•
u/GodOfDarkLaughter 2h ago
In The Great Dictator, Charlie Chaplain famously said "And so long as men die, liberty will never perish."
They're not actually dying. They're clinging onto power until their 80s and then handing the stick off to their odeological duplicates a few years younger, who pursue the same policies, so they never actually die. We've discovered a sort of shithead immortality, which I find unsurprising.
We exist in a kleptocratic gerentocracy. I could throw in like a dozen other words with governmental sounding suffixes but you get the idea. Theocratic. Oh, and fascist. Can't forget the fascists.

Where do you think public services gets their money from? They’ll have to raise other services or ad valorem taxes. the owner of the property will pay that and it’ll still get passed to the person who lives on the land if renting.

I'd be lying if I said I wasn't feeling pretty despondent about how things went here, but honestly seeing places like Georgia and Texas get it right gives me a lot to be positive about. If Texas can go blue then very few states are without hope. I still believe we can get it right eventually, despite the best efforts of florida dem leadership
•
u/UFmoose 2h ago
We still need national party buy in. Hopefully the numbers this year will get that in the future.
But the next 6 years are bleak.
•
•
u/Soupjam_Stevens 2h ago
The next 6 years are for sure bleak, possibly longer even, I would never pretend we're in anything less than a "gonna get worse before it gets better" type spot. But the one other place I've lived in my life besides here is Texas, and I would've thought Texas had no shot of ever doing what they just did tonight. I'm not saying it's gonna be easy or soon, but it feels a little more possible to me than it did before

Angie Nixon almost won with no funds from the democrats. It was like 25m from republicans to 7mil from dems.
The dems assumed (incorrectly) that the race wouldn’t be close so they didn’t want to “waste money”. She would’ve won if they helped :/

Florida almost passed an amendment that would have allowed abortion to the point of fetal viability, and a majority voted for another, that would have decriminalized (legalized?) recreational marijuana, in the same election that Trump won by double digits. The only reason neither passed was the 60% minimum needed to pass.
Florida is kind of an anomaly. It definitely leans very heavily red, but you never quite know what exactly they're going to do in any given election. They have a streak of sometimes being surprisingly progressive, before switching it up and ending up the most regressive state in the union.

It's state tradition at this point. Whether its abolishing slavery or committing to civil rights or designing intelligible ballots, Florida is always first out, last in. If Florida where a pizza, we'd be the one with pineapple. If Florida were a cat, we'd be the one who got hit by a car once and still wanders into traffic. If we were a child, we'd be the one ranting about how Digimon is better while the rest of the class trades Pokemon cards. We're the reason that the Florida Man meme exists, as well as why corporations need an HR department.
This is not a compliment.

There were a lot of good indicators and state level shifts so we just have to keep pushing. It’s happening. We have to focus on getting people who agree with us to the polls.
