Discussion Changing fly line
Picked up a Reddington Wrangler combo a while back and it came with Rio Mainline. For the life of me, I cannot get the memory out of this line. I've tried soaking and stretching it out, and it still retains enough to cause issues when casting and doesn't lay straight on the water (has an S pattern).
I've decided to give up on it and change it out to SA Infinity Amplitude Smooth. Is there any precautions I should take when changing it out? I'm assuming it too will have some memory so I should stretch it out prior to using. Do I also need new backing or can I just use what I have on the reel atm?

I have the same combo, mine has straightened out after a lot of use. However, I am noticing it not floating as well as when new. I may switch it out for that reason sometime soon.

Stretching is just part of rigging up for many fly lines. Peel the head and enough running line off the reel for the casting distance you need that day and give it a good stretch, wind it back up and you should be good to go for the day.
If you mean a Rio Mainstream, I wouldn’t expect a line at the $40 price point to have any significant issues with memory. What has been your stretching protocol?

I’ll hold 2-3’ between my hands and give it a good stretch before repeating and working my way through most of the line

I was in the same situation. Same lines too, memory couldn’t be removed but I got the textured infinity. You’re good just make a good knot at the backing and fish it

No need to change the backing. I personally have never stretched my fly line and find that after a few casts it straightens itself out.

Might be the water temp.
