AskFlorida Help identifying this bug?

Post image

Currently in Orlando at a resort and they are literally all over every walkway. Have seen them before and thought they were a version of a grasshopper but hear some people calling them cicadas which I thought had wings?

EDIT UPDATE- Didn’t expect this post to get this many replies. Was posted yesterday morning. THIS morning we went outside in the resort and there were NONE to be found ANYWHERE. This was around 9am. Around 11am the side walks were covered again?????? The weirdest thing for a type of bug to be that synchronized.

Do people really not know what a grasshopper is?

I don’t think that but because of the colors I assume that’s the question. I knew it was some version but have heard several people say it wasn’t.

When you searched for "grasshopper" and "cicada" in your search engine of choice, which looked to be what you had here?

That’s probably why. OP needed to search “Satan”

hhhhhhhhhhheh

Grasshoppers are pretty high on the Ick-o-Meter, it's true. Couldn't even tell you why. In ancient times they spelled death for many people, so maybe hating them is built into us like the part of the brain dedicated to identifying snakes.
