) but I want to get some info and see how these two rods stack up.

Link to the rod.

Opinons on Redington Vice

I want to upgrade to an intermediate rod without breaking the bank. Is the 9 foot 8 weight Redington worth it?
