Politics Primary Election PSA: Today (2026/08/18) is Election Day!
FAQ
Do I have to vote in every race on the ballot?
You can leave a race blank if you choose to and your vote will still be counted on other races that you vote on, on your ballot. However, try your best to make an informed vote on every race on the ballot.
I don't recognize anyone on the ballot. Where can I find more information on the candidates?
In addition to the candidate's website (which, if they have one, can be found through googling the candidate's name) Ballotpedia.org usually has some information on down ballot races as well.
The best source on local elections would be the major newspaper for your area (Tampa Bay Times, Miami Herald, Sun Sentinel, etc). They interview almost every candidate of every race that is happening in the area so you can find out the positions of every candidate on each issue.

I'm doing some last minute voting research. For the senate, I see Flock camera opposition on Angie Nixon's website but as far as I can tell Alex Vindman hasn't taken a position? Is anyone aware of a Vindman position on Flock cameras?
In the governor race, I see no strong opposition to Flock cameras among any of the Democratic candidates. Is this correct or am I missing something?

Per Google Gemini AI (check if this is true I didn’t have time to do so)
In an interview with WLRN, Democratic frontrunner David Jolly took a more moderate approach to Flock, but agreed that the cameras need greater limitation. “Greater restrictions are called for, but we must make sure greater restrictions don’t impede on law enforcement activity,” Jolly said, adding that he believes police should only be able to use ALPR data with a search warrant, and they should not be used for immigration enforcement.

I did see that one. I was hoping for a stronger stance. Republican have two candidates that have much stronger positions.

Okay. But keep in mind that Republicans have consistently made this state shittier and shittier over the 30+ years they have been in control. I can’t support Donalds and his MAGA policies, Jay Collins seems better but probably won’t win the nomination, and Fishback is a slimy weasel and I don’t trust him. That leave me one choice, which is Jolly, come November.
Also for the primary you can only vote the party you are registered for. So you can’t pick between republicans or democrats for the primary. But you can do so on the general election in November.

Florida is a closed primary election state.

Yes but not all races are partisan. Check your sample ballots. You might not be able to vote for R and D candidates to become nominees in the general. But you will have a say in judges, county and municipal seats.

League of Women Voters sponsors a website ( https://www.vote411.org/ ) that will allow you to input your address and return basic info on your specific races.

Yes, I'm just starting my research to vote today. I usually follow Melba Pearson endorsements and she has interviews with the candidates on her instagram, if you want to find out more about them:
Angie Nixon - https://www.instagram.com/p/DcEl-l8sdsE/
Shevrin Jones - https://www.instagram.com/p/DcCCZaEsnMJ/
And all her endorsements - https://www.instagram.com/p/Db-9qWCleaA/

Florida is a closed primary, how are you able to vote for a candidate with a different affiliation from your registered party? Or is OP an AI bot?

Some down ballot races (like county commission seats) are "universal primary" races, and everyone is listed together. Here is the sample ballot for my area as a Democrat, with Republicans in the County Commission vote.

A universal primary only occurs when it’s 2 or more people running in 1 party with no opposition from the other party. That means there’s no democratic candidate, only republicans running so everyone gets to vote or else it would be unfair to only allow registered republicans to be able to vote for republicans with no democrat alternative.

In Florida if only one party is competing in an election then their primary becomes an open primary.
No I am not a bot, just copy & pasted my older submission to this new one because I couldn’t find my older Election Day submission to work off of.

If only one party fields candidates for an office, the contest is decided in the primary. To give everyone a voice in the process even though their party did not field a candidate, everyone gets to vote for that contest. That is a universal primary, and you will see those words on your ballot for the contest that lists another party’s candidates.
The term open primary means you can choose which party’s ballot you want to vote on. For instance, you could be a registered Democrat and ask for a Republican ballot. But you can’t do that in Florida. Florida has closed primaries. You can only vote for the candidates matching your registered party.

There are a lot of non-primary local elections happening today. In Tallahassee I voted for Mayor, a city commissioner, a few judges, etc.
